Five months of watching him and I'm rarely eager to plug someone into the lineup before they are ready... but it seems to me like Savoie is ready. And not ready to sit around in the press box, or get manipulated into conditioning assignments, but actually taking ice time and making something of himself.
Agreed,

Signed a fellow 30+ game watcher of Winnipeg.

I've watched more Savoie, Benson, McClennon than Erie-era McDavid.

Seems to be echoed by the journalists that watch his games. I’ll be honest I’d like to see them (the Sabres) go with a few more older players who are likely much more consistent and reliable in the NHL then have another season of coaching through a line of kids while the team tries to make the playoffs.

Yeah and swapping out a 41 year old (Anderson) for a 19 year old while possibly not resigning some other vets will get us younger. I think a vet D man would help and you can always point to the Devils if you're worried a young team couldn't have success. Next year we could potentially have 4 or 5 guys ready to make the jump.

I would too.

I agree here.

There is something to be said about having vets to mentor and insulate young players that are still physically maturing.

I think it is a whole lot easier for the kids coming in if they are playing with vets that protect them a bit and show them the ropes vs having multiple undersized prospects playing together and being targeted by other teams as a strategy to rough them up for a serious game advantage, which we had last season.

I am not against having multiple rookies in the lineup on a young team, but how they are implemented and supported by linemates will affect their development, imo.

Do people feel he is NHL ready ? Just having an incredible playoff run and season .

I would be down to do the Shane Wright approach, I don’t know if he needs to go back to junior and just light it up for another year

I wanna give him a shot at a top 6 role next season and I feel he is almost NHL ready
Which 2 of our top 7 do you see him supplanting?

It's likely more that he works into the mid-6 in terms of line numbering and "4th line" in terms of TOI as he seems like he could give them most of what they got out of Olofsson's minutes with a different combination of skills.
Would a combination of JJ, Mitts and Savoie be a black hole?

I don't feel comfortable with that as a line as of today, no. I think Savoie could give them better minutes than they got out of Vic (not hard, I know) but until proven otherwise, I have reservations about JJP's game at this time.

Greenway and Mitts may be good linemates for him to start with.

Edit:
I see it was mentioned above!

That still leaves growth from Peterka-Quinn as the path out of them and Cozens getting their teeth kicked in.
It was frustrating watching Cozens get dragged down but I would assume some growth from those 2. They'll still need to improve so who better to continue to pivot those guys. I guess we can never tell who will click with whom.

I was disappointed with Cozens too.

I know it's not going to be popular, but I wonder at what Savoie does if he gets Krebs' role to break in.

I know it’s getting a little off topic but I think you have to break up Quinn and Peterka. I don’t love both of them going through the same developmental pains on the same line. Because when they both slump, that line is going to fail.

I’m not sure where to put Savoie. Perhaps a Savoie - cozens - greenway line. Quinn and mitts seems like a good pairing too, so maybe Quinn - Mitts - okposo.

Leaving us with Girgs - krebs - Peterka. I think Peterka could benefit from playing that fundamentals game Girgs plays and krebs played last year.

Skinner - Thompson - Tuch
Savoie - Cozens - Greenway
Quinn - Mitts - Okposo
Girgs - Krebs - Peterka

Can Savoie carry the trigger man role on a line? The highlights @Chainshot has been posting seem to show he can finish.

With Mitts as a playmaker (who ought to shoot more), and Greenway as the power forward, someone has to be able to work himself open and test the goalies from range.

I was looking at it as

Skinner-Tage-Tuch
Quinn-Cozens-Greenway
JJ-Mitts-Savoie
Girgs-Krebs-Okposo/Rousek
Jost

Barring any trades/signings/retirements.

Not to make this about jj but he’s the guy for me that’s blocking everyone else. I feel like there’s 3 spots in the top 9 that are a suitable for upgrades. 1 for jt compher, 1 for peterka, and I’d much prefer that last spot reserved for another veteran add. If sav is the guy that ends up there when everyone’s healthy I’ll be disappointed.

The banger 4th line C? I see where you're going there but I think they set him up with some skill.

I'm not ruling out Mitts between Skinner and Tuch. Also not popular but it brings a lot of dangerous depth. Maybe something like

Skinner Mitts Tuch
Greenway Thompson JJP
Quinn Cozens Savoie
Girgs Krebs Okie(?)

Teams followed Thompson even when he wasn't with Skinner and Tuch. It opened things up for that first line. The big boys could make some room for JJ on the 2nd but I'm worried Greeny is the only one that knows his way around his own zone. The 3rd line is just sneaky good and could eat every night. Furthermore, Savoie gets real, skilled NHlers to play with.

Better come up with nautical nickname for tage carrying those 2 boat anchors around with him.
