@DarrenDreger: In addition to title of President of the Maple Leafs, Shanahan is expected to be named an alternate governor. Confirmation of hire Friday.

I'm so excited with this news I don't think I'll be able to sleep much tonight! Shanahan will hire some ex Leafs players as I suggested in my thread which is now closed for some reason. This hiring is great news!! :handclap:

it's been brought up on tsn radio quite a bit. if u go look through Hope Smoke's tweets there are references to it there

as far as leiweke's accomplishments, i will only give him credit for helping the leafs when he does. toronto fc and raptors are not leafs

He focused on the 2 teams that needed help the most and fixed them. The Leafs were coming off a playoff season and looked good for the future. He wasn't going to make changes in the middle of the season. TL is very good at what he does, I'm very interested in what he has planned this summer for the Leafs when they will have all his attention.

yes apparently he told nonis to sign clarkson

there's nothing wrong with shanahan. but a press release isn't going to make the team better so i'm not going to get excited until the team is actually improved

also i don't agree that leiweke has a lot of accomplishments. he seems like a lot of talk to this point although i'm happy about bernier

Source?

Feel the same way. Shanny could turn out to be brilliant and turn this franchise around, but right now he's got no experience..there's isn't much here to be excited about with this move.

To be fair, I was excited when Burke came on since he laid down the foundation for a successful Canucks team, and brought in pieces to win the Cup in Anaheim. Really thought he was going to turn the team around

This is how I feel about it. Shanny might turn out to be a great move. Just bothers me that he has zero front office experience.
Even guys like Stevie Y spent time in other organizations learning before moving up to take over the GM job.

Where all the Tim L doubters at?

lol... what doubters... this announcement comes right after playoff elimination... talk about smoke and mirrors... nicely timed distraction there, Timmy... too bad for you that not all the fans fall for it.. why? cause we've seen this all before

Stevie is a GM. Big difference between GM and President.

Also, everyone has to start somewhere...he soaked the pressure of a tough job as the league's disciplinarian so clearly he knows a thing or two about pressure.

Leiweke hinted during Strombo interview that he wants people who can thrive under pressure. I think Shanahan can do that.

Sometimes you need a guy who is new and fresh and has something to prove. The old guys can rely on their famed moves to keep them in the league. Im not opposed to this at all and welcome the attempt.

I like it.

This is just all kinds of positive.

As others have said. He's the president, not the GM. It's the perfect role for him imo..

So I guess we'll get our wish and half this crap team and contracts will be gone after the season

If this is the same position as linden (President of hockey operations) got in Vancouver, then this is a HUGE move by the leafs. He will be in charge of everything, coaching, scouting, player personnel, drafting, all trades/signings, everything.

Nonis will be doing nothing. Which is what you guys wanted no?

As I said in the other couple of threads:

I don't get this move at all.

He has no experience in any capacity running a club and was never a Leaf so they can't even cash in on fans goodwill towards him.

He has experience in the league office and he's well connected within the game.

Some fans might not understand the hire, but the public doesn't know nearly as much about Shanahan as the person who hired him. I'm sure Leiweke had discussions with Shanhan about his ideas for the team, talked to other people in the league office about him, explored other candidates. He didn't just read his Wikipedia page and decide to offer him the job.

Nonis is already on borrowed time at this point. No way he isn't gone after these next 2 games.

Heard this once again on Leafs Lunch.
So the guy that actually initiated one of the worst signings in the history of the club, or even the league, is the guy that everybody is looking at to clean up the mess.
Only in Leafland.

Well yes, but we wanted Vancouver to hire Nonis more-so than keep him

So you liked the Burke hiring and it turned out bad.

You don't like the Shanny hire so maybe that is boding that it might turn out good.

:)
