I’ve said that plenty of times. Can’t think of a single time i’ve ended up being wrong either.

William Eklund, William Nylander, Lucas Raymond and now Noah Östlund. Wing, wing, wing and wing.

Doesn't take a genius to call that. Undersized players must have about a 98% shot to end up a winger in the NHL.

I don't think anyone projected Raymond as a center to begin with, Not to many people on Eklund either at the NHL level.

How Ostlund plays the game projects as center, his height is just enough for it to not be completely against him, up to him to put on the weight and strength. He needs to be able to play around 190-200 in order to do that.

Don't really see Östlund being a winger. Either he succeeds as a C in the NHL or he likely won't stay in the league over the long-term. His game is tailor-made to play in the middle. To me, stylistically, he's like a Barzal clone with a bit of Jack Hughes thrown in there. Neither of those guys are very big either but the game flows through them when they're on the ice. I see the same in Östlund. He's an amazing puck-carrier and will be a machine at zone entries. You don't put a guy like him on the wing, that defeats his entire purpose and biggest talent.

I agree with that. However I did just realize his combine stats came back at 5'10" which is concerning. From someone with a lot of experience with fitness and strength/muscle building, that inch can really change things. It really starts working against you if you can't reach atleast 190lbs. I don't really know what his frame looks like as I can't seem to find any recent pictures of him on not in hockey gear.

He certainly needs to put on a lot of weight over the next couple seasons if he's going to play pro in NA. It is concerning that he is still sitting in the 160s as of the combine.

This would be my biggest concern drafting him, I would need to find out what his frame is capable of reaching. Obviously if you put on to much weight for your frame it can slow you down a lot
So there can be physical limitations regardless of how hard you are willing to work. 5'10 to 5'11 for most people's frames seems to be the difference of playing in the 180s or 190s.

If he was any bigger he wouldn't be going in the 17-30 range.

There's definitely some risk with Ostlund. I'm hoping he's just a late bloomer. He was listed at 5'9 143 last year and now he's up to 5'10 164. It's encouraging when a guy is still growing in height at his 18th birthday, about 90% of guys are done adding height before their 17th birthday.

If he can end up at 5'11 180 that will be plenty I think. There are many many good players playing at 180 or less. Aho for example is 6'0 and plays at 176 lbs. He's elusive and sharp, like Ostlund, so it doesn't matter too much. 190 lbs isn't really necessary. If Ostlund makes it, he'll have to be stronger than he is now, but he doesn't need that much strength because he's that Marner player type that only takes contact on his own terms.

I really like his vision, creativity, puckhandling and playmaking skills. He needs to get a lot stronger and to make his shot better. Reminds me Sebastian Aho.

He plays similar to William Eklund. I think Eklund has better natural hockey sense and feel for the game but yeah Ostlund might be a little more skillful.

I really like the things Ive seen in this player but been working with minimal sample sizes. Does anyone know where I can find some full game shift-by-shifts?

I've noticed some very settle stick work in traffic of him maintaining puck control that displays some massive skill in my eyes. He can make some flashy plays but doesn't seem to make it a regular part of his game. But it sure seems to be there when he needs it. Some of those plays remind me of Austin Matthews ability in those particular situations. I'm talking receiving a pass in the offensive zone with 2 players right on him having the ability to somehow quickly bounce it off his skate on to his stick make a quick move and distribute the puck when most players would have coughed it up, just those delicate little plays that require precision in very tight conditions in order to maintain control.
The Hlinka site has a few full games from last summer

Kind of getting a Zegras feel. Tho he doesn't use his teammates as effectively.

Skating is phenomenal, but always going 100mph. And not much of a shooting threat.

Kind wonder how his game will translate.

He’s definitely physically immature. Will take him around 3 years to add the weight up to 175-180 lbs and carry it throughout a season . Seguin loses close to 10 lbs from the start to end of the season so it’s important to not only add the weight but be able to carry it through a season. Have to give the kid time to do that.

A lot of his warts seem to stem from just not being strong enough right now.

So in determining his upside have to answer whether he has the frame to add the weight, is he committed to the off ice strength and conditioning along with the nutrition needed to add the weight properly, does he have the compete to get into the battle despite being knocked down? If he can do that then he’s got a chance of being a good player in the future.

His ability to come out of a turn, snap a pass to a player that he couldn't have seen then accelerate to open ice is special. Looks like Barzal a little, I see what all the scouts love. Skating is very elite, so is his vision. Hows his shot? Will he get stronger/bigger? I bet someone bets on it, I think someone takes a chance on him early.

I see more of an Aho/Barzal kind of player then Zegras for sure. At the junior level he is a magician on zone entries and combines elite hockey IQ (definitely one of the best in this draft class) with a high end motor and hard work in general. Love this player and should be gone around pick 20 100%. Just a question of if he’ll be able to replicate and improve upon this against men next year.

I actually like Aho comparison a lot.

Aho was known in his draft year as professor/high iq type player. He was similar type of guy who basically ran the whole line and made his line mates better(see laine - aho - pulju line in world juniors). Did all the small moves well. If everything works for Östlund, Aho could be nice target for him.

Barzal was more known of his speed, which is really not the high end ability for both, Aho or Östlund. They just problem solve their way out of problems really efficiently with the tools they have.

Oh wow. I am surprised he went so high in the end. Really interesting to see how his game is gonna work out in top level. I am still a fan of his game and it seems like others are warming up to him too.

From second rounder to #16. Interesting play from Buffalo. They decided to fix their center core in this draft in one round.
