C/RW Jonatan Berggren - Skelleftea, SWE JRs (2018, 33rd, DET)

How does Berggren compare to a Nyquist or Jarnkrok?

Who does he remind you of?

He reminds me more of Tatar than either of those guys. They've got different toolsets (Berggren is clearly a better skater and Tomas is a bit tougher and has a way better shot), but they attack the offensive blue line the same way. Both love taking guys 1 on 1 whenever they get the chance too

The year he having this year is surprising because his stats last year weren't really great

Not really all that surprising considering the players skill level and what he had already accomplished up to this point. He is finally healthy this year and it shows.

To me, this guy is a top 20 prospect and climbing fast. Wings fans should be really excited about this kid.

The skill was always there but he had 2 season ending injuries in back to back years. Very little playing time plus back surgery in his D+1 and then shoulder surgery in his D+2.
He was actually on pace for a respectable season for an under 20 player last year before the shoulder injury. To put it into perspective, he was scoring at roughly the same pace as Lucas Raymond was this season. He also had 5 points for Sweden at the WJC while playing in a 3rd line role.

This guy has the hands and wheels combination that should have put him squarely in the top 10 of the draft but he was about 5'8" or 5'9" (but generously listed as 5'10" sometimes) during his draft year. He's probably 5'10" now, but looks to have gotten a lot stronger on his skates and he isn't afraid to give a guy a whack if someone's getting a little too rough.

He's definitely got first line upside and I'm looking forward to him helping the wings. We need a puck transporter like him through the neutral zone because the guy can really get a team's transition game going.

Between him, Zadina and Raymond they will make one of Mantha or Bert expendable. The Wings will have some very good Wingers (heh) by the time the rebuild is over.

I don’t see why Bert shouldn’t play on a third line if every prospect pans out. Red Wings aren’t cap strapped so they can afford a deep team.
