C/RW Jonatan Berggren - Skelleftea, SWE JRs (2018, 33rd, DET)

Apparently he has the second most assists ever for a 20 year old in history in the SHL/SEL. Henrik Sedin had 6 more than him in 2 more games. Really good play making company to be in
and berggren did it while getting third line minutes. the kid is going to take time to adjust but he's going to be such a breath of fresh air.

26 points in his last 25 games in the AHL. It's high time Stevie Y gives him a much earned call up. He could play top 6 minutes every time the Wings play in Canada.

I dont mind him staying the whole year in the AHL with how hes playing, then get a couple games in the NHL to end the year and give him a taste. I would say hes definitely deserving of one though, youre right.

It's funny how when the Wings had a good team everyone was complaining about "overcooking" prospects. Now that we have prospects who could actually help the NHL team everyone's fine with overcooking Berggren.

Imo, he's earned a call-up. If he gets 5-10 games and looks like he's struggling, send him back down.

I agree that he’s found his groove and could probably hack it in the NHL, but if we aren’t going to give him an adequate role, do you think you still want to give him that audition?

And it’s not that he can’t earn more of a role, I just don’t believe that he would be given that chance. In short order your top 6 will be some combo of Larkin, Raymond, Bertuzzi, Fabbri, Suter and Vrana.

Then you need to figure out what’s going to happen with Namestnikov. Best case scenario, Berggren ends up on a line with Rasmussen and your choice of Zadina, Erne, Namestnikov…Gagner? The temperature on Zadina is clearly low in the fan base, so people won’t want that. Erne might be the worst player on the team this year of those we expected a little production from. Yes, even worse than Zadina.

Regardless, Berggren needs a scorer on his line at the NHL level as he breaks into the league. Not giving him that guy will just make his transition much more difficult. And the Wings don’t have that guy available outside the top 6 of you aren’t going to give Zadina a shot.

Fair points but Wings need to find ways to improve their depth scoring. I would look at it more from the viewpoint of what Berggren might do for the team.
Berggren together with Rasmussen+Zadina is on paper a very interesting 3rd line for a variety of reasons. It gives Rasmussen two skilled wingers, it gives Zadina a playmaker, it gives Berggren a big body next to him and a guy who, in theory, should be able to score goals.. worth a look imo.

And that’s the theory in a nutshell. It’s a like that should work because it gives them all a linemate that offers a solution to the thing they are missing themselves.

Of course things never work as you think they will, so this would never happen or never work

I think theres a middle ground. Berggren's first year in North America not getting a call up vs someone like Nyquist who was like 6 years post draft before getting a shot and only staying up because he put up 28 goals in 50 something games because of injuries.

An undersized guy like Berggren getting one full season in North America is wayyyy different than what used to go on. Theres also young guys like Raymond and Seider coming up ASAP and playing which never happened back then so its not as crazy waiting on Berggren

I don’t think it’s surprising at all. Back then, we were veteran heavy, needed a youth infusion desperately, and the usual prospect suspects had several pro seasons in NA before being called up.

Berg, on the other hand, would be joining 3-4 other rookies and a handful of other youth projects on the Wings. There’s only so much established support to go around. And this is Berg’s first NA season. There are still things he can learn in the A, particularly on the defensive side of things.

At the same time, the worse the NHL team the easier it should be for a good prospect to get a look, no?
Just think it's funny how times have changed. I still remember the fanbase being upset because Mitch Callahan or Xavier Ouellet didn't make the team out of camp. Now we're fine with leaving a PPG Berggren in GR all year. It's a bit backwards.

Why are you dummies talking about Bertuzzi on Berggrens thread. Is it because there last name starts with a B? Just trying to seethe correlation between the two.

Fabbri shouldn't be top 6 lock. He's been meh all season, a massive defensive liability and a turnover machine. Still don't get why Yzerman rushed to resign him. Berggren could very well supplant him if given an opportunity imo

You'll re-sign the asset youre gonna trade.

Asset management.

They could have traded him as a rental this deadline. Now they have to wait 3 more years for a guy who's role will likely decrease over that time and ultimately return less than he maybe could have this year. Maybe Yzerman can work out a trade before that but I doubt anybody is dying to acquire Fabbri at 4M per.
