I like this move a lot. I hope Carlyle is fired and Nonis is on a nanometer short leash if not fired.

I would love it if we can get this going:

Shanny
hextall GM
Laviolette coach.
GTFO Phaneuf, Lupul, other garbage.

He couldn't do anything if he wanted. Be interesting to see how much Shanahan looks back on his playing career and judges that as how to make a team win, ie lots of veterans brought in for cup runs

I still wouldn't surprised if Nonis is here though.

They will probably be other back room moves i.e Poulin(To CGY), Regional scouts, Fitness stuff like that.

Anyone who thinks Leiwicke is just hiring "yes men" is flat out wrong.

A yes man looks like JFJ not a former superstar and current league exec.

This is Leiwicke admitting he doesn't know hockey, but that he does know people. He's bringing in a guy who has an idea and a direction, and ties to the league office.

I assume Shanny will have full autonomy to do whatever he likes

Fair enough. What if he does nothing?

Leiweke - President and CEO of MLSE
Shanahan - President of Hockey Ops

Nonis - Senior Vice President of Hockey Ops & GM
Poulin - Vice President of Hockey Ops
Loiselle - Vice President of Hockey Ops & Assistant GM
Fletcher - Senior Advisor
Carlyle - Head Coach
Farrish - Assistant Coach
Gordon - Assistant Coach
Cronin - Assistant Coach
Dennis - Assistant Coach
St. Croix - Goalie Coach

Only the bolded are guaranteed to be back next season. The Leafs could rid themselves of Fletcher and Poulin and not even have to replace them. Too many cooks in the kitchen at the moment.

Would like to see Leiweke -> Shanahan -> Hextall -> Assistant GM -> Laviolette -> Assistants myself

Not sure if you read the article or not. But Shanahan isn't president of hockey ops.... His title is "President, Toronto Maple Leafs"

Suggesting he's completely running the franchise, much higher than the day to day hky stuff.

An official announcement on Brendan Shanahan with the Maple Leafs could come as early as tomorrow. #tvasports

For those of you that are convinced this hiring definitely means the end for Nonis:

When Nonis signed his 5-year deal with Leafs he was told that 1 day there will likely be team exec above him. And he's OK with that. #shanny

:handclap::handclap:

Someone who gets it. Leiweke admittedly isn't a hockey expert. Its not his job to build the team. Its his job to get the guys to build the team.

That was before another late season collapse. To assume TL has the same tolerance for Nonis now that he did last summer is inaccurate.

Good one. What's the idea and direction?

I don't think that's an option. This franchise needs improvements from top down.

I'm not gonna overreact if Nonis et al aren't fired in May.

I hope Shanahan does a full and thorough assessment before making a knee jerk reaction.

IMO change for the sake of change and knee jerk reactions is what has this franchise where it is

Should note; Bobby Mac said the other day that should Shanny come here, he would want to be very hands on

I dont care for this move much.
Shanny has no experience in the field of running a team or ties to the franchise.

Its a name to appease the fans.

Burke had experience.
Wilson had experience.
Nonis had experience.
Carlyle had experience.

Cliff Fletcher well he's just a silver fox.....:p:

Leafs need a fresh voice.

Good one. What's the idea and direction?

If the Leafs plan to end their cup drought of theirs...Rebuild completely and properly. Pick a style in which you want the Leaf team to play and draft accordingly to a certain degree.

Please, Please Santa.
And then Jeff Blashill.

for people not happy about this

1: him not having ties to the organization is a good thing. He's not blinded by the days of yesteryear when we were winningly mediocre not losingly mediocre.

2: The guy knows how to win, and he has been courted for ages. (and apparently by the Leafs for ages too going by the Cox article). He's benefited from the School of Winning Culture: Detroit.

3: him being a rookie is not a bad thing. People keep going 'OMGZ! JFJ!" okay get off it. Yzerman. Rookie. Sakic. Rookie. Roy. Rookie. Cooper. Rookie.

4: Change is coming. Let's go.

Agreed. I will also add, his made over $40+ million over his career, does anyone think he will accept a job just to be Leiweke's puppet/yes man? That's one factor that has been overlooked, Nonis has turned into a yes man, bringing in tim's son in law, rumours of Clarkson signing being pushed by Leiweke (who knows).

Leafs are one team that don't need to do anything for pr move, all of us will continue to watch the games, all the season tickets will continue to be renewed.

I'm not saying omg yes everything will be great now, but I am also not so dismissive that Shanny won't have impact either.

I will be open minded in the hopes Shanny can think somewhat outside the box, bring some real vision, maybe he'll be total failure or maybe he will succeed.

Only time will tell.

Neither did Dryden. I'd say he made out well with this team in the early 90's.

Point is you don't always need experience, you just need a powerful voice that always seems to be heard. Shanny has that.
