C Noah Östlund - Djurgardens IF J20, J20 Nationell (2022, 16th, BUF)

Djurgardens has become one of the best prospect development clubs in Europe. Centre Noah Ostlund is one of four prospects who could go in the first round. He spent the majority of his season in the J20 league. Ostlund put up nine goals and 33 assists for 42 points in 32 games. He also put up five goals and two assists for seven points in five playoff games. Ostlund led the league in playoff goals and Djurgardens fell in the J20 Final. He joined the J18 team for the playoffs as well. Ostlund picked up two goals and seven points in four games, helping the Djurgardens affiliate to the J18 Championship. Ostlund also had a call-up to the SHL, but had trouble getting consistent ice time. He played 11 games but did not record a point.

I really like the things Ive seen in this player but been working with minimal sample sizes. Does anyone know where I can find some full game shift-by-shifts?

I've noticed some very settle stick work in traffic of him maintaining puck control that displays some massive skill in my eyes. He can make some flashy plays but doesn't seem to make it a regular part of his game. But it sure seems to be there when he needs it. Some of those plays remind me of Austin Matthews ability in those particular situations. I'm talking receiving a pass in the offensive zone with 2 players right on him having the ability to somehow quickly bounce it off his skate on to his stick make a quick move and distribute the puck when most players would have coughed it up, just those delicate little plays that require precision in very tight conditions in order to maintain control.

It seems like from clips etc that a team is gonna need to really encourage him to shoot it more, develop confidence in his shot.

Wheels and the passing seem great.

Anybody else see a Sergei Samsonov clone?

I'm definitely not great at players comparison so I might be way off, but that's who he reminds me of.

Nice call back. Samsonov was an absolute treat as a young player before injuries took their toll. One of the shiftiest and most dynamic “short” players I’ve seen - and he was built like a little squat tank. I remember the hype he had as a teenager when he had already had a great season with CSKA and then came and dominated the IHL before he was even drafted - and he certainly delivered when he stepped immediately into the NHL.

Ostlund isn’t quite as squat and probably needs to add a lot of strength to do what Samsonov did at the NHL level and I’m not sure he’s got the goal scoring ability but the slick movement, stick handling and IQ in tight spaces as an undersized player does have some of that Samsonov type feel. Not the same level as a prospect though.

You hit the nail with the description and you put into words exactly why Ostlund reminds me of Samsonov, thank you!!

Lol No offence but they’re not even on the same planet I think Karl Henrikssons upside is a middle sixer, while Östlund is probably the swedish prospect with the mot upside this draft.
He is going to get picked top 10 and hf boards is going to go insane. Going to be hilarious to watch. 'His ____ stats suck' then compare him to someone that didn't make it after never watching him play. Gonna be like clockwork. Meanwhile all the scouts that I've talked to that watch him say he is the best swede in the draft.

Pretty much this.

I was asking because I genuinely didn't know, I've only seen him play at the U18s.

That would make for some good draft night drama if it happens. I am curious to see where he ends up on Bob M's final list. He was not ranked highly at all on his mid-season list, but I imagine he will be a lot higher.

I agree, I think he goes somewhere 7-10. Hopefully to Detroit at 8

Wait seriously? I'm glad to hear that. Hopefully that means there's a chance a team "reaches" for him in the top 10.

Not sure he'll go top 10 but I agree hes the best Swedish prospect.

I also think Odelius goes before most of the CHL guys that are rated above him on these lists

I wouldnt be surprised if he ends up on Columbus or Detroit. Sens have shown interest too i have heard.

I would be very happy if the leafs get him! Seems like a very good player potentially

Skating and puck handling is nice and all, but I don't see it translating to high danger scoring chances often enough. That's the main difference between him and Lekkerimäki, the latter has a better understanding of where the dangerous areas are, making him a much more effective player.

I'd definitely use a 1st on Östlund. But never a top 10 pick

I think that's the concern of nearly every center prospect in this draft. But teams need centers and therefore are going to look for hope and continue to prioritize them and draft them

Highly doubt Östlund plays center at the NHL level.

I looked some of your post history. You seemed extremely high on Ostlund earlier in the season. Claiming things like he is a complete player.

I understand having doubts if he's good enough to be top 6 player in the NHL. But not understanding why you think he wouldn't be able to play center? Thats all I see when I watch him. He lacks on the killer offensive instincts but the game certainly goes through Ostlund. The pucks always on his stick, his teammates look for him when they have it, he's great at carrying the puck in all 3 zones, he plays the position responsibly in his own zone. He can handle the puck in danger in his own zone and make an outlet play. All the things I like in centers.

If you miss Nazar and want a player like that, take this dude later on. Both are extremely hard working players with offensive skill.

“I doubt he plays centre in the NHL”
The go to hfboards comment for every single centre prospect who has ever been up for the draft.😀

I’ve said that plenty of times. Can’t think of a single time i’ve ended up being wrong either.

William Eklund, William Nylander, Lucas Raymond and now Noah Östlund. Wing, wing, wing and wing.
