If he chooses NYR, he'll start out no higher than the 3rd line. Nash isn't going anywhere just because Vesey signs. It would take an offer of a reasonable return, which Gorton hasn't received yet, to deal Nash.

It's true. For all we know, Gorton hasn't received a reasonable offer for Nash...yet.

After the surprise Brassard trade, who knows what Gorton will do. Nobody was speculating about that, but it happened.

Maybe Gorton has a deal for Nash ready to go, and is just waiting to pull the trigger, and no information is leaking.

Who knows though. It's all speculation. :dunno:

We'll see in about a week.

What time on the 15th does Vesey officially become a FA? Noon ET?

CBA actually says the team with his draft rights (Buffalo) has exclusive negotiating with him "through and including August 15th".

So he won't be a free agent until August 16th at midnight.

Last season they were out when? And this season they are strictly worse.

Last season the Hawks d-corps were not in good shape with 2 rookies playing most of the time and often with TvR playing his off side (he's RD).

2015/16:
Keith-Hjalmarsson
Svedberg-Seabrook
TvR-Rozsival

2016/17:
Keith-Hjalmarsson
Campbell-Seabrook
Kempny-TvR

D-corps is much improved

“We’ve looked at depth charts with some teams and talked about them. . . . “There’s obviously a lot of thought that goes into it: The city, the coach, the GM, the salary structure, how a team treats their players in the second and third contracts down the road.”

That last sentence can be worrisome for Chicago.

From the article Vesey wrote, it's also clear that family is important to him. both his own and belonging to an organization that is like family. I wouldn't consider myself well informed on how the owners of the Bruins, Blackhawks, Rangers, Leafs, or Devils treat their people and players. I do know that the Sabres owner, Terry Pegula, treats his people like gold and goes way out of his way to treat them special. Private jets for players going to tournaments, facility upgrades, trading expiring UFAs to contenders, paying family expenses for trips, etc.

It played into Okposo signing in Buffalo. It probably bears some weight in the Vesey situation.

NJ isn't a city so I'm fairly confused here.

You do also realize that NYC is about 10-15 miles from Newark. If someone wants to live in NYC that badly, they easily can.

I always forget that NHL rule requiring that players on a team live in the city they play.

Most of the young single players live in Hoboken.. Henrique for example. It's a pretty nice area and a stone's throw from both NYC and Newark. NJ also has some of the most upscale family neighborhoods in the country in Alpine and New Vernon.

These Newark posts are laughable. This is like saying that the Yankees can't sign a player because their stadium sits in the Bronx. Meanwhile, exactly ZERO players live in the Bronx - as they are spread out in Connecticut, Manhattan annnnnnnd - North Jersey! From Bergen county (Tino Martinez, Don Mattingly etc) to the Edgewater stretch of waterfront facing NYC (Large mahority of team - notable in recent years including Cano, Chamberlain etc) and as you said Hoboken which is right there and one of the most popular places in America for affluent YOUNG professionals.

Further, the Devils facility IN Newark is one of, if not the best setup for players in the NHL. They are, I believe the only team in the league with their entire operation under one roof, with their offices, practice facility and game arena all at Prudential Center. No commuting, having different lockers etc. This ranges from mild annoyance for the Rangers to severe player deterrants in Brooklyn, where the commute between the teams facility (and most players residence) and game arena is a nightmare.

And its within 20 minutes of Manhattan, Hoboken and as stated incredible suburbs and school districts.

Further, the Devils offer a relatively PEACEFUL existence (if that's what you're looking for - not every player is). Brodeur, Stevens, Elias, Cammalieri and even Doug Gilmour I recall commenting on this. The Devils have always fostered a very professional and winning environment without the hassle of the big-market frenzy that some players dread. I'm sure an attention seeker like "King" Henrik would not want this but many would be attracted to 1 (if we're lucky) beat writer and the ability to go to the mall with your family and be - relatively - left in peace.

I still think Vesey will sign with his home town Bruins regardless what the rumor mill is spitting out lately. But let's look at where Vesey would fit into the top-6 with the teams of the latest rumor.

NJ:
Taylor Hall - Adam Henrique - Beau Bennett
Jimmy Vesey - Travis Zajak - Kyle Palmieri

NYR:
Chris Kreider - Derek Stepan - Rick Nash
Jimmy Vesey - Mika Zibanejad - Mats Zuccarello

Chi:
Jimmy Vesey - Jonathan Toews - Patrick Kane
Artemi Panarin - Artem Anisimov - Nick Schmaltz

Which gives him the best chance for big stats?

First off let's be real here Kane will be playing with Panarin, let's not juggle around the lines to make it look more attractive, it's not necessary anyways with Toews being on the line to start with. Secondly, let's just admit that Coach Q is not the type to just hand someone a first line role because there is hype behind them, the Hawks are a perennial contender, and a big reason is they make everyone earn their way, they won't merely hand a rookie with no pro experience a pivotal 1st line role. Winners don't do that

He could of course go to camp and wow everyone and earn it but it sounds like he wants some things promised to him, so who knows that might rub him the wrong way...maybe not

How so?

Bowman has history of overpaying players + When Hawks cant afford player they trade them to team that gleefully will pay them

Right. The article makes it sound like that isn't something Vesey wants. At least, that is the way I am reading it. When mentioning 2nd and 3rd contracts, it seems like he is looking for stability. Chicago can offer him a lot in terms of $$$ off the bat and talent to play with. Long term they can probably offer the least of the three due instability and what you said above.

I'm sure Vesey will be dazzled by Hoboken's "incredible suburbs and school districts"

He can be promised whatever he wants. If he doesn't go out there and perform at some sort of reasonable level given his potential role/playing time, the team isn't going to care if their promise is broken. If he is promised top-6 minutes, and he proves that he isn't at that level yet, it doesn't do either party any good to continue to force it if further development at a lower role is needed (AHL or decreased role at the NHL level).

Chicago signing him would make these boards melt

The only reason I would be perplexed is because of what was stated already. Vesey is looking long term. 2nd and 3rd contracts. There is just about no certainty with Chicago in that regard.

Other than that, who wouldn't want to play for the Hawks? Modern day dynasty, a chance to play with Toews and Kane... its appealing in the short term.

The potential Hawks lineup I presented where Kane and Panarin are separated is based on 2 things.

First, Q has mentioned he may move Hossa to Kruger's line to provide a true shutdown line, like he did in the playoffs last season. That would obviously change Toews line so someone has to move which brings me to the second reason.

Second, while the Panarin-Kane line was great last season, the Hawks were pretty much a one line team. Panarin has enough skill to drive a line almost as well as Kane does. Therefore the Kane-Panarin split was a possibility before the Vesey consideration because it would potentially provide more balanced scoring.

But, if you're correct and Q decides to leave the PAK line as is, then it's equally possible he leaves Hossa with Toews and it would be Vesey-Toews-Hossa which is also a very nice spot for Vesey to break into the NHL.

As for "Q is not going to hand a player a top-6 role" - correct, if Vesey is not capable of playing top-6 then he won't play there long, if at all. But if he is ready for a top-6 role Q has proven he will play a rookie there - see Panarin last season and Saad a few seasons ago.
