They got it right, it would have been a joke had he not won it, he was the best player in the country from wire to wire.
Cooley, Snuggerud, Knies & Fantilli were all neck and neck for B10 scoring, but Fantilli’s out of conference numbers rightfully won him the Hobey. I do think Cooley was a better player by the end of the year though

It is paywalled, but this article on The Athletic about Adam is pretty great. The players that Adam was compared to by his previous GMs are Mark Messier and Eric Lindros. Not bad.
'But Adam, already all of 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds at the time, also knew that because of his late birthday, he’d have to spend three full years in the OHL before even being eligible for the NHL Draft. Had he gained exceptional status into the league, that would’ve been four, something his advisors felt might do more harm than good for his development.'

Pretty interesting. With Covid happening, the path he took ended up being undeniably the right decision.

No, that's bad and completely inaccurate. Who wrote that article-Wayne Gretzky?

Here are the relevant quotes:

Adam once asked D’Ammizio what NHL player he compared to and when D’Ammizio answered Mark Messier, he clapped back, “You don’t think I’m very good” because he was unfamiliar with the name.

D’Ammizio laughs when he tells that story, recalling having to explain who Messier was. He saw Messier in how strong Adam always was for his age, in his infectious by-example leadership skills, and in his “undeniable determination.”

Asked what “that type of hockey player” is, Catenaro goes to a different legend than the one D’Ammizio does.

“I’d describe him as like an Eric Lindros but maybe even better skilled, and that’s no knock on Eric Lindros, but his skill level is off the charts and he does it at high speed, and he battles. I know the game has changed today and us coaches are getting a little older but we all still really admire a guy that has the ability to score three goals but also does so much more,” he said.

“Like he would knock guys on their ass that were almost two years older than him. He just played like a tank. I can’t say enough about the kid. I think he’s going to be a phenomenal NHLer. I really do.”

I read some tweets on Twitter speculating that Fantilli might return for his sophomore season next year. He's obviously not making or announcing a decision until after the draft but I'd still be surprised if he returns to Michigan next year.

If Adam waits then he’s not eligible for the draft.

Uhhh...sure he is....players get drafted from NCAA/or drafted players go to NCAA and it does not impact their eligibility. Only when they sign a pro deal do they need to leave the NCAA and their team.
Would that affect his draft position? Maybe some teams might wonder if he’s going to play out his four years to pick his club so they pass on him? It’s not like he’s a better pick than Leo Carlsson.

Nope. He's about as locked in at #2 as Bedard is locked in at #1. Could be my biased opinion but feel like 99/100 people agree with that as well. if he returns to school for his sophomore season or turns pro he's going to be picked #2.

No he’s going #2 or #3, he can still play college hockey as long as he doesn’t sign an ELC. If he does it’s NHL or AHL (OHL is an option but he’s better served playing pro, North Bay owns his rights)

IDK, Carlsson really came on strong down the stretch and into the playoffs. I think there are more than a few teams that have him at 2.

I'd be in favour of Fantilli playing another year in college.

I really don't get the obsession of having players step in the league immediately. I'm sure Fantilli will be fine if he jumps straight to the NHL, but why not wait the extra year and have him come in as the definitive Calder favourite?

I think it's better for long term development and confidence. No need to rush.

Agreed. I'm always in favor of more development vs rushing the player. However, most likely might be based on who drafts him. I feel Chicago, San Jose and Montreal like teams that like the more development route where a team like Columbus typically is seen as one that will play players younger.

Based on the Logan Mailloux situation, I get the impression that players don't actually have to "declare" or submit eligibility paperwork in order to be selected in the Draft. Maybe someone else can clarify, but it seems like any hockey player that's 18 years old by September 15th of their draft year is eligible to be taken.
