I think hell get a long look at camp(and possibly 9 games) pending on our moves in the off season and expansion draft.

If we lose vermette via ED I could see us using Rakell as our 3c and putting steel on the wing(not sure if he has any exp wing or which side hed be better on)

Maybe something like
Ritchie Getzlaf eaves(or kase or a diff FA winger)
Cogliano Kesler Silfverberg
Steel Rakell Perry

at least as a trial I wouldn't mind seeing that line combo, that being said I could see a few other guys getting looks like max jones or kossila

I could definitely see Ritchie getting an extended look there next year. Not everyone who plays on the top line has to be elite -- look at what Pittsburgh has in Guentzel and Sheary. Ritchie plays a complimentary role well, possesses a very solid shot that Getzlaf can pass to, and he's a bull who can play the cycle game well, as well as being an imposing presence physically and on the forecheck. I think he'd be a great fit on that line, especially if he continues to trend upwards in his development.

Great season for Steel, nice to see he got a shout out during the Oilers/Kings game too.

Regina has a stacked Powerplay, but Steel's is playing with Nick Henry who is pretty good but still a 17 year old rookie, and Dawson Leedahl, and overage player whose previous high was 33 points in a season. He is driving the offense on that line in a big way.
 
Regina is hosting the Memorial Cup next year so I'd be surprised if he sticks with the Ducks. Unless of course he gives them little choice but to keep him up with a great training camp.

He does have a really good shot, but he doesn't use it. Almost all of his goals are tips and rebounds which isn't a bad thing but he doesn't create anything other than that right now. He does hit very well....when he can get there. He is never engaged unless he is angry and when he is angry he takes bad penalties. Hopefully he continues to work on his condition and fitness level and works on creating for himself so he can use that awesome shot.
 
Ducks will have an interesting decision next season. Sam is not old enough to play in the AHL, do they return him or develop him at the NHL level if he is ready? Can't see him needing more seasoning at the WHL level.

Best option is to mature in the Swedish/Finnish league, playing against men. It is a good test for him to experience real hockey against people who are physically stronger.

Regina has first refusal, if he doesn't make Anaheim, they have to offer him back to Regina first, before exploring other options. No team in the CHL would agree to let a North American raised played go off to Europe, let alone one that is hosting the Memorial Cup next year. In general, if you aren't good enough to crack an NHL line-up at 19, there is still stuff to learn and refine at the CHL level. Could the AHL or Europe be more beneficial? Maybe, but it is far from a sure thing.

Yeah but to be fair Leedahl played on Everett and they only score like 200 goals a season.

I didn't know the NHL/CHL agreement reached that far - is there any source for that or any precedent? Not that it'll matter there, because that route seems entirely unlikely for Steel. But it also seems unlikely that CHL teams can stop players from going pro in Europe.

Section 8.7 of the CBA

8.7 Age 18 and 19 Players.
(a) During the first two seasons next succeeding the draft of an age 18 Player, the
Club he signs an SPC with must first offer him to the club from which he was claimed before it may Loan him.

(b) During the first season next succeeding the draft of an age 19 Player or a Player
who reaches his 19th birthday between September 16 and December 31, inclusive, of the year of the Entry Draft, the Club he signs an SPC with must first offer him to the club from which he was claimed before it may Loan him.

(c) During the seasons set forth in (a) and (b) above, the age 18 and age 19 Player,
respectively, may be Loaned to the minor league team affiliate of his Club when his Junior team is no longer in competition and provided he has been listed on the Club's minor league eligibility list.

Now, this doesn't mean that this agreement couldn't be challenged in court, because there is a major difference between what you can earn in Europe, and a CHL stipend and educational package. But, as it currently works, if he isn't with the Ducks next year, Regina gets first refusal, which they would never pass on for a bunch of reason (it would set a bad precedent league wide pissing off all fellow owners, and two, they need him).

Might be partially true, but they do care about the development of their prospects and also burning a year off his ELC.

I look at the Leafs sending Adam Brooks back to junior this year when they could have assigned him to the AHL, they probably don't do that if he's not a big part of a team that has a chance to play in the Memorial Cup. It might not be real high on their priority list, but there is some value in having a prospect go through that situation.

I personally hope they opt to burn a year off to send him to the 'A'. He looks like he's ready to take the next step.

Steel cannot play in the AHL next year even if the Ducks wanted him to. Would violate the agreement with the CHL junior leagues.

They aren't. It's NHL or CHL. You may just be thinking of the cases of late birthdays like Nick Ritchie who played in the AHL in his d+2, or of the European/NHL transfer agreement that allowed for it with Lindholm. There are weird loopholes around "loan agreements" (see A. Nylander and Honka) but those don't apply in Steel's case.

If that's the case, I hope that he's capable of playing in the NHL next season, because I don't believe for a moment that another year in the W is doing him any good.
 
Obviously Sam has outgrown the CHL. He needs to mature by playing aginst real men instead of the CHL boys. Another CHL year will be a wasted year.
