This one is post-draft: http://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/50530-NHL-scouts-rerank-2012-NHL-draft.html

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=399055

None of these say anything about other teams intending to take him in the 1st, although there were comments made off-hand about it (I don't think anyone went on the record about a particular team, however); but the TSN article states that he was expected to go in the 2nd round, while the other two are rankings that put him at the bottom of the 1st or mid-2nd.

Didnt see anywhere in those links saying other teams would have taken him in the 1st round, In fact, those articles (from Fanboys) clearly show he was a real reach by all his rankings (CSB, ISS & TSN) except for Button, which all had him ranked waaaaay later.
As is now, its pretty clear the pick was a real reach. That could change, but I doubt it

I asked for a source or links because that was the first time I heard that other teams were going to take Janko if the Flames didn't take him at 21. In my opinion I wouldn't have drafted him. It wasn't like the Flames had a stable full of prospects that they could take a gamble on at the time. Just didn't make sense to draft a long term project.

My links were to show that they had all ranked him anywhere from the 2nd round onward (Majority ranked somewhere in the 2nd round).

Okay... But it just sounds a crap shoot. I think Russia is full of "big ceiling" players who don't even get drafted.

Flames scouted Jankowski very thoroughly. I think it was Button that was saying it is tough to scout players like Jankowski who are so much better than the competition around them. Remember, the league where he was at rarely draws any NHL scouts, but at the half-way point onwards, there were regularly 30-50 scouts at each game just to try and scout him.

Was it a mistake? Was it a shrewd pick? Well, time will tell.

The argument will always be "Should the Flames have risked throwing a pick away on a guy who is such a project if it fails?". Well, nobody else in the draft had the combination of size and skill at where the Flames were drafting out of. If they go it wrong and he busts, it will just look terrible. If he reaches his ceiling, then it will be a great pick.

I think the risk is passing. Jankowski has the size (needs a couple more seasons to fill into it though - crazy growth-spurt), hockey-IQ, skills and skating ability to make it in the NHL, but perhaps at a lower-line. I don't see him as a boom-bust type of player. He may never be the gamebreaker or reach anywhere close to his ceiling, but I would bet that he becomes an NHL'er.

Not bad at 14 trading down and picking up Sieloff (which factored into the equation). Just.. a project, but the Flames aren't going to be competing for at least 2 years, if not more. I actually love this pick still. Will be fun to see how it turns out.

“We knew he was playing in a league where a lot of people would undervalue him,†said Weisbrod. “He was playing against weaker competition. He was playing in obscure places. We knew that would help downgrade him in some team’s minds.

“If you want to let a guy lay in the weeds, that was a good place to do it.â€

But when selection No. 21 arrived, it was now or never.

“I don’t want to share anyone’s business,†said Weisbrod, “but I know he wouldn’t have made it through [the first round]. I know at least two teams that would have taken him. We knew we had to take him [Friday] — it was just a matter of where.â€

Took me about 3 seconds to google an article. Step your internet game up.

Plus Craigslist on TSN had him ranked 14th pre draft. And thehockeynews re ranking last season had Jankowski at 25. Better get a link up for that too. http://m.thn.com/?content=8d347d726612b1b324acc4ee58d31c9b&section=columns-brian_costello

No kidding.
He was ranked 43 as a NA skater by CSB. That would put him (Im guessing here a bit) somewhere in the 3rd round.

You guessed wrong. That would put him in the first half of the second round. Come on, 30 picks a round...

not to mention Craig button had him at 14 in his last rankomg.

and since when is a season and a half enough to judge a young player let alone a prospect? jankowksi was a teenager jumping from high school hockey to the NCAA. thats a huge jump. most kids go the the ushl for at least a year if not two before making that jump. toss in the fact that jankiwski literally grew a massive amount in his draft year and is still growing and you can see a player that is going to be a longer developing prospect. plus he's learning how to play center and doesn't exactly have much offensive help to work with.

give the kid a chance to develop before writing him off.

and one of the teams that was speculated to have taken jankowksi had the flames passed on him was the devils. most devil fans believe that they would have taken him and the idea for keeping the pick was to draft him instead of matteau

43 in NORTH AMERICAN rankings. Hockey players exist outside of North America...

As a completely neutral fan I remember at the time Jankowski was one of the biggest risers in the draft. I remember TSN guys (Bob Mack I think) saying he could go late first even. He was a reach where he was picked but no one at the draft thought he would make it out of the second round

This. And your right, it was Mackenzie who called out Jankowski for being a rapid riser.

In the end, no one seems to have much respect for the talent evaluation abilities of Feaster/Weisbrod, which is fair enough. I think its safe at this point to say that Janko was taken too high, he simply is not a 1st round talent, given who was taken both before and after him. That being said, it might not turn out tragically for Calgary either; Janko does have some pretty slick stickhandling, good wheels and very nice vision. I've seen him play a few times this year and if he ever grows into that frame, he could be a really good 3rd line center for someone, one that can actually create some offense and be a 200 foot player. we'll see in another two or three years. but he was definitely taken too soon, Brian Burke called out that draft choice as a reason for Feaster's firing. The fact that Weisbrod thought he had found the next Stevie Y doesn't hold up very well to hindsight either.

He is, or should have been. And his production & development is reflective of that.
But Feaster &/or the scouts had their heads up their collective ying yangs.
It was the forward version of the Kings taking Hickey, the Oilers taking Niinimaki.
Stupid.
But not as stupid as the commentary afterward from the Flames brasssaying where he would rank in a few years time.
The difference between Jankowski as a project and someone like Gaudreau as a project is size. The size combined with a high ceiling will make teams take chances earlier. It's not uncommon, in fact it's a regular occurrence.

Source or links please.
speculation was that Jankowski was one of the reasons New Jersey did not forfeit their pick that year. I don't have a link nor do I care to search for one but I clearly remember the Devils as being one of the teams speculated to grab him. Also in discussions I have had with an NHL amateur scout I can assure you that he was ranked top 30 in another teams list as well but their pick was top 10 and were hoping he would fall to them in round 2 but were not surprised at all when he didn't.

Central scouting ranking don't mean anything. What needs to be recognized is that he was a riser headed into the draft, players that are rising entering the draft often get picked ahead of where they were ranked and fallers usually get picked behind where they were ranked, it's the nature of the draft.

I'm not saying he'll make it or not but I feel he should have done at least a year in the USHL. I believe his rights were owned by Dubuque a good program.

This is correct. Nothing means anything. But he was clearly a reach, & a big one at that. And it is also clear imo that he has done nothing to suggest he wasn't a reach.

I fully expect him to be a huge bust and another reason why Feaster was fired.

Was a stupid pick then (Terevainen was still on the board along with Maata etc.), and it's still a stupid pick.

Sure he is tall and has decent hands, but his compete level seems to be really low and i don't think he will ever amount to anything at the NHL level.

Bust pick.

I know he values education and all that crap, but IMO he should jump ship and go to the OHL. He's in such a low-scoring envirronment, and he's no longer so skinny that it needs to be urgently addressed.

I believe Saginaw owns his rights. He should go there and try to develop his offensive game.

Tall, smooth skating center with good hands and good vision. Worth the risk in my book

Terevainen was gone at pick 18, but Maata was still available. Or a player like Subban for your goaltending needs (Kipper was old even before he decided to retire out of the blue)

It was a large risk to take for Feaster and brass, and a project pick for a team that was starting to get older and go into a rebuild was not a great idea.

Kiprusoff didn't retire out of the blue...

And with Teravainen he was on the board with the Flames pick, they moved down right before drafting though, which is probably what he's talking about.
