there is no chance he wins the rookie scoring race. He was only at 12 points in 13 games before injury.. its not like he had taken the league by MAJOR storm and was putting up insane points. IMO even if he played all year, it would be neck and neck with Panarin still.. him and Kane are a DEADLY duo. Who cares though cause in a few years he will be the NHL leading scorer!!!

So basically in a nut shell let these other guys in his rookie class win awards/all rookie team awards etc cause it may be the last time they win some awards with a healthy McDavid playing now!!

if he is within 5 -8 points of pannarin
the calder is his

He would need a significantly higher PPG than Patrick Kane to close out the season.

Panarin is on pace for around 71 points. So let's say to get within 8 points of him, McDavid would need 63 points. He only has 12 on the season, and his team has 32 games left to play. If he returned tomorrow, he'd need to score at 1.6 PPG (51/32), which hasn't been done in years, to get even within 8 points of Panarin.

That said I can't wait to watch him play again.

I don't think Panarin gets 71 points, prob 65 points

I wouldn't put 1.5 PPG out of the realm of possibility. He was at a PPG after a slow start. People seem to forget that Pouliot-McDavid-Yakupov was the hottest line in the NHL until he got injured.

He is much like Crosby in that he will succeed with any linemates.

1.5 PPG is prime Sidney Crosby pacing.

I'm digging the enthusiasm, but let's not get crazy.

Who cares about the Calder. I just wanna see him play again. It's been a miserable season.

Not saying he'll score enough to catch up for the Calder, but I'm also not sure 1.5ppg is impossible for him. Everyone who's going crazy at people for saying that you need to remember it would be over 32 games, not an entire season. We'll see how long it takes him to get back in the groove, but if you take out his first 3 games where he was still adapting (and still creating so much) he had 12 points in 10 games, and that doesn't include the goal that should have counted against LA, and the assist he lost due to a terrible goalie interference coaches challenge. So realistically he should have had 14 points in those 10 games (and he didnt even play most of the last game when he got injured).

You're seeing it now with Eichel that after playing his first 30 or so games he's starting to click. We saw that in McDavid after 3 games, so it makes you wonder what he'd look like when he really figures it out. He's already been robbed on 3 or 4 chances all alone because he didn't get the puck upstairs (he'll learn what he needs to do to finish; See Hiller, Dubnyk, Elliot saves for reference).

Now don't take this as me saying he's going to put up 48 points over the last 32, but the sky is the limit with this kid and I'm excited to see what he can do when he really figures it all out. He was already making top pairing d pairs look silly on a nightly basis.

Not to mention the 2 gifts he gave letestu looking at a yawning net but decided to just miss the net instead

McDavid had a pretty good PPG after his first game but I forgot what it was, there was a stat for it. He was 1.2 PPG once he got first point until he got injured.

You think Panarin only scores 19 points in his last 29 games? That's a 54 point pace . . . he just put up 46 in 53 games. . . that would be a pretty big drop off.

Personally, I would bet that Panarin could forego the rest of the season and McDavid still probably won't catch him. He'll need 35 points in his last 32 games (after coming back from injury) to beat Panarin's current total.

Wow, some people here need to calm down. There is no way he gets the calder, that is done and over with.

They would not give it to someone who only played half the season no matter how good he was pretty much.

I mean, if he comes in and goes like 1.6 ppg or something crazy he definitely has a shot.

Definitely didn't miss a beat on that extended first shift, looked dangerous .. drew a penalty and then like 90 seconds of PP time.

He's been dangerous almost every shift. Definitely hasn't been slowed down by the extended break.

McDavid single-handedly making our PP look like an actual power play.

Honestly the whole teams goal should be to get him the puck when he's on the ice. Every time he gets to carry it through the neutral zone he opens up so much space its ridiculous. I will be extremely surprised if he's not the best player in the league in the next few years. His hockey IQ, hands, and skating are already among the very elite in the NHL. When he gets stronger and improves his shot velocity he's going to be insane.
