They could have traded him as a rental this deadline. Now they have to wait 3 more years for a guy who's role will likely decrease over that time and ultimately return less than he maybe could have this year. Maybe Yzerman can work out a trade before that but I doubt anybody is dying to acquire Fabbri at 4M per.

That term really didn’t seem like an obstacle when Yzerman traded Mantha within the first year of the extension.

I’m not a massive fan of Fabbri’s play this year either. My comments about Berggren not having a place in the lineup is not based on what I’d do, but based on what we have evidence of the coaching staff choosing to do. Fabbri isn’t leaving the top 6. That Guelph line isn’t changing anytime soon. It also seems impossible for Erne to be held responsible for his poor play this year.

Sure but I'd say Mantha is better than Fabbri by a decent margin and that big, skilled, power F type teams often desire. He was always going to have some value, extension or not.

You're probably right as far as the coaching staff but they didn't hesitate to give Raymond a top spot and keep him there despite some recent growing pains. I don't think Blashill's job security is all that high where he can just be satisfied with the status quo. If Berggren shows he's ready and able for a top 6 role and will make the team better then Blash has all the incentive to deploy him as such.

How has Berggren been? Detroit fans will he be a full time NHLer next season or the season after.

Hes 2nd in points and first in goals on Grand Rapids, most people think he'll make the team next year. Hes been playing less and less on the perimeter which has been the knock on him and hes definitely developed more as a shooter as the year has went on. I would be surprised if he didnt make the team next year unless he has a bad training camp/preseason. He should get every opportunity to play in the NHL next year

Berggren will probably get a 9 game audition to end the season this year where I think he will prove himself capable of playing in the NHL.

Berggren's contract can't be slid any further so nine games doesn't really matter for him. Hes definitely due a cup of coffee at some point but thus far I'd say he's had a lot of success in the AHL and I'm okay with leaving him down there.

After the TDL there might be an opening or two in Detroit's top 9. There's always an opening when they go to Canada. He deserves a shot.

Yzerman said that he should focus on the AHL. Highly doubt he gets some NHL games this year.

I thought the same earlier in the year, but now I think he'll get a few games. He's really earned it, and I think it's important for him to get a bite of that carrot on the stick. Let's put a little extra $ in his pocket too.

I don't see why.

Mostly based on what they did and how they played last year in the SHL. Raymond has done an excellent job in the NHL, no doubt. I just don't think the result would be that much different if they had switched places. Berggren is two years older though.

I always thought it was pretty obvious that Raymond played a much better game for North America. Berggren is a very solid, top 6 prospect but Raymond is clearly the better player

Raymond is the much better scorer, I think with development he could score 30-40 goals.
Berggren's ceiling is probably 20-25 goals. But I think many are underrating his qualities in terms of skill and playmaking, he's pretty much exactly what the Wings #2PP needs.

Has anyone followed his AHL rookie season? You know, closely.

Some serious production there!.

20 goals (7 gwg) and 60 points. 0.90 ppg.

Currently the 3rd highest rookie scorer in the AHL. Grand Rapids has been awful most of this season and Berggren has been their best player most nights. And just like in the SHL Berggren is the guy transporting the puck up ice a lot for Grand Rapids.

The knock on him as a skilled perimeter guy was something he shed last season and he's continued to prove that he isn't a shrinking violet in the AHL. I've even seen him lay out some opposing players on rare occasions. There's a bit of chipiness to his game.

But like any skilled offensive winger he still needs to improve on his defensive positioning. I think if he can clean up that side of his game a bit this offseason he's the kind of guy that could develop into a solid top 6er on most teams around the league.

Any Teemu Pulkkinen vibes?

Any Teemu Pulkkinen vibes?

Not at all. Aside from Berggren being a puck transporting playmaker and Pulkkinen being a sniper needing to be setup, Pulkkinen's problem was skating and predictability. You always knew where Pulkkinen would be on the ice setting up for a one-timer.

Berggren's skating would put probably put him top 3 or 4 on the current Detroit team and he's a superior stickhandler. I think these things alone will make him more likely to stick to an NHL lineup.

Really different players.

Berggren is a really good skater and great with the puck on his stick. Pulkkinen was a shooter that couldnt kate very well. Berggren has a lot of Nyquist in his game.

Berggren has had dominant seasons back to back now in 2 of the toughest leagues in the world at a young age. Bodes well for him as a top 6 winger in the future. He should make Detroit next season

The perimeter concerns have not been eliminated for me, but he’s gone a long way to show that he can still be effective on a smaller rink. I need to see him in the NHL try to handle the speed and skill of high level defensemen. I still have mild concern about him being able to create anything by getting to high danger areas of the ice. I believe he will help get other people to those areas, but I’m not sure if he himself will be highly effective in those areas. Raymond has always excelled in that area of the game despite the size and strength disparity, and it’s one reason he’s always been considered a much higher level prospect.

But all that being said, Berggren is much more tenacious than Pulkkinen ever was. Teemu was a pushover. Berggren has some good intangible traits going for him. He also plays the game above the NHL average pace, which I think is a massive hurdle for some guys, and he skates at a high level. I’m confident in Berggren’s future being a very high end third line winger, more likely a quality second line wing with the potential to be a fringe first line offensive spark plug. Defense will likely never be his thing, but it’s not Vrana’s thing either. When you’re really good at offense, you can look past some minor flaws.

Finishing 18th in AHL scoring is not "dominant."
I think he should be in Detroit next season, but Berggren wasn't even going to lead this team in scoring until Hirose got called up and Barber at 1+ point/per game also has him beat.
Berggren is also a team worst -18, so that's something to look at too.

But actually watching him play, one could call him "dominant". Especially on the back half of this season. He is a play driver in the AHL. And just because a 28 year old journeyman and a 25 year old tweener in his 4th AHL season had slightly higher ppg than he did as a 21 year old rookie, it does nothing to diminish how good he has been for the Griffs. I just pray that Blash is gone so that there's less of a chance that Berggren has to cut his teeth on a 4th line with Adam Erne or some other plug next season. The Mike Babcock school of putting your skilled, creative player in the bottom of the line up (so that he can play realgood and be heavy out there while he works his way up to playing with actual talent) needs to find its way to the dumpster.
