As for the game to game, I think he can play PK still… so that’s something.

Gallagher doesn’t play much on the penalty kill. He played a total of 15 seconds on it all of last season and 2 minutes and 12 seconds the season before.

He can but why would he?
If it comes to him sitting in the pressbox, he may want to make himself useful to the organization. Byron is now coaching in Laval.

For sure Gallagher will do everything presently to stay relevant in the NHL. But at some point reality will set in even for him. I was talking more about the future.

Would he not make way less in the AHL?

No his salary would be the exact same.
His take home pay would actually increase because he wouldn't have to put any money in escrow if he's not in the NHL. That's about the only reason I can see him waive his NMC for. But I still consider it slim to none. Pretty sure he would never subject himself to the humiliation of being in the AHL, he'd probably LTIRetire before playing in the AHL.

Gallagher to the AHL is a conversation we should not be having. We can and will talk about how Gallagher declined but it is what it is. I'm sure Gallagher is not happy about how he has decline... just as much as us fans are.

Gallagher will be in our bottom 6 for a bit yet. We have to learn to live with it. Just like we did with Drouin not performing to his contract. We don't really need cap space for a few seasons so lets set this aside for a later date.

Gallagher won't waive his NMC to go to the AHL so he can make 4% more without escrow. Escrow is held back yes but they do get it back if the 50/50 revenue split favors the owners. Regardless, these are meaningless conversations because it's just not going to happen. Gallagher will go on LTIR before he goes to the AHL.

I don't hate or distain Gally in anyway. MB is the target here.
that being said, Gally is killing this team, plus he himself must be upset on how his play has gone so far down hill.

Habs are stuck with him, unless he retires or goes LTR

I think 4th line is the only way to go where his ice time is limited and controlled. He can save some face at least and If by some miracle he improves he can move up. Some guys just don't age well and unfortunately it looks like gally is one of those guys. He is apparently a team guy so Hopefully he has a good attitude about it.
His situation reminds me a bit of Dustin Brown with the Kings a few years ago

That is encouraging, Brown really fell off after about his 8th season, same as Gallagher. After consistently scoring 20-30 goals a year Brown had 4 years where he scored 15-11-11- 14 while playing 80 games- similar to Gallys recent production on a per game basis, then he returned to form and put up seasons of 28 and 22.

Gally was/is a warrior, hope he can make it work but he has taken a beating. I have no issue with him getting his money, he was underpaid there for a lot of years. we really don't need the cap space right now. he may not be earning his contract now but he earned it in the past.

One thing with Gally is he won't sulk. He will give you everything he has left in whatever role you put him in.

He seems cooked. Too bad he doesn't have any really high end ability other than effort/fearlessness. Look at Monahan, still effective because he has high hockey IQ and size so being slow and broken isn't the end. Pearson looks to be in the same boat as Gallagher.

The fact MB saved all that cap space during the seasons they were getting 100+ points only to use it all up with dumb re-signs makes me so irritated lol.

Yes I know he’s not tasked with PK duties (didn’t know the low numbers, wow!) but he should be capable of it, no?

Post cap era I can’t think of a worse contract for Habs. Price is a close second though.

You need stamina and speed to play the PK. He's already not fast, he would get gassed 10 seconds into his shift. His small stature doesn't help either.

His best role is in the pressbox and give post game sound bites to reporters.

Yup, he did what it took to make and stay in the NHL. Literally gave his body to the org.

As much as I like to meme on him, you gotta respect his determination and devotion.
I image almost every Habs fan loved Gally at some point in time. Dude was great for us throughout his prime.

But fans have short memory. If Crosby fell of a cliff after his 3rd cup and became as useless as Gallagher, I'd bet he would be receiving the same treatment from pens fans.

Not sure what you expect. Most people respect Gallagher the person and acknowledge that he had a big contribution to the franchise’s success over his career. Sadly his decline has been steep and it’s becoming obvious that he’s not one of the 12 best forwards on the Habs anymore.

If only he still had his hands

Serious question- what becomes of Gallagher in the near future?
What happens if he goes pointless in the first 10 games?
I am in the same camp as most fans, we appreciate the 10+ years of hard hockey he has given but it is obvious that he can no longer keep up. Tough position that this management team is in. How do you deal with this?

I expect Gallagher to play this season and next, and if not LTIRed at that point he'll get bought out. Maybe we attach a high pick and get a rebuilding team to buy him out. Maybe Calgary's first gets us out of his contract in 2025.
