Ill admit i was getting extremely nervous about how he would turn out just before he was dealt.

This trade has done wonders for him cause ive seen a few Yotes games live the past year and a half and ill even say i thought he looked awful. He looks like a brand new player.

So cool to see!

Just shows that some kids need a couple years of development.. I know alot of HFboards people dont realize that tho!!

Don't understand why Arizona refused to give him a good chance in their top 6.

Strome has also been killing it lately without Kane on his line.

I saw some games where he was in the top 6 and IMO he looked awful while in AZ. Couldnt keep up and just struggled alot. He just needed his buddy Debrincat!!

He looked pretty good tonight, solid trade for both teams but strome has the higher upside

Strome's been better but he's also been much luckier since joining Chicago.

In ARI this season:

20 GP, 3G, 6P, 40 S, 7.5 Sh%, 2.5 oiSh%, 93.6 PDO

Since joining CHI:

31 GP, 10G, 27P, 55 S, 18.2 Sh%, 13.7 oiSh%, 102.4 PDO

He averaged more shots per game while playing less minutes and with weaker linemates in Arizona. He also had a higher corsi in Arizona while getting (albeit slightly) less favourable zone starts.

Strome is certainly in a much better position to succeed now but I don't think he's quite as good as his 27 points in 31 games suggests.

I beg to differ.

He is actually better what those numbers suggests. - my opinion -

Not necessarily just development though. It's not like he suddenly developed after the trade and learned how to play hockey. In Strome's case the talent has always been there but he has some flaws in his game that made him an ineffective player in Arizona, whereas in Chicago he has the right type of environment to thrive. I'd bet his motivation went up quite a bit realizing he'd get to play with guys like DeBrincat and Kane as well in conjunction with the trade perhaps being a wakeup call for him.

Which is a major issue in the desert.

The player development has been trash for years. They have changed owners, coaches, GMS, directors of player development...

This might be a weird thought, but could it be a mental thing where players come into a small non-hockey market and feel zero expectations so there's no real reason to push themselves? Especially when the team itself is usually mediocre.

I think it’s likely, but only to a small extent. I imagine that the vast majority of players are driven predominantly by their own desire to succeed, the financial impact, pride, contractual duty, and so on.

I think a large part of it is lines mates. It's no secret that Strome struggles to play the game at a high pace, so line mates like Kane and Debrincat who gain the zone with speed then slow everything down bodes well for Strome who has great vision and hockey IQ but lacks in all other aspects of the game.

That isn't true. He's got a nice shot as well. His skating is always going to keep him as somewhat of a defensive liability, but his hockey sense, vision and hands are elite and his shot is above average, but not elite. If he could skate even at an above average level he'd be a star.

Fair, still think his hockey IQ and vision are well above any of his other hockey skills.

Picked third behind McDavid and Eichel in the 2015 draft but wore out his welcome with the Desert Dogs in just two seasons. How does this happen? Does anyone have patience with young draft picks anymore?

It’s not as if they just threw him away for futures, Schmaltz has a 50+ point season under his belt and is nearly PPG for Arizona so far.

It happens, in this case there was a change at GM/coach in 2016/17. We'll never know if perhaps Chayka was a dissenting voice at the draft table when Don Maloney was GM and they took Strome.

The team was very patient with Strome (2 OHL seasons post draft and 1 AHL season) and then suddenly the patience was gone after a dozen games this season. I think Andrew Barroway NEEDS to sell the team this season and WANTS to sell a playoff team. He gets richer and gets some credit for turning the franchise around. Schmaltz should have been more ready for a playoff push than Strome.

27 points in 31 games since being traded.
I am very happy for him. He was in the unenviable position of being drafted right behind Eichel and McDavid as well as being drafted right in front of Marner. Let's face it, Strome got off to a slow start compared to many others in his draft class. It's great to see him start to live up to his draft position.

This does suck for Arizona to have Dylan Strome excel AFTER he gets traded to another team. There is no guarantee that Strome would have played this well had he stayed in Arizona. Nevertheless, it does look like Arizona gave up on him too soon, at least on the surface.
