You have to think with his extra hockey issues that he really would have gone higher in the draft. Pretty amazing if we got a guy that would have been a top 10 pick plus a high end second round talent that most had in the first round.

Thanks for your encouragement. There were plenty of forwards at that point with real mixed bags of plusses and minuses, and Rubtsov was probably among the biggest mystery boxed with the Russian U18 issue.

I think he'd have gone top 15, maybe even top 10 if he was a Canadian/American kid playing in the CHL. Curious how much the doping scandal played a part in his draft position - it was the whole team, not just Rubtsov, so you'd think it wouldn't be seen too negatively. I'd imagine the standard "Russian factor" concerns were more prevalent. I do think "Russian factor" concerns are legit though, there are plenty of question marks inherent to a player coming from Russia that make you mark down their value in the draft:
  • Will you be able to convince him to play in the AHL before the NHL?
  • Will it be hard to get him at a good price on his RFA deal if he has the extra leverage to go back to Russia? Russian RFAs can be in a similar situation to North American UFAs, as they're not stuck with one team in the same way
  • Will you be able to get him to come over at all if he doesn't seem to be maturing into a star, but more of a mid level player? Stars generally come over, but for mid-level NHLers staying in Russia can be more attractive
  • A young Russian player has to adapt not just to a new league, but also to a new culture and language. Will this hurt their development?

From the little I've seen of him he seems to have an extremely well rounded game - strong hockey IQ, strong skater, nice hands, very good shot, and great commitment to defence. Definite stylistic similarities to Toews, though not quite as physical, and not as skilled. If he can learn to use his size/strength a bit more, I can see him turning into somewhat of a 2C version of Toews.

Prefer him to McLeod because I think he's got higher hockey IQ, even if he's not quite as quick - they're fairly similar prospects in a lot of ways. I see why McLeod went higher, I do think there's more risk with Russian prospects due to the points I listed above, but judging purely on ability, I prefer Rubtsov.

Source for that?

I would think KHL rinks are about the same size that we have in Finland, about 200ft long and 92 to 99 wide (58-60x28-30)

Not at all. Most rinks are standard european sized (60x30m), Hartwall Arena is obviously finnish-sized(inbetween NA and euro-size), Admiral and Medvescak have NA sized rinks off the top of my head.

Well basically the rinks seem to be about the same size than in Finland, or more olympic sized (Not NA type). Except for the Admiral and Medvescak. Because the lenght doesn't really make a difference, I think something like 60x26 is NA type rink because of the width.

Two rinks doesn't really make a difference getting used to the small rink, but I think Rubtsov's game will translate well to the NHL so no worries really.

Iirc, Lada and Torpedo also have Finnish sized rinks.

Vladivostok Admiral team's rink is NA sized.

No one in NA would know though because all the games are played in the middle of the night over here.

Does anyone know how long Rubtsov signed for? He probably should be NHL ready in about two seasons. If Philly wants to push it, maybe even one season.

I guess two years has been the talk all along. And Philly (Hextall) definitely won't rush him, but if he's super he's coming over immediately after the first season.

Sam Carchidi a Philly writer was critical of the pick - something about yet another "2-way forward" and lamenting that they passed on Bellows. He may wind up being right, and Bellows could have a better hockey career than Rubtsov when it's all said and done. But I'm with Hextall on this one. He has made some mistakes but has largely been very good at listening to the right advice and selecting the right players. Sam on the other hand is a good reporter. He reports what happens in an entertaining way, and covers the Flyers just fine but knows less about the game than the average 14 year old from the suburbs of Toronto.

Pre-draft, I was hoping for one of Kunin, Bellows or Rubstov. Glad Philly got one of them. Philly has wingers on the way in Konecny, Lindblom, and Aube-Kubel but have no top 6 C prospects.

They do now.

Then adding Laberge and Allison who have top 6 upside and adding the CHL goalie of the year, another great draft by Philly....at least on paper. A year from now, things can change.

But today, quite pleased with the draft and adding Rubstov and the gang.
