I understand and hear the points you are making. Selfishly, I think Steel would benefit more from playing in the AHL than the CHL (if he does not make the NHL). Again, it's not that there is "nothing left to learn" in the CHL, it's just a question of whether he could learn more from playing in the AHL at this point.
Yeah, I can understand that point. Its up for debate. I'm still not sure Alex Nylander being in the AHL next year was the best move for him. I also don't think it worked out that well with Sonny Milano. Granted, it has looked good with Christian Fischer. I just don't think its absolute like some phrase it, and considering how successful the CHL is at producing a vast portion of the NHL's talent, I'd say its better not to mess around with what is already a fairly successful system, for a couple cases a year.

So much hype for a guy that will likely top out as a 3rd liner but he will definitely dominate the AHL.

Sam has the potential and type of play that can make him a #1 center in this league and on the same hand he can end up as a minor leaguer as well. He is a great prospect but has some serious question marks regarding how he will handle the more physical competition. If he takes the next step my Ducks will be happy. Only good players make tough plays look easy and a lot of his plays look easy.

I don't know what league he should play next season. A lot will be determined by his summer work. Obviously he has to become stronger and more powerful. Rounding out his game sounds in juniors sounds some kind of strange to me. His game is already mature.

How about players like Steel go and play in European pro league next season? The problem there seemed to be the Ducks training camp and European league starting times however. But on paper I think that would be at least an explorable thing.

On the other hand, if Marner had something to gain in an extra year in the OHL, I`m sure Steel can improve in the WHL as well.

I'm not very good with the CHL/NHL agreement but someone said earlier that if he doesn't make the ducks Regina will have the chance to get him before he goes off to Europe.

Meh. You knew so little about him that you compared him to Etem.

There is more I could say on the matter, but with an evaluation like that do I need to? No. No, I don't.

You will see CHL players occasionally play in the AHL playoffs if their junior teams have been eliminated, maybe that's where some confusion is arising from. Jordan Eberle did this during his stint with Regina because the team was bad and didn't quality for the playoffs. He played 20 AHL games while still being in junior.

This situation is unlikely to happen for Steel as Regina is a very good team.

Steel has a hattrick tonight with 15 minutes left in the third. That production is carrying over in a big way in the postseason so far.

It's not just his production. He completely controls the game when he's on the ice.

His first two goals were absolute snipes. Skated into a high danger area and picked corners. Can't remember how he got the puck on the first one, but the second was a great takeaway at center, then skated it into the slot and ripped it top corner.

Third goal was a combination of a terrible play by the Hitmen player, and great anticipation by Steel to intercept a pass on the PK and go for a breakaway. What was really impressive about that was that the Pats had been hemmed into their own zone for about a minute before he exploded for a breakaway. Protected the puck beautifully on a diving pokecheck and then another snipe.

The guy wins faceoffs, backchecks, and is just all-around dominant. He is really starting to look NHL ready.

I like what you said on the Anaheim board:

Running out of superlatives now.

It's all been said. We're just repeating ourselves. The kid has had a terrific season.

I'm a bit surprised that so many people throughout the boards think that Steel is a virtual lock to return to juniors next year. I think the Ducks are going to give him a serious, serious look next year given the weird circumstances they're looking at in the immediate future.

I think it's a certainty that the Ducks move a defensemen in the offseason or some time next season (hopefully Vatanen, maybe Fowler depending on where contract discussions go) in return for a forward and they are going to want to have as clear of an understanding possible at what they already have in their system.

Couple that with the expansion draft where they may lose Vermette and Nate Thompson's expiring deal, and it's pretty clear to see Steel's potential path to the Ducks sooner than some might think.

It depends how his training camp goes (he didn't exactly have a great one this year) and also how much growth we get from guys like Ritchie and Kase. Vermette's likely out the door (which would leave a hole for Steel to fill in at 3C, provided he grabs a spot out of training camp) but we'll probably be getting another forward, possibly another center, from whichever defenseman we trade.

We also tend to be very conservative with rushing prospects to the NHL, and combine that with our likely lack of an opening for Steel to jump in, he'll have to really impress in training camp to grab a permanent roster spot, though he might get the 9 game look anyways depending on how he does.

I'm fairly certain Steel will get 9 games, but then it comes down to whether he looks physically ready yet. He has a ton of potential, there's no need to rush him.

Like I said on the ducks board, if he were drafted top 5 instead of 30th I don't think the idea of him playing in the NHL next year would seem so crazy. It's possible the scouts were wrong about him, or he just took a massive leap in his development (or perhaps alot of things just went wrong in his draft year)

I think he's going to get a serious look for sure

And like I said:

If he was picked 5th, it would have been because he had an even better draft year. And even then, I suspect there would still be apprehension. See: Bobby Ryan. Hampus Lindholm.

This board is actually pretty consistent, with a few exceptions, about prospects. Give them time, let them develop, and see how they look. 5th overall, or 30th overall. Let the kid show his stuff before we pencil him in.

Not many comments for him despite being in the WHL finals. Interesting.

Honestly I love this player and he's gonna be a beauty, but Seattle kept him in check during the finals. Strangely enough I didn't notice him too much. Sure he put up 6 points in these 6 games, but I just really didn't notice him alot.

I am very curious how he will be next year when he loses a lot of his teammates. IMO he wont be near the PPG he put up this season. He played with a lot of extremely good and high point getters which allowed him to hit the point total he got

He still has some work to do before he makes it to the NHL. It will be perfect next year for him being back in the WHL without a lot of guys that were on this Regina team.
