St. John's won 3-2 over Bridgeport, the two teams play again Sunday afternoon.

Highlights from todays game:

Couple of notes:

Aaron Ness left game midway through second period with a leg injury. He did not return. Speculation here, but looks like he could be out for a bit. This is a good thing as it should open up a spot in the line-up for Pedan. Isles fans know what they have in Ness (NOTHING). Time to see if Pedan has a prayer of getting to the show, would make a solid 3rd pairing partner with Graham.

Poulin looked good, he was tested often in the first two periods.... gave up one softy of the second (Kosmachuk) goal. Other than that looked good.

Zolnierczyk was all over the ice, couldn't finish anything but sure did create a lot....looked great on the PK, had several chances there.

Collberg looked good with Lee and mouillierat. That was the st best line. Created a lot. Collberg didn't figure on the score sheet on the first goal, but his check on the end boards allowed Lee to do his thing In the corner.

Pelech made a few nice plays but the d needs some work. Still some rust back there.

Sea dogs miss mouillierat that's for sure. Could have been ugly if he still played for them. They are still a well coached team, and based on their system and discipline alone should contend this year.

don't want to be too much bother, but do you think Zolnierczyk and Mouillierat might be able to fit in on our 4th line? i remember when Zol first played against us, and i was thinking what a pain in the ass he was to play against.

wondering about Persson and Sundstrom too. if you have time...

Mouillierat is a real nice AHL scorer. I don't think he has enough tools to consider him an NHL player, certainly not a traditional 4th line type player. Maybe a powerplay specialist in the form of a Randy Robitialle back in the day. But that's not much.

Zolnierczyk is a guy I've always liked. He is a real spark plug. Like you said, he's just a real pain to play. He's fearless, attacks the net, not intimidated by anyone. Really useful penalty killer. He could absolutely find a home in the NHL as a spark plug.

Persson, I've never been a huge fan. Simple game does good along the boards and goes to the net hard. He's pretty one dimensional with a lot of warts. And IMO that one dimension is not good enough to get him to the show for anything more than a cup of coffee.

Sundstrom I like a lot, last year he really struggled after the concussion. I want to see him forecheck hard and go to the net with reckless abandon like he once did. He still looks a little timid to me. Smart player though, great in the neutral zone.

Confirmed......Ness is out.... Pedan is IN.

2-2 after the first. Pedan does have an assist

I think Pedan has more potential then Ness, dunno why our coaching staff doesn't see that. Pedan has size, Ness is a tweener.

I am guessing they resigned Ness to have an experienced defender in bridgeport. I am not really high on Pedan but he seems like he can be an agitator/enforcer #6 guy which could be useful

Looked at some of the Bridgeport highlights, tip in by Colleberg off shot by Czuzcman. Nothing spectacular on Czurcman's goal just threw the puck on net along the ice, goalie may had been screened.
Two goals for Harry Z.

Pedan is your typical all tools, no toolbox type player.

At least that is what I gathered from my viewings.

I think his upside is a Meszaros type defenseman in the NHL.

I would love to see if he can be converted into a power forward.

I like his feistyness and hes a good skater too. Hopefully he has a nice career with the Islanders. If we sign Boychuck long term, I can't see him ever being an Islander, but I can see him in the bottom 6 possibly with Mayfield, either pedan or Pelech.

De haan-Hamonic
Pulock-Reinhart
Leddy-Mayfield
Hickey-Pedan (or Pelech)

I can see that as our future top 8 group, with one being in the AHL and the other being our #7 dman.

I love the combo of offense and defense with this group. Obviously my preference is to resign Boychuck, and with the start he's gotten off to, and the top pairing minutes he's receiving now, he may enjoy staying and signing. We shall see.

I've seen Pedan fight a bit over the last few years. Kid can throw. He reminds me so much of Malakhov it isn't funny. The ability to win fights on the rare occasion they go. The big heavy slapper. and the 10 cent head. He's like a reincarnate.

Malakhov scored 10+ goals and 50+ points as an NHL rookie. I don't think Pedan has that kind of ability. Of course it was a different league back then (higher scoring), but Malakhov had excellent skating ability and a bomb of a shot. You are right about the 10 cent head. He went from looking like a future Allstar Dman to invisible pretty quickly. And you are right, you didn't want to wake up the sleeping giant (Malakhov), he really knew how to throw them. He got to win a Cup with the Devils, so I was happy for him. Also played for the Rangers. So he played for all 3 local teams, but he was one of the biggest wastes of talent I've ever seen, he could skate, shoot, pass, hit, fight, shoulda been like Rob Blake, but played defense like Jason Blake.

Malakhov was a 24 year old as a rookie with loads of international experience, but I get you're point. I would never pencil in Pedan for 50+ points in the NHL, but 1993 was one of the highest scoring seasons in NHL history.... maybe THE highest? Same season Teemu obliterated Bossy's rookie scoring record. A few years later the trap took over the NHL and Malakhov faded away,

Fact remains, this guys has reminded me of Malakhov for a long time, similar strengths and weakness', skill sets, style of play and personalities.

I agree with your last sentence. Though Pedan plays more like a North American, he still has that Russian mindset in that he has no fear in using those talents he's obviously used while in Russia, he has no problem leading a rush, no problem shooting a lot, and no problem dangling. Very talented BIG Russian.

I agree, except that I think his upside is Meszaros' Pejorative Slured cousin.

Pedan's lack of toolbox is evident even at the AHL level. I doubt he ever gets more than a cup of coffee in the NHL.

The kid can throw down though, if he can just come up once and destroy someone like Gleason (when he's acting like an idiot like the last 2 games) then I consider Pedan worth it. :)
