anyone followed this kid during his draft year? was he really a top 3 pick? he did have Connor as a linemate, but looking at it now in hindsight my gawd. a far cry from what you expect from a 3rd pick.

No there has been barely ANY talk about Strome and where he was drafted and if Arizona made a mistake and imagine if they had taken Marner/Hanifin/Werenski/Provorov/Barzal/Connor...

How do you have over 7,000 posts and ask that?

I wasn't following the 2015 draft as closely due to the fact the Canucks were not in position to draft high. Forgive me sir.

They were not linemates, only on th PP. He was floating a little too much for my liking. Lack of effort throw my off, I wouldn't have touched him with a top 10 pick. Connor had the tough matchup while he was centering a really strong second line with easier matchup. That being said, his shot is really good.

Think the exasperation is more about having 7k posts and not knowing that a guy ultimately drafted 3OA would have a close following than following any draft year in particular.

His shot has power and is accurate, but he's always had a slow release and an obvious load.

Strome also had like 8 weeks without McDavid, from when McDavid broke his hand until the end of the WJC. His numbers during that time were good, if I remember correctly somewhere in the 1.4 to 1.6 ppg range. So, a dropoff from when McDavid was playing but still quite high for a 17 year old draft eligible.

You have more things to worry about in life then someone on hfboards.com asking for simple feedback from fans that have watched a particular player during draft year.

McDavid effect was real. Burakovsky has turned out to be nothing special either. He will be traded or not qualified by the Caps.
There are some players from those Otter teams who are looking promising right now. Debrincat is looking good. The Leafs are pretty happy with Travis Dermott who was also on those Otter teams and is probably their long-term 2nd pairing LHD after this season.

Loved him at the World Juniors a few years ago, he seemed like a star in the making. Such a shame he has failed to pan out.

2016 WJ? I honestly thought that was the tournament that showed his lack of skating ability. He got a good amount of points but I remember most of them being on the PP and him not doing much on the even strength side of things.

According to most experts, yes. According to me, no. I had him #7 behind Marner, Provorov and Barzal and just ahead of Rantanen and Connor. In hindsight I should've placed him even lower considering I really didn't like him or his game much at all but I figured with how smart he is that he'd eventually figure it out and at least be a consistent 60 point center.

As of right now it's certainly not too late for that to happen. I've said it many times but I think Strome is a guy who will need a lot of time before finding his way and role in the NHL. So I think he'll eventually get there and at least be a 50-55 pt center, but obviously nothing like what most experts believed he'd be.

I think Derek Stepan is a good comparison in terms of the type of career I expect him to have. Very underwhelming in terms of being a 3rd overall pick in a deep draft, but still a fairly solid top6 NHL forward. I'm curious to see how he does in Chicago. Definitely feels like he could be put in a much better situation there than in Arizona and maybe finally realize some of that potential.

I know, the fact that he still produced (and more) without McDavid had me a little bit surprised. We can say he wasn't the product of McDavid but he was able to play with Debrincat on that 1st line when Connor was out. Nonetheless, he had the skills to be a dominant OHL player.

He’s at that point where he’s running out of runway.

100 % correct
he was overplayed and did not play well.

Agreed he flourished in one area of the game, the PP. Which is to be expected when you play on team Canada at the World Juniors. I was expecting to see a big center that would dominate all aspects of the play and it was far from the case.

It’s amazing how quickly some are to label a player a bust. We’re talking about a 21 year old kid, playing his 2nd season of pro hockey that torched the AHL last year and has 16 points in 48 NHL games, which would be 27 points ovee 82 games. It’s way too early to make a determination on him one way or the other, I think the trade was a good one for both teams but why is everyone so quick to turn on a 21 year old?

I think most Coyotes fans wanted to give Strome more time to grow physically and mentally and find his game at the NHL level. The problem was more that he was not a good fit for the Coyotes who need fast results to improve a weak product. The Coyotes want to push for a playoff spot in a weak Pacific division, even if it is counter productive in the long term. But that is Coyotes logic for you.

because he is playing poorly compared to guys drafted near him

i think he will find his way in the show but he is definitely showing poorly so far

Honestly if anything that tournament made me sour on the kid. It just highlight his lack of intelligence on the offence on top of his already known skater. I left that tournament thinking "Oof that was a rough one for the kid"

I've seen some AHL highlights of him and he looks pretty good. Someone mentioned his skating at the NHL level looks weak? Is that the issue or is it more of the lack of compete?

I think if he was a prospect 10 years ago id agree with you, but with the way hockey is going and the style of play I really dont see him being a player in this era.

Agreed especially on the PP when Chabot was walking the line and drawing everyone to him all tournament then dishing to Strome on his off wing on the half wall. He had all day to make a play or get his shot off but by the finals the US had figured out he takes so long to unload they cheated and took away that option.

Granted, my own level of scouting probably wasn't very good back then but he seemingly had all the skill in the world and combined it with a terrific compete level. What's not to like?
