I picked up Hathaway for my Fantasy Team for hits/penalty minutes last week.
He averaged about 13-14 minutes a night for the Caps and the great thing about him is that he's a presence. When he's on the ice opposing players need to be aware.
198 hits 65 blocked shots.
He's a gamer!

I doubt Don is done yet🤔

Orlov hasn't really played the right side in basically a decade. He came up in juniors and minors as a RD, but the Caps converted him to LD and he's pretty much stuck to that side ever since.

Can Orlov play the PP? Yes. But he also really hasn't done it as a primary duty in the NHL. This is in large part because of the Capitals PP scheme wanting a RD at the point (allowing a natural one-timer and forehand feed to Ovechkin at the left circle), combined with the fact the Capitals have had guys like Carlson, Green, Shattenkirk, Niskanen, and now Gustaffson contending for PP time. So Orlov has largely only received garbage PP time as part of PP2 or when other guys were hurt/serving penalties/etc.

Every Caps fan is going to miss Orlov. He was a pillar on our defense for a long time. Orlov-Niskanen was our shutdown pairing when we won the Cup in 2018. He's a huge open-ice hitter (search up his hits on YouTube and grab some popcorn). He's got good hands and will occasionally dazzle you with a deke thru the entire opposing team. He's got a huge shot and huge frame. But he's also having his weakest season in a while, and subjectively it looks like his first step is a lot more tentative since returning from injury. I wouldn't necessarily expect him to be a dominating first pairing presence with McAvoy. Nor would I be willing to give him the 6 year deal he's reportedly looking for. But he could be a realiable 2nd pairing defensive stalwart and PKer who provides occasional bursts of additional play as you guys go deep in the playoffs.
Great post. Puts things in perspective. It’s a home run off the wall. I’m OK with cheap ones!

:popcorn:Thank you so much for this scouting report. Please come back from time to time and check in!:thumbu:

Question...at the start of this thread some were bidding farewell to Clifton.
Is he gone?
I cannot find any info if so.

If this is speculation...I'd dump Gryz before Cliffy...maybe.

Well, fudge nuts. Had too many windows open while trying to process this trade and posted the following on the main trade board when I meant to post it here:

Batted around in my head past few seasons of what would I think with the Bs addressing toughness with Hathaway on the team. Never could come up with a definitive answer. A little too borderline for my liking, but is a hitting machine with some offensive skill, not to mention a royal pain in the behind. A real puke. Now he's our puke and just what the Bs need for the playoffs. Orlov is an obvious great addition.

Thank goodness they avoided Kane and his like. Would have been an unnecessary addition and not allowed much room to address other areas.

This season is as all-in as a team can get. Love the trade. DS addressed several things with only a couple additions. Brilliant move by DS. Fairly big price for those two players, but in the big scheme of things it was going to take some doing to move some salary, bring in toughness, address depth on the bottom 6 and on D. Would be awesome if either or both of those guys can be signed for a reasonable amount after the season.

Rest of the Eastern Conference just got a little more nervous. DS is grinning ear to ear, and so am I.

Caps fan coming in peace. You picked up two guys that play hard every night. Scorlov is defensively responsible and has a cannon and can puck handle like an legit offensive player. And Hathaway has no quit. He makes any fourth line dangerous - he can score, fight, be a pest. Congrats.

I have to say I Love This trade!!!. I hope someone with a greater understanding of the cap ,will be able to break down what the cap savings will do for the Bruins. I feel our management group felt this was important. I know it may be for another addition, but think it has more to do with player bonuses and next years cap

O'Reilly and Acciari were good adds by Toronto. Didn't move the needle on my worry meter much though. If Toronto had instead added Orlov and Hathaway my sense of concern about meeting Toronto in the playoffs would have risen noticeably.

Toronto is still an incomplete team. Bs just became the undisputed most complete team in the NHL. Carolina is not worrying me as much as they did before today's trade.

Love this deal, Hathaway is a physical, dirty, big man who hits everything. Excellent pick up. Orlov becomes a true number 3 who you can pair with Mac and now a left side of Orlov, Lindholm and Forbort with currently Grizz and Zboril as depth. Giving the devil his due, excellent trade by Sweeney.
First thing I thought about after this trade....A happy Fenian.
