Not great.

Don't lose faith Flames fans. You should go back and read the threads on Blake Wheeler and the abuse directed towards the Coyotes over that selection (they fired an entire scouting staff based on that pick). His first few years in the NCAA (after a year in USHL) were mediocre at best. Now he's a Olympian.

I travelled to watch him play several times myself and never thought he would make it past the third line. At one game I actually sat beside a Flames scout and he was less enthusiastic than I was (although he strongly encouraged me to watch a player on North Dakota that he flat out loved and without hesitation said he was #1 player in the draft; that kid was Toews). Keep the faith.

My theory is that Calgary was aiming for one of Grigorenko or Faska and when both were taken just spots before them they decided to take the risk with Janko as they wanted size and traded down to secure a safer pick (Sieloff).

The kid is one month older than Monahan and had huge gains in size during his draft year. Sure he's not putting points up to expectations but we are slowly seeing progression in his play at least that is encouraging. He already has the same goal totals as last year in 15 less games. That said, i'm not really expecting much from Jankowski or have any expectation of him to dominate or even make the NHL.

I'm not "giving up" on Jankowski...but it was on draft day, and still is today - a terrible choice.

At 14th overall, we could have selected Hertl, Ceci, or Laughton and then after the trade to gain the 2nd, at 21st we could have selected Maatta or Subban.

ANY of these choices would have been better. John Weisbrod was an idiot and I'm still glad he's no longer anywhere near the Flames draft.

You can add Girgensons, who was taken by Buffalo with that very pick.

He was taken too early. But what was a worse was that the flames picked him. The flames were thin for prospects and needed a guy that would turn out. Janko is a boom/bust risky 5 year project. Hed be perfect for a team like Chicago or Detroit who are rich in forward prospects and could afford to wait and risk the chance he busts.

A lot of the guys drafted around that 15th pick are tearing up their leagues or in the NHL and janko is struggling in the NCAA.

Still a good project but picked too early

So... How has he been doing/looking this year?
Not as badly as stats watchers want you to believe.

He has 7 goals and 12 points in 20 games. When you look at the raw numbers they are no that impressive. However all stats should be put into some context.
Jankowski is 3rd on his team in point and 2nd in goals. He has moved to center this year after playing the wing last year and has been working on playing an effective 2-way game.

He is centering the Friars 2nd line, his 3 most common linemates (Army, MacPhee & Mingoia) have a combined 8 goals on the year, while he has already managed to match his total from last year.
I think when you look at his numbers in context they are not that bad, not great or spectacular, but not bad either. Scoring 12 points in 20 games while playing with less than talented linemates on a defensive minded team is not half as bad as it's made out to be.

Ya ths Flames drafted much better before Weisbrod. Chucko, Nemisz, Pelech, Irving... all great players in the NHL.

Id be more worried about Burkes input on the draft... dude's a disaster.

2011, arguably our best draft year ever, was run by Button. 2012 our draft was run by Weisbrod (hence the NCAA picks), 2013 was again run by Button and looks to be a good draft for us as well.

As long as Burke/NewGM listens to our scouts, we should be fine. Im glad Weisbrod is gone, dude has a boner for the NCAA and him and feaster both think they are smarter than everyone else in hockey.

We could have had TT for cripes sake... ****ing Jankowski.

I've never heard this before. Can you post your sources?

2011 draft was definitely Button. That was the year Sutter was let go, and Feaster said he just went with the scouts' picks. 2012 was pretty much Weisbrod's draft. He was in charge of all the scouts that year. I can't remember where it was said that after the 2012 draft Weisbrod was blocked out a bit more, but it does sound familiar.

That is actually really interesting. I was sort of under the impression that he had been running things for a while, and was being credited with the scouting that was happening .

Heard it in an interview with the coach and a Providence fan that had stopped by the Flames board to discuss Gillies.

I don't have a link for it, but it was said in an interview with one of the coaching staff. It may be on the team website, but I'm not 100% sure.
A Providence fan confirmed this as well over on the Flames board when he stopped in to chat about Gillies during the WJC

I get the impression Weisbrod thought he was smarter than he really was. Ended up getting himself fired pretty easily.

Burke even said he would go off on trips without an explanation and he was never really "Around".

Either way, glad he is gone, cant be wasting top picks in a rebuild.

Great listen. His coach seems to think pretty highly of him

And from what I hear he is a great coach running a great program, so all these posters calling him a bad pick, bust etc already are easy to drown out when you have him saying all the things you want too hear about a prospect.

I dunno... these posters are pretty good at looking at stats alone and passing judgement. Im almost sure they know better than his actual coach.

Eh it's hive mentality and a resistance to actually being open to doing some background work.

Context can tell a lot about a player. He's doing well considering he's playing on a low scoring team, in his first year as a center at the NCAA level, will very little 2nd line help to work with.

I wonder would this guy even have made the borg-like Finnish WJC roster.. maybe as the extra forward, I guess
