He is saying PV should have picked Fantilli instead of Leo.
But he’ll duck out any never speak of it again if he ends up being wrong, which happens often.

I find myself wondering if he wont be wrong on this one. Carlsson was a surprise pick for me because Fantilli seemed to be the perfect PV pick for the style he wants to play. North American, big, fast, physical, and skilled.
We will probably be debating this one for years lol.
I still think we should have picked Fantilli but it doesn't mean I'm not happy with Leo and behind him 100%. I think he's going to be a good one but always had more physical maturing to do than Fantilli. If Leo isn't lighting it up next year, we riot though!

Definitely will be a debate for years, I wanted Leo so I’m happy and also still think he ends up the more impactful player. But I definitely don’t think anyone should be running victory laps when they are 12 points apart throughout their young career. I am surprised Verbeek chose him though, definitely seemed like Fantilli was a PV style player
Carlsson-Sennecke vs Fantilli-Demidov will rightly be debated for years. Both were surprise picks at the very top of the draft. It’s not too much of an exaggeration to say that getting those picks right or wrong could mean the difference between a SC and mediocrity a few years down the road. I hope verbeek and madden were indeed the smartest guys in the room on both picks but the jury is still very much out.
I really didn't want to get into this debate. But it's not very fair to compare what Fantilli is doing now vs Leo. Based on ice time, coaching, the system, and line-mates. It's just not a fair comparison.
Just some quick and dirty math - I didn't factor anything else in, so dismiss this if you'd like, but the context for Fantilli and Carlsson matters. Perhaps you could argue that both players are part of the context and thus creating their own situations, and that's fair. But there's no doubt that Columbus is a better offensive team than Anaheim, whether because of coaching or surrounding players or whatever.
Fantilli is putting up 2.2 points per 60 minutes. Carlsson is putting up 1.8 points per 60 minutes (which is actually better than last year, since his minutes are down a bit per game this season).
Columbus has put up 27% more points than Anaheim this season. If you give Carlsson that boost by putting him in that environment, he goes up to 2.3 points per 60. I'm not going to use those figures to argue that Carlsson has been better than Fantilli this season, just to point out that Carlsson in Fantilli's environment would likely be producing more than he currently is.

Environment is definitely a huge part of it, physical maturity is the other piece of the puzzle.

I would have been happy with either Leo or Fantilli. Both seem like nice kids, too. Hard not to root for either of them.

the talent and potential is clearly there with leo. he just needs to learn how to finish and hopefully play with better linemates

Agreed. I think everyone here would've preferred Bedard and then you could then and still can make a strong argument for either Leo or Fantilli. Losing the lotto sucked, but i gotta admit that has waned a ton over the past 2 years seeing how Bedard has played.
