C/RW Jonatan Berggren - Skelleftea, SWE JRs (2018, 33rd, DET)

Another day, another bunch of Berggren highlights. Just scored.

Good stuff. Not to be a debbie downer, but on that first highlight, even the worst NHL defensemen poke check that puck away ten times out of ten. Dunno WTF that guy is doing.

Nice article on his breakthrough season

SHL Spotlight: Jonatan Berggren

"I've built confidence and everything feels easier. It feels like the game is in slow motion. It is kind of nice being in that zone, having that feeling. You see passing lanes that are so obvious, yet they're not. I've been on the other end of that, when a two metre pass is the hardest thing in the world," he says.

Berggren has a higher ceiling for sure. Much better puck distributor really, among other things.

A long time ago we Wings fans on this forum and others thought Nyquist had 70-80 point potential for a ceiling.

My bet is that Berggren, if he can stay healthy and all things pan out, ends up a 50-ish point winger who makes a living on the powerplay. He's really good with open ice and I can see him becoming a specialist in the NHL.

I disagree. Offensively they are similar. But Nyquist was a puck hound and a great two way player at Maine and in GR. Berggren hasn’t shown that yet.
I think they are pretty similar and I see shades of Nyquist in his highlights. But I think Nyquist is getting underrated here. Nyquist has good speed and great hockey sense/passing. I would be happy if Berggren becomes a Nyquist clone and gives you 50+ points from the wing. Nyquist is a really good player.

You have to realize that what Berggren is currently doing puts him in some pretty exclusive company among swedish players. It remains to be seen how high he can keep his scoring, but imo he's been snakebit as hell the last several games so I see no indication that he should slow down significantly.

Above him in points/game among U21 forwards in the SHL the last 20 years there's only really Pettersson. Behind him are names like Zetterberg, Bäckström, Nylander.

Nyquist had real potential, flashed it for a while and still turned into a good player, but Berggren is really playing in a higher division as a prospect right now.

All those forwards were also a year or couple younger.

Point being that he's actually pacing way ahead of most comparable players. It's just a pace, but even if he puts up something "conservative" like 20 points in the next 30 games he'll still end up with a scoring pace that's only beaten by a select few U21 players in the SHL the last 20 years.

We've seen 40-50 point wingers coming through the SHL before. Few have been close to doing what Berggren is currently at the same age (or younger).

Pretty excited about this player. I think Nyquist and Barzal comparisons are quite good actually. I think he realistically can be somewhere in between these players in terms of impact in the NHL. If we compare him to Zetterberg I think he is not far behind in his development. I dont know, but somehow I think Zetterberg got a lot bigger role in Timrå than Berggren so far have had in Skellefteå (only 15min per game). He has insane p/60 stats. Also, we should not compare Berggren to others of the same age since he got so much of his most crucial development years ruined by injuries. It actually pretty cool that he is doing so well now.

Sweden have some really good forwards coming up now instead of just defensemen which is nice for a change.

Nowhere near the natural defensive awareness of Zetterberg.
