"high risk, high reward"
not true but sure, whatever you say jay

If the potential reward wasn't high, why do you think he was rated as a 1st round pick by multiple teams, and at worst as a 2nd round pick by some scouting organizations, despite the substantial risk of taking a player from a completely unknown, weak prep league? Just 'cuz?

Yes, he's tall, but he was so far from physically developed that I don't think you can even make the Hugh Jessiman size argument. I honestly don't see any answer to his predraft ranking, his draft status, and the other teams that wanted him other than "potential" (i.e. high reward).

The thing that irritates me so much about Jankowski naysayers, and one of the big reasons I want him to succeed, is that everyone dismisses the pick off-hand because "lol Jay Feaster" as though Jay Feaster has been a bad GM, or Jay Feaster was the only GM who would have made this pick. Neither of those premises are remotely true. There's so much willful ignorance that it almost physically hurts.

They're different players. Moroz is a Kassian-esque player while Poirier is a speedy winger and isn't physical at all. I'm sure it's well known that Poirier is the most talented out of the two if that's what you're getting at... But they're completely different players. It's like saying Grandlund is better than Tom Wilson, not really fair now is it? Especially when they both have only played in the CHL.

I'm pretty sure you guys are talking to the same poster that compared Poirier to Hemsky and said he wasn't physical whatsoever.

Yup, one and the same.

It wasn't even that bad of a comment it was just blown way out of proportion. He said that he was going to move the pick until his head of scouting saw Janko play. He said his head of scouting said he believes that Janko could be one of the better players in his draft in the long run. People just took it as Feaster saying he thought Janko was the best player.

I saw it quoted as such:

In 10 years, Feaster predicted, “Jankowski will be viewed as the best player in the 2012 draft,†adding “We felt we could take the gamble.â€

That's idiotic to me because it puts unnecessary pressure on the kid and gives unrealistic expectations to the fanbase. But your mileage may vary.

That isn't the full quote, he referenced it as Weisbrod's opinion. But it's not like it's going to matter ... GM makes bluster comment like a TON of them do, and now everyone here thinks the kid is a joke. Carry on.

I doubt Jank or even Feaster thinks about that quote on a regular basis. And we have a pretty realistic understanding of his potential. He can be a top 6 center man, or bust. Either way, he's doing pretty well so far in his college career.

So how is this guy doing? 12 points in 19 games, he has as many goals as he did last season in 34 games, so I guess he is improving. I really don't have any knowledge about him, just hoping the best for him.

He is still in the project phase of development. Lots of tools but needs to put everything together.

He plays on the 2nd line (first year at center) and on the 2nd pp. While admittedly most Flames fans would love to see him produce more he is still where he is expected to be (that being one of the top players on his team as he learns how to fill out and use his frame). I think almost all Flames fans will tell you they expect him to play all 4 years in the NCAA and then go to the AHL for at least 1 year. He is a long term project.

Look how long it took Blake Wheeler to put it together. He played four years of hockey following his draft year before turning pro, and now he's looking every bit the 5th overall pick he was. Jankowski was drafted what, 21st overall?

Agreed this has been my comparable for his development. (Wheeler also took an extra to join the NCAA)

But why was this kid drafted so early?? Don't they usually take a flyer on this kind of five+ year plans on later rounds. He sounds like some fourth round type of pick.

If Janko ended up going to Dubuque like he originally intended to right after being drafted, he would be right on schedule in terms of development. He took a HUGE step jumping from Canadian high school level to division I hockey AND hockey East of all places.

He is, or should have been. And his production & development is reflective of that.
But Feaster &/or the scouts had their heads up their collective ying yangs.
It was the forward version of the Kings taking Hickey, the Oilers taking Niinimaki.
Stupid.
But not as stupid as the commentary afterward from the Flames brasssaying where he would rank in a few years time.

Well for starters, Jankowski was ranked to go somewhere in the second round. It is widely speculated that there were other teams that would have taken him after 21 in the first round.

Second, if youre not drafting top 5 its worthwhile to take a chance on a kid who has a high ceiling. Jankowski has a high ceiling but is such a raw prospect, there is still a good chance he doesnt reach it. Plus it makes even more sense for a team like the flames, who at the time, lacked high end talent and were stocked with depth guys.

I wont lie, as a Flame fan I wanted Maatta. But i never disliked this pick.
