I'm pretty sure the only reason Matthews isn't getting hyped as much as a guy like Eichel is the fact he's playing in Europe.

hes better than eichel

Eichel - 96/10/28
Matthews - 97/09/17

almost a full year difference in the two.

Matthews:
GP G A P
14 10 6 16 (NLA) 1.14 PPG
Eichel:
40 26 45 71 (NCAA) 1.78 PPG

(Matthews obliterated Eichel in US U-18 scoring in Draft -1 year)

Depending on what you find more impressive I guess.

(I'm on the Matthews hype train right now)

Eichel piggybacked off of McDavid's hype more than any other prospect in history. Being labelled a generational talent, people on here were saying it was ridiculous to believe Eichel would never be as good as Tavares, a 2 time Hart nominee.

Matthews is IMO the better prospect between he and Eichel. Still a level below McDavid but he has superstar written all over him.

That's probably part of it. It's hard to pump up a guy when there's a dearth of direct comparables (hyping someone who puts up the best rookie NCAA season since Kariya is pretty easy to do).

Based on statistics, then yes. Pretty much in every single comparable team he has been better. Different US teams that is. Beat Kane's old record. Keep in mind he is one year younger so you have to back track the statistics one year.

I think it was a good idea to play in Europe. The hype probably was a bit much for Eichel so to be able to avoid that kind of pressure is good.

You got last year draft hype hangover + season in Europe so he can surprise the league next season. I guess a good WJC would increase the hype.

When will he be back by the way? Heard this weekend but he wasn't in the last game..

Edit: I'll answer my own question. Within 5-7 days it was said Nov 18.

Matthews had better stats than Eichel in their draft -1 seasons playing on the same team just at different times. Both have late birthdays so you can compare the two in that sense.

Just look at Eichel's 2013-2014 season compared to Matthews 2014-2015 season. Each of those seasons took place for each of them at the same age.

Imagine if the Oilers got this guy too. It could happen.

And...

Last but not least.
Anybody but the Leafs... They already have the best prospects ever.

I wonder if they would trade the pick, or clear out all of the previous first rounders and try and build the team off the youngsters/Current prospects (Mcdavid,Matthews,Nurse,Draisitil,Klefbom,Yakupov), then ship out Hall,Eberle,RNH. Definitely a possible and some intresting stuff.

Thank you for heaping even more attention upon the Leafs.

And no, not the "best ever", but they have certainly graciously added two of the better ones to the NHL's prospect cache, recently.

Did I just split an infinitive, end a sentence with a preposition?

Please forgive me.

;)

The shiny new toy cycle continues. Next year people on here will be arguing how Nolan Patrick is better than Matthews. Matthews looks like he will be very good. He will be drafted 1st and at some point next year will struggle a bit and people will jump off the ship and onto the next young prospect's ship that will be up for the 2017 draft.

You cant spin your way out of the fact many consider Matthews to be equal or better than Eichel.

Its not some personal insult to Eichel. He is what he is regardless of whom he is compared to.

There's a good chance Patrick will be better so they'd have a legit reason to be doing it.
