Absolutely loved his post draft interview. "If I'm not good enough to be a first rounder, then I need to work harder". Amazing attitude. No wonder Button called him the best leader in the draft. I mean, he's already incredibly hard working. He fell due to limited offensive upside.

I think he will get likely 2 years of CHL development to work on that though. The Blues have depth at forward and can be patient with him. I think he can work on the offensive side of things.

his offensive upside is not limited, the guy has good speed, excellent IQ, good passing, great work ethic in the offensive, he makes things happen, would not shock me to see him being a consistent 50-60 point man in the NHL with being able to play on the PK and PP on special teams as well as be a team leader.

Thank you, I loved his game before the draft and was crushed that the Sabres didn't take him. I have yet to hear a clearly thought out reason why his offensive won't "translate". All I saw was a guy who made a lot of smart iq type plays as well as the flash. Not a lot of long shots so I was speculating people didn't like his shot power, but I don't get it.

Barbashev is a late birthday so this upcoming season will be essentially his 19yo CHL season and final one. He will go to the AHL or straight to the Blues after that.

After next season I don't think many people will be questioning his offensive numbers. Him and Tkachev will both have 90+ points and if not top 5 scoring top 10 for sure.

He personally reminds be of Chris Drury. Would that be an outlandish comparison scoutman?

You are in the right camp. Barbashev's fall out of the first had nothing to do with 'what is wrong with him.' Very interesting to hear these concerns now, as no one was questioning his offensive upside when he took a straight line to all his points during the season in the Q.

In the hockey draft world, there will not be a better example of a player falling due to preference lists and not flaw. Every team simply got their guy and Barbashev wasn't him. This is not a guy you look at and say his value was in the 30's' simply because he got drafted there. IE Nick Schmaltz may have been Chicago's 6th rated player. Barbashev could have been a top ten on many lists and still fallen out of the first round.

a lot of hype with this guy... everytime I read articles and comments last few days about these friendly World Junior games, every single person talks about how good he is and dominant he is. Could he be one of the better players that come out of the 2014 draft??

As a Blues fan who is very happy with the pick, I wouldn't say he was dominant. He played well and was the best Russian player. The Canadians clearly targeted him and Buchnevich. But he didn't dominate.

He does have a well-rounded game, though. A lot of guys picked higher have flaws they need to work on more than Barbashev does before making an NHL impact, even if they potentially have higher ceilings. The Blues won't rush him, but it wouldn't surprise me at all to see Barbashev in the NHL in 2015.

Yes. I had he, and Fabbri in my top ten...blues got two huge steals imho.

Biggest steal on draft day, said it from the moment he dropped out of the top-20.
He's going to have a very good season numbers wise since Moncton has a stronger team and Tkachev will be here for the entire year.

Reading more and more about him, I'm getting more upset that the sabres passed on this guy at 31. I really wanted to trade all 3 of our 2nds for a pick in the 15-20 range to get him. When he slipped out of the first round, I thought it couldn't go any better. I'm not upset with Lemieux, he's one of the guys I would have looked at with the pick if Barbashev was unavailable, but I would've much rather had Barbashev.

Great pick by the Blues, they're going to be fearsome for years

I love the lemeiux pick for the sabres. My dream 3rd line is Lemieux Girgensons Fasching.

That would be a sick sick 3rd line.

It would certainly be a pain to play against, that's for sure, and it's definitely a possibility that they could be put together. Ideally I'd have Fasching as a 2nd liner, Girgensons as 3C and Lemieux as a 2nd/3rd line tweener in the style of Marchand, but thats beside the point.

Like I said, I'm not upset at all with Lemieux, I like him at 31 in principle but I expected Barbashev to go much earlier than he did. But I would have preferred Barbashev, I just love his mix of work ethic and skill, it fits the identity the Sabres are going forward with perfectly. A 3rd line with some combination of Barbashev/Girgensons/Larsson/Carrier would be a nightmare to defend against, relentless forechecking. In rookie camp, Lemieux had some issues with discipline, but thats to be expected from an 18 year old who plays a pest-style game and it can be toned down as he progresses. But still, it isnt exactly a positive either

But I won't try to derail the thread

I'll refer you to scoutman1. His offense is most definitely not limited.

His PPG pace in the Q would have put him in the top ten of league scoring had he played in 60 games with 85 points. The guy is a very good offensive player.

I cant wait to see how he does this upcoming year in Junior. Im surprised how many times I've read that fans say they wouldn't be surprised if he is in the NHL in 2015.

You and me both. When Barbashev was selected, I texted my buddy who's a Blues fan telling him the Blues won the draft.

I also had them top 10! Blues did well not unlike getting Tarasenko and Schwartz in one draft.

Why did Barbashev drop so much?... im sure the answer is all over the place on the internet but im too lazy to look up articles haha

Russian + questionnable offensive upside.

However in my opinion he has just as much upside as a guy like Larkin that I also like. Had Barbashev going between 10 and 15.

Could be one of the steals of this past draft???? Im impressed the Blues have already signed this kid too

Barbashev was my favorite prospect in the draft. Wanted the Flyers to take him at 17. Pretty happy with Sanheim though.

Barbashev won't be a 80+ point NHL but he's not limited offensively. I think he'll be a 50-60 point second liner with a strong physical presence and two-way game. Very reliable player that can play in all situations.

50-60 points is in the top 80-40 range among forwards these days. If you score in that range, especially if you have other positive qualities to your game (such as physicality and two-way play), you're absolutely a first liner. Semantics, absolutely, but that's a top-3 forward on not just most teams in the league, but most playoff teams, too.
