TSN: Brendan Shanahan named President of Toronto Maple Leafs

I don't think that's an option. This franchise needs improvements from top down.

I'm not gonna overreact if Nonis et al aren't fired in May.

I hope Shanahan does a full and thorough assessment before making a knee jerk reaction.

IMO change for the sake of change and knee jerk reactions is what has this franchise where it is

I'd say former GM, current GM, former coach, current coach, ****** player development and the inability to correct those in a timely fashion is what has this franchise where it is. I could be wrong, but I do have facts on my side

why Lavi?

Accomplished a lot with a team that didn't have goaltending or a great D. Though Berube is doing the same thing so it might just be Flyer hockey.

I want our next coach to be someone who gets the most out of the group, realizes constructive criticism unlike Carlyle who just said "We don't critique wins," if he critiqued the wins...perhaps we wouldn't have lost 8 in a row.

Emphasis on effort, getting back on defense, possession etc. We shot ourselves in the foot too many times...

I want a coach who can get this team to play against any team...whether it be Montreal or Florida.

If the Leafs plan to end their cup drought of theirs...Rebuild completely and properly. Pick a style in which you want the Leaf team to play and draft accordingly to a certain degree.

Jesus, does anybody really think there is going to be a rebuild because of this? This is more of the same.

I dont care for this move much.
Shanny has no experience in the field of running a team or ties to the franchise.

Its a name to appease the fans.

I don't know if I agree or disagree. What does the team president even do? Shanahan has lots of experience with the PA and the League that might make him qualified for the job. The question I want to know is what is the job? I see people on twitter freaking out like he'll run the team into the ground(spoilers: it's already there) and others who are ecstatic because Shanny is a GOOD OL CANADIAN IRISH MIMICO ONTARIA BOY, HE'S A WINNER AND A WARRIOR AND HE'LL BRING THAT ATTITUDE TO THE TEAM.

He doesn't coach the team, he doesn't sign/trade players, what does the president do what makes him qualified or unqualified?

You guys do realize if it was just a name, it probably would've been an Oilers-esque move in bringing in a Leafs alumni like a Gilmour/Clark/Sittler to run hockey ops?

I have nothing against Shanahan, and he could very well possess the necessary pedigree to evolve into a top level NHL executive, but this decision feels like window dressing, and the timing reeks of a desperate ploy to distract the masses from focusing on this club's latest epic collapse.

If Shanahan is given the necessary autonomy to enact real change this off season at the managerial/coaching level, then perhaps this might have an impact on the trajectory of the organization. If he is going to be merely a figure head, it'll just be another case of MLSE wasting millions of dollars in assembling a Leafs front office that will make no tangible difference to the product on the ice.

Maybe, or they were terrified at what those 3 would actually do the status quo

Nonis 5 yr extension? Knee jerk

Carlyle hiring mid season when there was no where else for him to go and Wilson's 18 wheeler falling of a cliff? Knee jerk

Player development I'll give you, but hard to knock PD when the knee jerk reaction to holes in the team is trade high picks for vets

I hope his first step is stealing some of Detroits scouts in time for the draft.

At the very least, hopefully he will increase our scouting and use some of the methods that Detroit has incorporated in their player development.

I doubt he'd leave his current job, or have turned down GM positions to be a figurehead. All accounts say hes the man in charge of all hockey operations.

I'm Rob Ford high on Jeff Blashill, personally. He's done an epic job with developing all the players you see on the Wings today, in just his 2nd season. Oh, and his 1st season being a Calder Cup without needing all the vets to be ridden like Eakins did. Time for a fresh idea. Lavi would just be another retread who had success elsewhere and likely won't here.

Agreed. I will also add, his made over $40+ million over his career, does anyone think he will accept a job just to be Leiweke's puppet/yes man? That's one factor that has been overlooked, Nonis has turned into a yes man, bringing in tim's son in law, rumours of Clarkson signing being pushed by Leiweke (who knows).

Leafs are one team that don't need to do anything for pr move, all of us will continue to watch the games, all the season tickets will continue to be renewed.

I'm not saying omg yes everything will be great now, but I am also not so dismissive that Shanny won't have impact either.

I will be open minded in the hopes Shanny can think somewhat outside the box, bring some real vision, maybe he'll be total failure or maybe he will succeed.

Only time will tell.

Reasons why Shanahan accepted the job:

1) Job security and more $$. The league's disciplinarian is always under scrutiny no matter what he does and that probably helps him in his time with the Leafs.

2) A challenge.

Shanahan is a hall of famer.. he wants a challenge and the Leafs are as tough a challenge as it gets. I don't know what his role will be but I am just hoping he can bring some credibility back to the Leafs.

We ****ing suck and always excuses in April. I don't want excuses...I want people like our fake captain to walk up to the podium and say the truth...we choked under pressure. Captain Cliche can get the **** out of here.

i don't care about the signing...but I am excited because of what it indirectly means....house is probably going to get cleaned.

I wasn't disagreeing with what you said, I just went low where you went high.

Going to be interesting what Shanahan has to say at his press conference when it happens. I pray to god that he decides to rebuild properly. We have nice pieces to keep, but our current core will never take us to cup-contending status.

No more Shanaban! :shakehead

He should be an exec with Detroit, not us! :nono:

Not sure I like this move, but, will keep an open mind. :amazed:

Shanahan
Hextall
?????
Blashill

And a mass firing of the current assistants and scouting personnel, and we are gold.

One thing I expect, our player's fitness to improve next year.

Shanahan was a fit player that trained with a guy named Ted Kackley when he was with Detroit.

He is light year's ahead of Belza.

Ted Kackley is a certified fitness trainer with a Bachelors degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of Massachusetts, Boston. His certification is through the National Strength and Conditioning Association(NSCA), one of the leading trainer certification programs in the country.

He has trained many high school, college and professional athletes such as Chris Drury of the Buffalo Sabres and Brendan Shanahan of the Detroit Red Wings hockey teams.
