Welcome to the State of Hockey! Prep lost a ton so he'll be able to step right in and play Prep like Crosby did his sophomore year. Wonder if Wahlstrom will make Prep as a 9th grader... TJ Walsh will probably make it, too, if he's still at Shattuck.

That could be a crazy amount of young talent on that team.

Apparently Hockey Canada had set a deadline of Feb. 15......so he was wayyy late.

Looks like he was waiting to make sure he wasn't going to Bathurst IMO.

He missed the deadline. Did this have anything to do with his falling out with his original agent?

I cannot see him returning to Midget AAA.

He wasn't THAT dominant in Midget AAA anyway, ESPECIALLY if the stories about him getting many phantoms assists is true.

The kid is a terrific player. Lets be clear.

However, he has been EXTREMELY highly promoted over the last 2-3 years.

It is pretty clear the bridges were burned with his AAA team so going back is not an option. Can he go to another Midget AAA team?

The rumor was prep school and then the Q thing came back on front burner.

So now a bidding war starts for his services.

I still do not get the rush to move him on a fast path. The draft still is when the draft is.

In the iso vids I've seen of him it is obvious he has great hockey IQ, hands and and skills but he doesn't seem any more exceptional than Tyler Benson was. To me 52 in 41 is not dominant enough. Good for sure, but when you think of players that deserve exceptional status such as Crosby and McDavid you'd have to think what kind of numbers they would put up. He is 6-7 months younger than Beauvillier and Duclair when they played in the league and whom both put up better ppg average. An exceptional prospect should have more production than he did but it's tough to judge in the Q because there has been no preceding case.

With a 14-15 year old you just never know if they have hit their peak already. Lets see how he does in next couple of years.

What kind of impact would he realistically have next season if this is true?

Can't see him producing right off the bat, though it might depend where he lands. In Saint John he would be sheltered for sure, they have a great team and a deep offense for next season. Could start producing in the 2nd half if he earns more ice time or if there are injuries.

I don't see Veleno in the same vein as Crosby or Tavares, I don't expect him to dominate the Q at 15 or 16 at all. Can see him breaking out in his NHL draft year though, could be a 100 pts scorer by then.

If he lands 2nd overall in Bathurst, he might have more ice time, because the Titan are a weaker team, though they do have some good forwards, and if I'm not mistaken, they have the #1 overall pick in the import draft. They'd have someone like say Sokolov to go along with Simpson, Maher, Boivin, Blanchard and Popov, which isn't a bad top-6, but an easier one top crack for Veleno.

Thanks for the feedback! So is he better/worse than Sean Day as an exceptional status player?

Having seen him play, he is a top talent. Is he exceptional, no. He was on a team where a lot of his points came from the bench and his line mates were excellent and made him look good. I think he has a much better hockey IQ than Day, but he risks the same fate by going to the Q too early . Another year in MAAA would do him good. Even Drouin stayed half of his second year in MAAA until December and he was much more dominant than Veleno.

Will he go to any team? (serious question didn't follow his career)

Part of the deal for him to apply for status was that he go to a bigger market / dev team, so he will not report to any team. Part of the exceptional process is that he could step into the top 9 on the Jr team right away. HC clearly getting pressure from the '..let us draft him or we lose him to Shattuck ' camps, honestly it would be just as good for him to complete another year of Midget. If this 99 crew was like the 98 crew in terms of some first 3 rounds depth i dont think him getting status is even a consideration.

From the sounds of it this kid is no where near exceptional which is ''Crosby, Tavares, McDavid'' level for a forward. Unless your that level you should have no right obtaining the status. Hockey Canada has to stop dumbing this down, there'll be plenty of talents with higher levels of skill coming up post 2000 borns, wait until an actual talent arrives, it's not like he's going to the States and getting citizenship to play for them.

This.

Exceptionnal status should be for exceptionnal players only, not really good ones like Day and Veleno for example.
