He's been given dispensation by the OHL to go to the AHL if/when he does not make the Kraken roster this year. Probably the best thing for his development than either having to go to the OHL again or being stuck on the Kraken bench.
Why? And if they allow 1 player that option they should have offer it to all players.

I think due to the league being shut down during covid which messed with his eligibility when he normally would have had it. I don't think it would have been a good look for the OHL to force him to stay, especially with a lot of it being due to covid.

Is that even allowed in the CBA, or the NHL-CHL agreement. That would open Pandora’s box.
Do you have a link? As

I'm sure if there are others who aren't eligible due to covid killing that season they may too.

Still think it opens Pandora’s box, but could possibly happen it looks like.

Daly did email back Tuesday, when told of Francis’s comments, to say no “official ruling” would be made unless needed if Wright doesn’t stick with the team. He added it would be a joint decision between the NHL and major junior officials and that “as a general matter, we don’t favor granting exemptions or waivers, but the facts in this case are particularly unique.”

Possibly. Looking at it further, it doesn't sound like the WHL will grant Matthew Savoie an exemption. I think his situation is slightly similar but not quite.

Savoie didn't have ES, he was denied. They look holed their way into him playing after Xmas once he turned 16 by carrying a small roster and using him as a "call up".

Even if there was no covid shutdown Savoie would only have 3 years whl and be under 20. Wright would have hypothetically had 4 already without a shutdown

Completely different circumstances.

One player needed one game to fulfill his CHL obligations, the other needs one more season.

Does a better more polished Mikael Backlund sound like a good player comp?
He's not nearly as good of a skater or two way player. Backlund was an excellent #2 center in his prime, if Wright turns out like him that's a great outcome.

No.

Wright has a long way to go to become an elite defensive forward. Really for any prospect we should be cautious about projecting elite defense, it's harder to project.

What is easier to project is that Wright will be able to contribute a lot on the PP. His basic shooting and passing skills really shine in open space when he doesn't have anyone on him.

Meanwhile Backlund is an elite 5v5 guy who doesn't contribute on the PP.

So he didn't make the team? Hopefully he puts the work in in CV. He's fallen behind several of his draft peers at this point.

Reminder he did lose a season worth of OHL games due the virus mess but got credited for it.

Yea he didn't make it which is why the team pushed hard for that exemption.

Admittedly early, I know, but he's giving me Lafreniere vibes. It'll be interesting to watch his progress in the AHL this year and if I'm eating crow by the end.
