It's bananas how good Regina is this year. 50 wins in 70 games. Imagine if Tyson Jost somehow joins them next season

Really excited for him. I don't see these point totals translating to the NHL as easily as someone like Marner has; his offensive skillset doesn't scream "FUTURE SUPERSTAR". But he's a well-rounded player with hockey IQ to spare. There's always room for players like that on an NHL team.

Sucks he's not AHL eligible next year as that would be the best option for him if he doesn't earn himself a roster spot, but we'll have to see what happens in training camp in 6 months.

I guess you could call him a draft Steel.

Could you, though? :sarcasm:

Calling it now, Steel of the draft.
Doing pretty good back in junior, maybe a steal of the draft:sarcasm:
Sam Steel

More like Sam Steal
This draft pick is a Steel.
What a steel

It's entirely understandable, though. I'm certainly happier with him earning those puns than seeing it happen after selecting this guy.

Legit question though, are Steel's stats so incredible because Regina's team is so incredible, or is Steel that good?

He's the driving force behind the offense when he's on the ice.

I'm sure there is a combination of both there, but he isn't simply benefiting from a good situation. He's making things happen.

He's earned his numbers, he isn't a passenger. Playing on a stacked team helps, but him and Brooks are clearly the drivers of the offence and they are usually on seperate lines.

I wasn't really expecting much, maybe a draft season numbers +10 more. The guy seems unreal every time I watch - which I don't do often due to time difference. Let's hope his production translates to NHL.

I watch the highlights after every game( if they are available) and a lot of games he looks like he coulda had 2 or 3 more points... he looks like a very lethal player, kinda got back to where people originally thought hed be.

Now I don't expect him to be an elite center, but if he becomes a low tier 1c or great 2c ill be ecstatic about the pick, I'm actually excited to go to the ducks camp this year just to see how he looks(last years camp I wasn't overly impressed by him, but he was young and prob a bit over whelmed), hope he does enough to at least get a 9 game look.

Only time can tell what he will be in the NHL or if he will ever be there. Too much can happen. I think he has all ingredients to be a #1 center in the NHL, especially his hockey IQ. If he turns out that way? I don't know. If he can't handle the physicallity of the NHL he even may end up as a AHLer. We will see, so far, the future looks bright.

I think he will get the 9 games next season and go back to junior then. The Ducks take it slow and Sam is a player I'd like to see rounded out before he enters pro. He is now listed at 6.00 180 and while that looks ok I still have the feeling he can improve heavily by adding 10 more pounds and getting stronger.

This has got to be the most grounded down to earth thread I've ever seen on this website. All those who post here deserve a pat on the back

The league has changed. Small players can excel easily as there is very little hitting in open ice now. West east players like Panarin would have multiple concussions 10 yrs ago. Steel looks legit to me, just don't like his situation on Anaheims roster.

Why not? Yeah, there's Getzlaf/Kesler there, but the Ducks have been using a 3rd scoring line with either Rakell shifted to center and/or Perry on the wing. When the expansion setup on defense is sorted out, there's probably a decent chance Vermette is the best option for Vegas, as well. If he can show he belongs in camp, I think there's a pretty good situation waiting for him.

Watching him tonight against Brandon. Very impressed with what I have seen. Anaheim certainly have a knack of finding these late 1st rd gems.

The thing is IF Chicago had not traded their first for tge "all in" TDL add of Andrew Ladd rental last season which Failed ,then Maybe they would have drafted Steel ahead of pick #30 with their in traded pick ..So can you imagine tge Hawks with both Steel and DeBrincat probably playing on their 3rd line together ?Scary.

I'd venture that logic could be applied to any team that dealt a 1st rounder, not just the Hawks.

The thing is (...)

I don't really think it's the thing. It's not like there's any consensus pick at #30. There are probably 20-ish guys (if not more) that could have been on Chicagos radar for that pick. It's a pretty huge long shot Steel would have been one of their primary targets. Either way, both Steel and DeBrincat have some serious way to go, still. Looking excellent, though.

Whether it is luck or coincidence. The 30th pick yields good and useful players lately.

2010 - Nelson
2011 - Rakell
2012 - Pearson
2013 - Hartman
2014 - Quenneville
2015 - Merkley
2016 - Steel
