As a prospect, how does he compare to Toews?

- Impressive freshman year in the NCAA (47p in 35gp vs 46p in 34gp as a sophomore for Toews)
- Solid performances in his first WJC (7p in 5gp vs 7p in 6gp for Toews 2nd WJC)
- Strong showing in defensive role in men's WC.
Extremely impressive in AHL playoffs (5p in 6gp)
- Strong showing in pre-season.

All things considered, they seem fairly comparable offensively, and Larkin is obviously a top notch all around player as well. If we were to compare them as 18/19 year olds, I'd say they are pretty close.

It is certainly hyperbole to call him a future franchise center. Although saying he has the potential to be is not too far off.

The fact that he made the roster is huge, and shows that at least for now, most of the hype is warranted.

Let's keep in mind that if Babcock was still coaching this team he probably wouldn't have been included. That is speculation but I'm sure some would agree with me. Especially after knowing Blashill was a huge supporter of including Larkin in the opening roster behind the scenes.

Giggity giggity. Can't believe a 19 year old made the Wings opening night roster. Unheard of. Granted, they haven't had a prospect as good as Larkin in years.

I've said all along that Ken Holland was willing to bring prospects up at young ages if A) they were good enough already and B) they were going to play a significant role on the team. Every prospect is different. Ken isn't a dummy and realizes that too.

could just be the coaching change doesnt the coach pick the team. you act as if hes an underager.

"I'd say his play had to be such that he grabbed the job," Blashill said. "I think if he didn't grab the job the easier thing to do would be to put him in GR and see where we're at and see how his play goes. But we just felt, I specifically felt, that he makes us better. And to an exponential amount that we felt it was that important that he started on the team.

Sounds like Blashill really pushed to have him on the team.

The coaching staff and GM make the decision collectively with the GM obviously having the final say.

He's the first teenager to make the Red Wings in 15 years....this is a pretty big deal.

Blash needs Larkin to succeed because he will be pivot to blashill 's success here. To build a good team you need a good core. Babcock had Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Blash thinks Larkin is his guy. We will need other pieces of course, but having a 1C to build around is probably the most important thing.

Should Dylan Larkin play Friday, he'll be the first #RedWings teenager in 25 years (Mike Sillinger) to make his NHL debut on opening night.

First guy that young on the wings in a long time, not to mention starting on the top line. I dont think a lot of prospects do that for any team unless drafted top 3 or so but for the wings this is unheard of

Sounds like a mistake to rush him and throw him into a situation like that.

Top of my head teams that would drafted Larkin instead if they redrafted today:

Florida: No
Buffalo: Maybe
Oilers: Maybe
Calgary: Maybe
Islanders: Yes
Canucks: Yes
Canes: Yes
Leafs: Yes
Jets: Yes
Ducks: Yes
Preds: Yes
Arizona: Yes
Caps: Yes

So some GM´s maybe regret they didn´t pick Larkin, but not all...

Fixed that for ya.

He's shown he's ready for the NHL. He's smart and mature beyond his years, good size to handle rigors of NHL. He makes the team better. What's the mistake?

Nope. I would easily still keep Nylander. Leafs choices on draft day in order were Nylander, Ehlers and then Larkin.

Nylander has done nothing but impress so far after his draft. It's not a sprint, it's a marathon. Larkin can make the NHL this year, but his impact is anyone's guess.

I thought Jiri Fischer was the last. No?

I remember the hype about him being a young defenceman and making the team on a stacked roster

Exactly! If he struggles they can send him down to the AHL. They have a lot more flexibility because he hasn't played in the CHL. Heck, if he struggles in the AHL, they could send him to the CHL.

Did he make it out of camp for opening day? I don't know.

Given his maturation, rounded game and work ethic, Dylan Larkin is as suited as ANYONE for the Marathon

Excactly. Their drafting from first round (outside of maybe the last three years, and everyone of those guys are still magic beans) has been nothing spectacular from 2001. And you rarely get close to NHL-ready players after the first round.

Prospects making the team and having an impact +1 year from their draft is nothing out of ordinary. There are plenty of players who would have made an impact in Detroit's team and who were +1 year from their draft and who haven't been top-picks. From 2011 Couturier, from 2012 Hertl, Girgensons, from 2013 Horvat, Nichushkin, Lazar, Wennberg and Burakovsky. Those were just on the top of my head. None of them hardly is described as "franchise" and Larkin really isn't (yet) anything more special than any of them.

All this being said, Larkin is a very good prospect. At this point he seems like a guy who should have been taken earlier in the draft, but things might change. In many ways he reminds me a lot about Girgensons (after about 2 years after the draft he seemed better pick than F.Forsberg. Not sure anymore :) ), who almost every Sabres fan and the management loves. They have similar strenghts and weaknesses as well.

But this talk about being a franchise guy that Buffalo would maybe now take instead of Reinhart is just getting really silly (and it really is a disfavor for Larkin himself, to be honest). I understand the excitement of having a surprisingly NHL-ready prospect in a long, long time. But it really isn't anything THAT special, when you have a little wider perspective league wise.

***

And there really isn't anything to lose in giving him a spot at this moment. You have players (at least D) on IR and the worst casualty would be putting a stud like Cleary or Andersson to pressbox/waivers. If Larkin seems like needing some time in AHL, you can easily put him there anytime you want.

To put him on the top line instead of giving him sheltered minutes to get accustomed to the NHL
