Player Discussion Brendan Gallagher: all heart, no hands

For those who say Brendan will never retire before 2027 and that no players retire with time left on their contract (they wait for a buyout if before end of contract) - there is always an exception.

Josh Bailey retired today with one year left on his deal. Salary this year would have been $3.5M (cap hit $5M).

The Isles attached a 2nd to Bailey and sent him to Chicago who then bought him out. He didn't have a contract in place for this coming season.

This has to be in the top 3-5 most unmovable contract in the league right now. He's owed 17M$ for this season and th next one and will count at 6.5M$ on the cap.

Best case scenario, he has one bounce back season, healthy, with 20goal and 50pts ish pace. Then, an injury riddled season, with a 30-40 pts pace and then LTIRetired or bought.

Worst case fourth liner play until LTIRetired or bought.

Buyouts give only 2/3rds of the remaining salary owed and over double the period. They punish the player quite a bit. Gallagher will not appreciate a buyout but even with a NMC he won't have much of a choice. Thankfully for him, Bergevin gave him double buyout protection first with the NMC (preventing his contract from getting waived) and then with the salary structure which has him paid a whopping 9m USD next season. He had 8 goals last season and 7 goals the season before. No team in the NHL would touch his contract as it is.

If his contract is bought out next summer, the cap penalty is as follows (starting 24-25):

This is a worthwhile buyout because due to Gallagher's injury, mobility, stamina, and skill deficiencies, a replacement-level/waiver-level 1.5m player will
contribute more than Gallagher. So even at its worst 4.6+1.5=6.1 is still less than Gallagher's caphit.

I'm really struggling trying to figure out where you insert Gallagher in the lineup
He clearly can't keep up with Caufield and Suzuki
He can't keep up with Monahan and Dach
He sure as heck can't keep up with Newhook and Anderson
He doesn't have the stamina and the defensive attributes to play on the 4th line
What do we do with this old beat up warrior ?

I think he would do well on a different team with the right linemates to make him productive, but with the way our roster is changing I don't think he has an obvious space. 4th line for now IMO

I look many line up with Gallagher on the fourth line. Im just wondering how he is goint to react? Lol. Playing 8/10 minutes and be paid 6,5 millions. That’s crazy

Gallagher doesn't seems to have the cardio/health to play more than 12 minutes a night (used to be 15 minutes).

That's his cap hit, he's being paid 8 mil this year and 9 mil next.

He can always pull a Zadina and bet on himself if he's not happy.

Hate to say it, but Gallagher would best fit with Uncle Lou’s team

It's a stinker of a contract, but fortunately no big contracts upcoming in the next several years. By the time Dach is ready for his next contract, Price will be off the books, Gallagher and Anderson will both be on their final season. Unless Slaf explodes, he'll probably get bridged. Guhle might be one to watch for.

Isn't Bailey at the Sens camp?

I would be surprised if he ever bounces back. It is more than just stamina. It seems like his shot has become terrible, he is a worse passer than before, and he seems to not be able to battle in front of the net like he once did. Bergevin was an idiot. I think we will most likely have to buy him out in a year or two.

But, here is hoping that he starts converting again. Who knows.

Multiple hand injuries have, quite literally, crippled his ability to score and make plays.

Feels like he needs someone on his line who can maintain sustained pressure in the offensive zone.

It might not fix things but at least he could go around the net, which he doesn’t seem to do much anymore.

Gallagher has historically been a slow starter in pre season so I don't want to gauge his play based on this pre season. Let's see after 10 games into the regular season.
