Yes and Laine and Fantilli can play center together, or possibly one will be moved to wing, or possibly one will center the second line, lots of possible permutations. So far none of the units have played more than one game together so we don't know the final combinations yet. Maybe leave this one to the hardcore Jackets fans.

Dude, are you still not giving up?

Laine played center in the last two pre-season games with Marchenko on the wing.

(Gaudreau was rested)

Marchenko-Laine-Gaudreau line is set. For the last week they have been training together.

You wouldn't know.

Am I the first to just say it that Laine as C is gonna be a disaster?

If it would be you think he’s going to play there long?

As Vincent said there’s nothing to lose, either he makes it at C or learns about different position and goes back to W

Why? He's a big guy who skates smoothly with great hands and vision. He's also incredibly strong on pucks.

When he was a prospect, I saw a lot of Malkin in his game, and always wondered why he wasn't tried at center. I also like the idea of a guy with Laine's shot being the late man on zone entries, especially if he's played with Gaudreau, who is excellent at pulling up and finding trailing teammates.

There's nothing to suggest that in the 4 games he has played C (2 last season and 2 this preseason), if anything he's been way better than you'd expect from someone who has never played C before. Obviously face offs and getting adjusted to D-zone center duties are gonna take time, not worried at all about the offensive side of things.

It's not like they have to play him at C, if it at some point starts to look like a disaster, they'll just move him back to wing and he should be a better player for the experience. If he plays well enough to be a legit top-6 option, then it gives them flexibility with development of Fantilli/Johnson and if nothing else, they have one more guy who can fill in when a center eventually gets injured.

Also they seem to get along pretty well with Fantilli both on and off the ice, if there's real on-ice chemistry there, a Fantilli/Laine duo could be a pain to deal with and if they're both capable of playing center, that would add an extra element.

You're obviously much more informed on the Blue Jackets than Jackets fans, so I'll defer to you on that. But your original pithy little point was that he'd be third line, and he will absolutely 100% not be that. Even using your supporting points to argue with us, he's been second line throughout the preseason for all that that matters (which isn't much since only one preseason has featured all three of Fantilli, Laine, and Jenner, and that was a split squad against Pittsburgh where most of the rest of the roster has already been cut from camp, and Laine played wing).

Some guys here dedicate their whole lives to being a troll. So this is my last post on this topic, and for me the discussion is closed.

If you watch the Blue Jackets or follow any of the beat writers (like https://twitter.com/JacketsInsider - https://twitter.com/Aportzline - https://twitter.com/BrianHedger ) you'll see the line combinations at practices and preseason games. At the moment the situation is quite clear: Laine 1st line C, Jenner 2nd line C, Fantilli 3rd line C

Just like they will play in today's preseason game

Deal with it.

I don't see how someone can say Laine at center will or won't work at this point. We have a few pre-season games and a few experiments that didn't last long. He needs to be given a solid run and see the results.

No but he’s looked pretty solid in limited showings IMO. Moving to C was a big part of Tage Thompson being able to score more. It may actually compliment Laine’s game and keep him more involved on D. IMO, worth a shot.
