Rumor: Should the CBJ pursue Elias Pettersson?

He's significantly better than Laine ever was but I can understand the concerns. Columbus actually has the pieces to get this done if they want to so people are going to speculate. Maybe Don is actually interested too.

It would have to make sense trade wise, I don't buy Pettersson is some damaged goods player forever now, we're talking about one year, not a string of 2-3 of bad production. I also don't know if the risk is worth giving up a young top player. At first I was all for it but now I see more benefit in going for a top D man. Pettersson would make times even more exciting though.

The only scenario that makes sense to me is if it's for a pick (a player not in our top six) and a prospect.

Anything else, I’m not in favor of. So, I’d say no to trading Fantilli, Marchenko, Voronkov, KJ, Mateychuk, Jenner, or Monahan.

I heard the rumor that Carolina was close to trading Necas, KK, and a pick for Petey before they went with the Moose deal. That was almost finalized.

Am I taking crazy pills reading that trade board thread? They're throwing around names like Fantilli and Mateychuk for a guy on pace for 60 points and making 11m+. On top of getting dogged by another player, his own GM, and his own coach?

Isn't Pettersson one of the most recent & longest superstar contracts to be signed?

It's worth noting that his contract might be considered quite team-friendly, fairly soon. Isn't the rumor that the salary cap increases for the next 3-4 years will be announced sometime during 4Nations?

The current expectation is a shift to players demanding shorter terms to ensure their contracts keep pace with significant future cap inflation. Petey might still be in his prime and locked in for 2-3 years yet when his 11m contract is worth the current equivalent of like 7m. it's possible that few additional players will sign contracts of this length for the foreseeable future.

Compare this case, for instance, with Silly (not saying I want to lose him, by any means): Silly entered the league as one of the youngest players, then burned a year immediately off his ELC. He has the chance to be one of the longest-tenured players in the history of the NHL, but he'll also be one of the youngest to reach free agency. This revises his long-term cost calculus upward in the same way it revises Petey's downward.

Just food for thought.

I am overall Yes to Don managing to leverage basically any combination of:

• Next year's first
• Jiricek's overall net return (all of it, if necessary)
• Any one forward not Marchy/Vronk/KJ/Fants (including Lindstrom)
• Any/all necessary combined returns of Provorov, Kuraly, and Labanc

Into:

• Elias Pettersson and
• A serviceable RHD, esp. Rasmus Andersson

The counter-situation is something like keeping the roster together, going for (e.g.) Boeser and a D-man in the off-season (keep in mind VAN might be able to keep him now, though if EP goes to e.g. Buffalo), and still having to make some tough roster decisions in the future.

I think the poll-worthy question for the fanbase should be something like: Is it worth losing, e.g., Silly to take a shot at the cup this year while also having a 100pt superstar center locked in for longer than most anyone else in the league? <-- For me, the answer is YES: I'm sentimental, but that's tidy business, sorry.

Don't like the fit, as I posted elsewhere. Pettersson is a really good player, but that doesn't make him the right player for CBJ's needs right now. I would not go out on the limb for Pettersson because of a SLIM chance of a Cup run this year. Keep building this - get the fit right - then make the splash and run. Pettersson isn't that player for me.

Here's the thing...everyone wants Fantilli from their fanbase but even Vancouver's leadership knows they are going to get hosed on any trade right now. At best they will get a 2C/high 3C (Like Sillinger) and players they can use to win now...they are not interested in futures. If the Necas trade is a good barometer that not many teams are rushing to give Vancouver their assets for either of these 2 centers there.

I am absolutely for this move, provided it doesn't cost Fantilli, Voronkov, Marchy, Werenski, or Monahan. A center lineup of Fantilli, Monahan and Pettersson would be among the strongest in the NHL for the next several years. I'd give up multiple 1sts, Lindstrom, Sillinger...whatever it took. Only one that would give me pause is Matechuk.
