Seravalli: Broberg/agent requesting a trade (mod: title updated, Oilers didn’t give permission to Broberg to seek a trade)

At least at the price he was demanding. Easy to say you can't find a buyer when the price you are asking is too high. I find it hard to believe that with 31 teams not a single team wanted a $836,000 Broberg. I'm more likely to believe it was a lack of effort and inflexibility on Holland's part. But then who am I to judge. Holland has probably been spending every waking minute looking for that savior goalie.
I'm not gonna sit here and defend Ken Holland, but I would rather him ask high than give away for next to nothing. Especially considering the organization has always been high on him and not wanting to give him up.

I'd agree with @ChaoticOrange that this is probably more a case of Broberg wanting a change.

If the Flames are going to trade all their dmen, there may be room for him for that 5th they got from the Nucks for Zadorov

You realize that not getting the best player available doesn't mean a pick was bad, right? Or am I talking to a child ?
You're right what I'm saying is childish and not "my team never makes mistakes it's just a coincidence we're one of the worst teams in the league"

The first time I see Broberg play I can see his defense ability.
He's not the guy who puts a lot of # on board but can be effective in defense.
Probably return a 3 or a 4th round pick and a b or c prospect.
His skating and range does lend itself to being a good rush defender. That's probably the best part of his game that has potential.

That said, he has issues in small, crowded areas of the ice which is where the majority of the defensive game is played. His awareness and thinking isn't fast enough to deal with those situations with any effectiveness at this point. It may be a confidence thing though, he doesnt play the game assertively and is tentative out there. The Oilers have never put him in a spot to have confidence since he should have been in the AHL playing big minutes instead of moonlighting at a 3rd pair playing low minutes.

When the fanbase was screaming for any of Zegras, Boldy, or Caufield and management reaches for a guy ranked 15-20 and then trades him for pennies on the dollar five years later, it's pretty definitively a bad pick.
I was referring to Kotkaniemi, not Broberg, who clearly wasn't a good pick at that point in the draft.

Lias Andersson was traded for 60th overall pick, late 2nd. Sounds about right here.

Good question. They've given up on him and don't see him in their future plans? Their defense is so terrible that even a bad Broberg is better than no Broberg?
Maybe a swap of guys that seem to have lots of talent but lack processing speed? Broberg for Boquist (CBJ)?

Didn’t realize things were this bad. Imo Broberg needs to shut his trap, go to the minors (if his club thinks he needs that) and do all that his coaches are telling him to be a better player. He’s sounding like an entitled whiner. And the club is actually winning right now!

could see detroit being interested in the broberg project to put him in grandrapids in effort to improve griffs and maybe get broberg going , the obvious swedish influence within redwing organization a factor too

Nice response Ken, true professional, confirms some form of insubordination for the team he is supposed to manage, and the likely outcome? A still traded player and unnecessary escalations.

I remember when Oilers fans said he was untouchable.

Good times

This is a site centered around prospects so they obviously get overrated. They can certainly be valuable (to some teams more than others) but a lot of fans assume a prospect for their favorite team is likely to hit the upper limit of what that prospect is projected to be, when that is rarely the case. Not many reach it or surpass it

I don’t remember many people saying this. Lots of Oiler fans have wanted to trade him for a while.

He was untouchable from Hollands perspective because he’s to arrogant to admit a mistake

I call it prospectitis: the assumption every prospect on your team will fully attain their identified potential.

I am sure there are some fans that think that. But Broberg was a controversial pick at the time. There were as many people who liked the pick as disliked. I don’t think the average Oilers fan has held him in the regard you are talking about.

Holland’s been all but supplanted as GM and this proves it. My guess is Broberg’s agent went directly to Jeff Jackson and never told Holland about it.

Our management said this, not us  most of us would have traded him as soon as we dealt for Ekholm. Writing was on the wall.

Yeah, realistically you did “okay” if a pick in the 20’s or later turns into “just a 3rd liner”, or a guy in the ~5-20 range becomes a 2nd liner or 2nd pair guy. Most 1st rounders aren’t going to be 1st liners or 1D. I suppose it’s hope that keeps expectations up
