TSN: Brendan Shanahan named President of Toronto Maple Leafs

Reasons why Shanahan accepted the job:

1) Job security and more $$. The league's disciplinarian is always under scrutiny no matter what he does and that probably helps him in his time with the Leafs.

2) A challenge.

Shanahan is a hall of famer.. he wants a challenge and the Leafs are as tough a challenge as it gets. I don't know what his role will be but I am just hoping he can bring some credibility back to the Leafs.

We ****ing suck and always excuses in April. I don't want excuses...I want people like our fake captain to walk up to the podium and say the truth...we choked under pressure. Captain Cliche can get the **** out of here.

Someone who's made around $60 million over his career accepts a job and uproots his family for $2-3 million job security? I think not.

I am sure the challenge is part of it, didn't say otherwise, just stated he doesn't accept this job to be puppet/yes man to Leiweke.

Shanahan
Hextall
?????
Blashill

And a mass firing of the current assistants and scouting personnel, and we are gold.

Don't forget the players...you can't polish a turd. Too many floaters on our team.

Clean house top to bottom. Rub Purrell over the entire TML team.

if they aren't getting rid of Nonis then this is just piling on
Its like spraying the BO with Detroit scented febreeze...smell good for a bit but will still be a pile of ****

I doubt he'd leave his current job, or have turned down GM positions to be a figurehead. All accounts say hes the man in charge of all hockey operations.

I agree , he wouldn't come here just to be a figurehead with no real power . How successful he'll be we'll just have to wait and see .

Will he be controlling/actually deciding on every one of Nonis' moves?

Not on a day-to-day basis
but he might have the power of veto, and can suggest moves or types of moves, be involved in discussion etc.

On top of that he can fire and replace Nonis.

But he will probably be busy doing other ****.
He's coming in just in time for the Leafs 100th anniversary, and we're looking for Draft Day, All-Star Festivities, and possibly a Classic as well as our own club events, activities, and special games/jerseys, etc.

Accomplished a lot with a team that didn't have goaltending or a great D. Though Berube is doing the same thing so it might just be Flyer hockey.

I want our next coach to be someone who gets the most out of the group, realizes constructive criticism unlike Carlyle who just said "We don't critique wins," if he critiqued the wins...perhaps we wouldn't have lost 8 in a row.

Emphasis on effort, getting back on defense, possession etc. We shot ourselves in the foot too many times...

I want a coach who can get this team to play against any team...whether it be Montreal or Florida.

okay - but why Lavi?
(sorry - what I mean is - why lavi over say someone like Dineen or someone who developed players to play really well in any system like Blashill?)

Sounds like official announcement of Brendan Shanahan as new president of Toronto Maple Leafs will be made tomorrow in a news release.

He was responsible for the Clarkson signing?Did not know that. Still doesn't invalidate his other accomplishments. Besides, what's wrong with Shanahan? We can't go any lower.

yes apparently he told nonis to sign clarkson

there's nothing wrong with shanahan. but a press release isn't going to make the team better so i'm not going to get excited until the team is actually improved

also i don't agree that leiweke has a lot of accomplishments. he seems like a lot of talk to this point although i'm happy about bernier

We just signed a community liaison and party organizer?

Is there any proof that TL told Nonis to sign Clarkson? Not that signing Clarkson was a bad idea - the bad idea was giving him too many years and too much $.

But ignoring TL's accomplishments in LA, he's already turned Toronto FC from arguably the biggest joke of all professional sports teams in North America into a powerhouse squad by personally pursing two superstars.

He also turned the Raptors from a joke to a 3rd seed by hiring the most sought-after GM in the business.

Now this is his first big stamp on the Leafs. But given the fact that he's been here for what, like 8 months...I think he's accomplished a hell of a lot.

Excuse Me:

What do you think will happen to the team of Assistant GM's?

Will they all be sacked as well as Nonis?

As I said in the other couple of threads:

I don't get this move at all.

He has no experience in any capacity running a club and was never a Leaf so they can't even cash in on fans goodwill towards him.

I dont care for this move much.
Shanny has no experience in the field of running a team or ties to the franchise.

Its a name to appease the fans.

Feel the same way. Shanny could turn out to be brilliant and turn this franchise around, but right now he's got no experience..there's isn't much here to be excited about with this move.

To be fair, I was excited when Burke came on since he laid down the foundation for a successful Canucks team, and brought in pieces to win the Cup in Anaheim. Really thought he was going to turn the team around

it's been brought up on tsn radio quite a bit. if u go look through Hope Smoke's tweets there are references to it there

as far as leiweke's accomplishments, i will only give him credit for helping the leafs when he does. toronto fc and raptors are not leafs
