Probably 1, maybe 2 games. Deserved, tbh. All Bunting needs to do is not elbow people in the face, it ain‘t rocket science.

Just a boneheaded play from Bunting. He got all of Cernak’s head. He’ll get a deserved suspension.
Anyone who says this DID NOT watch all the angles on that play.

From the rear camera view from up the ice you can clearly see Cernak MOVING TOWARDS Bunting from the side/rear and NOT the other way around meaning it wasn't Bunting looking to make contact. Cernak is 6'4 while Bunting is listed at 6'0 so the only way Bunting's shoulder could make contact with Cernak's head is if he was leaning down which is exactly what happened. In my view it looked to me Cernak was skating towards Bunting to get his body on him and tie him up and he was leaning down while doing so and unfortunately got clipped in the head.

I get that people think he's a Marchand like rat these days and many people dislike him, but for this particular incident it wasn't his fault. Ask yourself if you were in Bunting's exact same position in that incident WHAT WOULD YOU DO DIFFERENTLY that could've allowed you to avoid clipping Cernak in the head? I'd really like to hear it.

Bunting out, Knies in and watch the Leafs go on a run. Crazier things could happen.

Marchand's rattiness helps his team win games. That's the difference. Maybe try the Avery suit on for size?

Ah well, Punting will be Columbus' or Anaheim's problem next season.
What a moron, might have cost Leafs the series, as they looked to be on the comeback trail before dum-dum had his look at me and my lack of discipline moment.

The puck is running around the boards which is where Cernak is going.

He's not moving towards Bunting, he's moving to where the puck is going to end up.

Instead of moving towards the puck himself, Bunting launches himself in the opposite direction at Cernak's head, the same Cernak that threw a late hit on Bunting earlier in the game after the whistle, earning a penalty for his efforts.

It's pretty cut and dried.

I would think he is suspended for the rest of the season which means the 1st round. They are going to make an example out of him with his reputation.

Cernak blindly turned towards his right after the face off and into Bunting who wasn't going towards his direction and he was leaning down. Again I ask if you were in Bunting's position what would you do differently that could've avoided a collision and not clipping Cernak when the other player is running into you leaning down?

I probably wouldn't have lunged upwards and away from the play with my elbow.

It's interference at best and a hit to the head at worst and it was completely avoidable and unnecessary, particularly given the game situation and the fact that they already had a beef earlier in the game.

classic leafs. i love how the blame for this is wes mccauleys relationship with keefe, not the dirty leafs

Dumba hit was clean. This was dirty. And idiotic to boot. Really thought the Leafs were gonna make a run this yr but that couldn’t have been a worse Game 1 for them.

'Lunging upwards' is a natural human reaction to bracing yourself for a collision. You can test it out yourself in your own home. Walk in a straight line and pretend someone is coming up towards you to your side and is about to collide with you and then they actually do 'collide' with you and ask yourself what's your automatic reaction? It isn't to lower your shoulder to the collision, its to tense up and bring your shoulder up defensively bracing for the impact as best you can.

When someone is about to hit you you don't lower your shoulder to expose your neck and head to the collusion and possible injury, you automatically do the opposite so that your shoulder takes the brunt of the hit.

The natural reaction isn't to throw yourself into the direction of the collision.

I just tested it and I tense up away from the contact, not towards.

Nice try though, A for effort.

I have to admit, I was not expecting the "poor Bunting is an unfortunate victim of Cernak's aggression" defence today.

The fact that he bitches to the ref the entire time is just the icing on the cake, what a tool

Indeed. Marchand is a very skilled rat, he was instrumental in the 2011 Cup run by getting under Vancouver's skin. I still remember game 6 of the Finals watching him speedbag Daniel Sedin, not hard enough to do damage, just hard enough to say "I really don't give a toot about your personal space." And Daniel just standing there and taking it hoping to draw a penalty which didn't come.

You tense up away from the collision, but your shoulder goes UP and NOT DOWN. That's my point for people thinking Bunting was throwing his shoulder up into Cernak's head. Again if you watch the rear camera view where you see the hit head on from behind, you can clearly see Cernak TURNING INTO Bunting and not the opposite.

Cernak turns into Bunting and collides with him and Bunting braces for impact by tensing up and his shoulder naturally goes up defensively to protect himself. Cernak is leaning down during the collision and it becomes shoulder to head. If Cernak is upright in that position then it becomes shoulder to body.

I agree that Bunting doesn't necessarily hit Cernak in the head if Cernak is standing at his full height.

But he wasn't, and it did hit him in the head, and he left the game, and the puck was nowhere around.

I also believe that Bunting knew he was coming, and thought to throw a little reverse-hit his way in retaliation for what happened earlier in the game, only he caught him in the wrong place and put his team down a man for 5 minutes.

Cernak was clearly following the play, watching the puck and moving towards its destination, and was blind-sided.
