Not that it makes things much better but he does say that Buff and Ladd would be re-signed and then traded.

There's no logic though. Like somebody said, a fanboy's dream and nothing more. Why on earth would Winnipeg, after finally building a competitive team, trade 2 of the biggest pieces and basically reset their progress just to add Matthews?

Finally if it was that easy to add a 1st overall pick ("2 good players and some picks, done!")...how come nobody did it for Tavares, Stamkos, Hall, MacKinnon, Yakupov, Ekblad, McDavid, etc?

there were rumors every year but I think they were also a fanboy's dream and nothing more.

Could return to the lineup on Sunday

http://www.nhl.com/ice/blogpost.htm?id=42748&navid=nhl:topheads

Auston Matthews, the projected No. 1 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, will remain out of the lineup for the Zurich Lions on Thursday as he continues his recovery from an upper-body injury sustained in a game last month.

The news was confirmed for NHL.com by CAA Sports Agency, Matthews' representatives. CAA said Matthews continues to be evaluated and monitored each day and is doing well and in good spirits. He remains day-to-day.

Matthews, an A-rated prospect on NHL Central Scouting's September players to watch list, has 10 goals, 16 points and 46 shots on goal in 14 games this season.

The 18-year-old forward sustained his injury Oct. 23 during a 3-1 loss against Fribourg-Gotteron when he fell hard into the boards and missed his next two shifts but did return to the game. Matthews had an assist and one shot on goal in Zurich's next game two days later, a 6-3 victory against SCL.

He sat out a 5-3 victory against the Kloten Flyers on Oct. 30, which was Zurich's last game prior to an 11-day league break.

Matthews will miss his second straight game on Thursday when Zurich plays against Geneve-Servette HC. There is a possibility he could return to the lineup on Sunday against EV Zug.

I really think that Austin Matthews will end up a Leaf next summer. They obviously suck worse than ever this year, and while getting that 1st overall pick is no lock on any given year, they should have the best chance at it by far.

The Leafs will FINALLY have some seriously ELITE talent coming up, in Matthews, Rielly, Marner and Nylander, and can look forward to putting their stupidity and demons behind them, and go on to compete for some cups.

They will be the next Canadian team to win the cup, too. Book it.

Tanks for listening.

The 30th team in the league will have a 20% chance of drafting first. The 29th team will have a 13.5% chance of drafting first. What this means is that even if The Leafs finished in 30th place, they would have an 80% chance of not winning the lottery, and their odds wouldn't be much better than the next worst team's.

All this is to say, you're wrong.

You just supported my comment. Thanks!

Well not really, the Leafs should aim to finish 2nd to 30th (at the same time) to get an 80% chance at Mattews.

Finishing 30th and having the highest individual chance of winning it stupid because 2nd-30th has a higher chance of getting first.

:sarcasm:

Also the difference between 13.5 and 20 is huge. Especially considering you still have to slice the remaining 66.5% 28 ways.

Which is why the lottery is stupid. If the Leafs finish last they should get Matthews. Too bad for them that the rules changed because other greedy teams wanted a top 3 pick without paying the price.

I think 99% of HF takes McDavid over Matthews if he was available this year. But what does this add to the discussion?

Im implying he would go first in the last 5 years, besides the 2015 draft

That "Austin Matthews will end up a Leaf next summer" because the Leafs will be the worst team in the league and thus have a 20% chance of getting first pick? I don't think so.

While a 13.5% chance is significantly lower than a 20% chance, calling the latter "better" "by far" when they're both quite small is a bit disingenuous.

Which is why the lottery is good. If the Leafs tank to finish last they should not get Matthews. Too bad for them that the rules changed because other greedy teams tanked several years in a row to build an elite core without having to be intelligent hockey move wise.

Matthews is back on the ice, however he will not play against Davos today.

Is there a time table for his return? I imagine he will have to be loaned out to the US WJC by early December, so he'll probably only get a handful more games in until the new year.

It's pretty impressive that he's missed 37% of the season and is still among the league leaders in goals (t-2nd).

He seems way under hyped for a likely 1st overall pick, maybe due to the crazy amount of hype McDavid and Eichel got last year, and the fact that he's playing overseas.

It's probably just a bit of hype hangover from last draft, especially seeing how McJesus still hasn't broken Gretzky's career point record. Maybe there wasn't enough hype?
