He is definitely on the rise in this years draft but is he a center (at the next level) taking only 32 draws this year, with a good rate mind you.

Unless he plays C at WJC or the Giants move him to the middle, he'll be drafted as a winger. It's not very common in North America for a player to shift to C after that, but not unprecedented. PLD and Cutter Gauthier are a couple exceptions that come to mind.

It only takes one team to believe he’ll be a centre and suddenly he’s drafted mid-first round. Could definitely see that happening. Of course ending up as a winger is more likely if he doesn’t play centre his entire draft year.

There will be wingers drafted top 15 and if Honzek continues this pace, he should be one of them.

Adam Lowry is a good example also. If Honzek is really good defensive player it is quite likely coaching tries to play him as a center. Gauthier was a center when he was younger so he is so so example.

I've seen some latest draft rankings and he is not in the first round. No way this happens with his 1.41 ppg production in the whl.

Gauthier didn’t shift to center. He’s been a center for years. He played a little wing his draft year on a team with like 9 natural centers.

Samuel Honzek is an interesting player overall. He’s listed as a center but I haven’t see him play center in the WHL or WJC and I think he’s definitely a winger at the higher levels. Honzek played well in the Slovakian league last year and has been putting up great numbers in the WHL this year. He has great vision and play making ability. He plays a very smart game in the offensive zone and anticipates play well. He can definitely make some solid tape-to-tape passes and he’s a player who wants the puck all the time. He has a decent amount of skill to his game and I think he will be able to improve his shot over time.

His skating is pretty average I think. Whenever he gets his feet moving he can get to a decent top speed but skating probably isn’t a strength of his compared to others in his draft class. He does have some decent compete in his game but it’s a bit inconsistent. I’d like to see him be a bit more of a two-way player to be more effective. He shows flashes of an ability to use good stick-work and hound players for the puck but is a bit inconsistent with his overall motor.

He struggled a bit in his 2 WJC games because of his slight frame and difficulty handling increased pace of play. In the defensive zone he seemed pretty lost and was pretty much a non-factor in those games. However, it is still a great accomplishment to make a team in your draft year. In his games in the WHL, he is a bit better but is definitely inconsistent with his willingness to commit to defensive play. It was shocking to see him listed at 6’4” because he is so slight and doesn’t utilize his frame to it’s maximum potential. He can be physical at times but it’s not really an element to his game yet.

I think Honzek projects as a middle-six winger in the NHL but will need to increase his strength and add weight to his frame. He has the ability to be a two-way playmaking winger but needs to commit more to defensive play. I really like his playmaking ability a lot and it’s a skill he can definitely build off of along with the potential of his overall frame. I see him as a late 1st rounder, but if a team thinks he can play center, he might go in the top 20.

Man he looks good today. After getting only short shifts on satuday he looks back to his pre injury self. Here’s his first goal of the game and this Twitter user also has the second and other clips of Honzek’s game so far.

He was dangerous the whole game, had a great chance SH, and hit the post on another rush. So close to a hat trick.

Very direct player. He has a nose for the net, and rarely drives the puck behind the net.
