So where is he projected between him Eichel and Mcdavid?
3rd. The 1-2-3 would be very clear.

For some time? The guy drafted right after is near him. We waited roughly five minutes.
Likely would have gone 3rd overall this year due to how ridic Eichel's NCAA year was. If you take out Eichel's NCAA year and just look at their draft -1 years (where they played in the same league/team), its closer.

As an aside, how many half Mexicans played in the NHL? Is it safe to say Matthews will be the best ever?
EDIT: apparently his only competition is Gomez
Did anyone catch ZSC's champions league game? If so, how did Matthews look?
As far as I know he wasn't in the lineup due to his not being able to play until he's 18.
can't be that reason. patrick laine played CHL yesterday and he is 17.
His legal permission to play/work in Switzerland is contingent on him not playing until he is 18 years of age. Different situations.
Matthews will be debuting for the Zurich Lions on the 18th of September.
Hes not able to play until hes 18 due to some legal issues between the US and Switzerland.
Zurichs gonna Rip it with those kids...

Everyone who keeps ranking Matthews @ 1st overall after the ongoing Lake Placid U20 camp are just sheep following the consensus. Laine and Puljujärvi are better players and better prospects than him, it's obvious.

Chychrun has a glass shoulder, I doubt any sensible GM would pick him before Matthews or Laine.Just wait.......Chychrun will overtake them all, to be the consensus #1 choice.
Maybe difficult to say considering he's still a kid, but how does Matthews compare to Nolan Patrick? Who is the better talent?

Wouldnt be surprised at all to see him go before Laine, Matthews too if he's fully healthy all year.
They're quite close in terms of talent, but Matthews is probably a bit better. Patrick is a great player and IMO the frontrunner for 1st overall pick in 2017, but Matthews and Eichel, at this moment in time, are the best American forward prospects since Mike Modano.
Patrick looks like a decent, if average, potential 1st overall pick, like a Ryan Nugent-Hopkins or a Sam Reinhart. Matthews looks like an excellent potential 1st overall pick like a MacKinnon or a Tavares.
That being said, if Patrick becomes a two-way threat and puts up 100+ points in the WHL this year, he'll have decreased the gap tremendously. If he breaks 120, combined with the two-way play, then it'd be hard not to say they're close to equal.
Patrick in his draft-2 season was less impressive (though still quite impressive in the context of his age and role) than Matthews was in his draft-2 season.

The US team had such a strong flow in their game at the U18WC's that it made it easy for Matthews to showcase his talent against mostly B-class opponents. Take a look at his play at U20 level, both at World Juniors and at Lake Placid and you'll get a different picture.
Not true, based on his play at U20 level he's not better or more promising than Laine or Puljujärvi.
I'd think Buffalo would trade down if they didn't feel Chychrun is the best player or pick the best player (if that's Matthews) and trade him for a top defender if #2 does not want to trade up.Also depends on who's drafting where. If Buffalo has the first pick then we're taking Chrychrun for sure.

I'm sure a team like Arizona would consider Ekman Larsson for Matthews.

Fair enough. Imo it would be poor asset management to not pick BPA if they feel there is a gap between the top forward and top defender. Either trade down or take the BPA and fill your needs through a trade. Not to derail this thread, but at this point there's no reason to think that Chychrun won't be the best defenseman available. Given Buffalo's current forward and defenseman situation, they'd be stupid to take Matthews over Chychrun. Not downplaying Matthews one bit, but given how good Chychrun potentially projects to be, (franchise level defenseman) it just seems like it'd be a bonehead move not to take him.
