The circus is that Hockey Canada is even considering this. The player in question is not an exceptional talent and apparently he missed the cutoff for applying for ES. Hockey Canada should not be in the business of being the recruitment arm for the CHL. If he wants to play in the States at SSM and then on to the NCAA, good for him, that's the path he should pursue.

Maybe they decided that the deadline was inappropriate for a league whose draft is in June and not in April like the OHL draft and so they decided to determine the case on its merits.

I've never seen him play so I don't know if hes truly exceptional, but I do know he'd go first overall over the other 16 year olds, so he's gotta be quite good I'd imagine.

The rumor I heard was that he received an exception (which he applied for before the deadline).

According to this he was initially refused for applying to late but then they appealed.

I imagine what happened was he wanted to wait for the outcome of the draft lottery to apply - he wouldn't have done it if Acadie-Bathurst had 1st overall, but when Saint John won, that changed things.

Pretty much yeah.

And OP.

He's good but not McDavid.

Not Drouin either, next year he'd likely be Drouin good for Midget

This status is a joke now.

What's next if your actually a truly exceptional player you gain exemption to play junior at 14?

:shakehead

Isn't Xavier Parent a superior player compared to Veleno as well, that might make it 2 straight years if they keep this up.

Legit the most stupid decision wth, first its too late than they bend the rules for a player who isn't even exceptional...

For what its worth, the OHL gave it out 3 years in a row to McDavid, Ekblad, and Day.

Edit: Hockey Canada granted it to OHL players.

I still think SJ Goes with Bowers first overall.. don't see that changing. But I can see them coming out of this with Veleno and Bowers which would make them the best in the league in my opinion.

Per John Moore via Twitter,

GM Young "we are pleased that a high level player has chosen to play in the Q. It's a great day for the Sea Dogs."

Seems like everyone is saying they'll end up with both Bowers and Veleno.

Does anyone know if the draft will be streamed? I know a new network is showing it in Quebec, but think it's ridiculous to not stream it as well after doing so in years past.

Seems like the rumours have Veleno going #1 to Sj with Bathurst taking Morand at #2 with.

This means that SJ likely only has to move up to #3 overall if they want both Veleno and Bowers.

THE Q and Hockey Canada blinked.

The threat to not return to AAA and go to the states scared some people.

He is a great player but, lets not get carried away.

Wait til Parent comes up. He has more of an edge to his game.

He was never going the NCAA route, he just didn't want to play Midget AAA again.

Parent doesn't have that edge..
