Confirmed Signing with Link: [BUF] D Rasmus Dahlin signs extension with the Sabres (8 years, $11M AAV)

That said, this may have just set the bar for the next wave of top-10 defenceman, so it may not look as high in a few years. Time will tell.
Dahlin is only 24 when they deal begins. So logically, these are going to be the best 8 years of his career which takes him to age 32.

So, nothing wrong with paying the market rate for prime years. You are paying for quality. This isn't a 28 year old that you signed to age 36, such as Seth Jones, OEL, etc.

Lots of good points in here but Senators fans are embarassing themselves in here comparing Sanderson to Dahlin.

The former is not even comparable on levels to the latter.

That money will get eaten up quickly, just watch.

I'm sure it will, but with a core of

Cozens, Thompson, Dahlin and Power making a combined 35-36 million, having 50+ to round out that team over the next few years COULD be amazing.

Can't see the downside here.

much like Ottawa you are building contracts around a core that has had no success.

It’ll be interesting to see who is more successful over the next few years, Anaheim or Ottawa and Buffalo.

Add Samuelsson to that. He doesn’t put up the sexy stats, but he’s definitely underrated. And he’s signed for 7 more seasons. He’s basically the Sabres version of Lindgren to Dahlin’s Fox, as a comparison to the Rangers d-corps.

Might turn out well if the cap goes up but it's definitely not cheap
Buffalo better hope he keeps playing well

I look at it this way.

If the cap does indeed go up and Dahlin elevates his level of play. Wins a couple of Norris trophies while still in the sphere of Makar and Fox after their next contacts when they are making 13 to 14 million each.

Well then it will be an absolute steal of a contract with Dahlin making 11 million a season to be on the same level as the other top defensemen making 2 to 4 million more.

Right now optics look bad but it could be a very different look in the future especially in favor for Buffalo.

Player salaries going up is a sign rhat the league is making money right? Especially with Vegas winning and Seattle bringing in a huge half a billion expansion fee.

If you like the contract, great, but in no world is an 11 million dollar per year contract a "steal" in the NHL; that gets thrown around more than the "generational" tag, lol.

It's an overpayment today with the expectation that it will be under market value later in the contract.

You can look at the Dahlin/Makar contract comparisons like this, starting at the 1st year of their second contract, when Dahlin was age 21 and Makar age 22

Dahlin Makar
6 9
6 9
6 9
11 9
11 9
11 9
11 ?
11 ?
11 ?
11 ?
11 ?

Dahlin will make $6 million more over years 7-9, but Makar will make a total of $3 million more over years 4-9, and, in all likelihood, another $10 million or so more over years 10-14.

The idea that he’s being paid more than Makar is extremely limited thinking.

Both Thompson and Dahlin were injured, and both were playing through it during the last stretch.

Just like many other players do, expecially wrist injuries. That isn't an excuse if they're in the lineup

Citing a stretch where both were playing hurt as evidence that they’re not actually as good as their healthy numbers indicate is..well, good luck with that argument.

The argument is based off a person discussing Thompson scoring like McDavid. Thompson had multiple minor injuries throughout the season, just like McDavid. Even if both were fully healthy, McDavid would still pull away and perhaps to a greater extent

The argument was basically “he’s obviously gonna regress/isn’t actually that good and was coasting off the Sabres’ forward talent, just look at his numbers when Thompson slumped.” Which is a garbage argument for a number of reasons, the most obvious of which was a that Dahlin played for 4-6 weeks where he should’ve been on IR because it was spring, and the Sabres were in the hunt for a playoff spot.

Good deal for a beast.

11M per with a rising cap is absolutely fair for a former #1 overall pick 23 year old D, coming off an essentially PPG.

Don’t listen to the haters, they are just jealous they don’t have Dahlin.
