Player Discussion Brendan Gallagher: all heart, no hands

  • Work is still on-going to rebuild the site styling and features. Please report any issues you may experience so we can look into it.
I expect Gallagher to play this season and next, and if not LTIRed at that point he'll get bought out. Maybe we attach a high pick and get a rebuilding team to buy him out. Maybe Calgary's first gets us out of his contract in 2025.
I can't see him playing another season beyond this one. Something will have to give.

Money talks and if he is not eligible to go on LTIR, he's not going to retire. We have to learn to live with this one because the only way we can trade him, is to take on a equally as bad contract. Similar to the Neal for Lucic trade back when. That would not be worth it because Gallagher is still a good guy to have around our youth.

Does it bother Gallagher he can't produce like before? Sure it does. But he has a pay check to play for and he was on an extremely team friendly deal before this current one. He needs that money to be set for life.

No one will trade for Gallagher in that type of trade, he simply can't play anymore. Neal and Lucic were over the hill, but still could contribute somehow.

I can't see him take a free spot, so either they buy him out or they find a way to get him LTIR'd.

There wont be one more season of this, trust me.

It'll be a buy out I'm sure. He just can't keep up with the play and doesn't have the talent to compensate. Tenacity and hard work with a bit more speed allowed him to succeed. He was never the most talented guy.

It's sad but realistic. I wish they could just let him retire and keep him close to the young guys.

Ya. He's definitely not going to pick up his play and it's highly unlikely that he sees PP time, so forget about picking up those points. I said it before it happened - MB should've traded him rather than sign him to that ridiculous contract. Clearly his body was giving out. MB should've seen that. The guy was so short sighted.

If only he still had his hands

Serious question- what becomes of Gallagher in the near future?
What happens if he goes pointless in the first 10 games?
I am in the same camp as most fans, we appreciate the 10+ years of hard hockey he has given but it is obvious that he can no longer keep up. Tough position that this management team is in. How do you deal with this?
Well he's already the least used player on the team so it's not like you can cut his ice time much, so the options are wait it out on the assumption his next injury is right around the corner or healthy scratch him and play Pezzetta.

The best long term way forward is convince him to go on permanent LTIR and that likely only happens if he's a regular healthy scratch. So in all honesty I think we shouldn't even wait the 10 games. They can ease into it by starting with back to back games, the first of which is Oct 23rd and 24th and then there's 3 sets of B2B games in Nov.

We all know whats gonna happen
some mysterious injury will occur and he will end up in LITR , GMs are so good at doing this.
Does it even have to be a mystery illness, it's almost guaranteed that Gallagher is in pain every game, so like Price and Weber it's just a case of him deciding he can't/won't continue to play through the everyday pain.

Unless he realizes he's finished and doesn't want to embarrass himself more he will retire
Other wise I think have to plan for a buyout

It's in gally's best interest to lean into the grift. AFAIK, if he gets bought out he'll lose a third of what's left of his contract and I seriously doubt he recoups it on the open market. LTIR = he gets all his money without risking dying on the ice.

The contract generally becomes void at the moment the retirement papers are filed and recorded with both the league and the players’ association.

No one in their right mind is walking away from this amount of money:

Lou started Robidas Island when with the Leafs, and other GM's have used this out clause many times over.................if not, there is always the lower back stuff the guys from Detroit have been using for years, when they didn't want to play for 1M on the end of their deals....

He is now officially the little engine that can't

I'm sure Gallagher's contract is insured. If this keeps up, he will have to get benched and by the end of this season he will volunteer to LTIRetire. Thank you Bergevin and Sedgwick for the great contract structure btw.

The structure, is even worse than the contract itself..........absolutely amazing that Gally makes 8M this year, and 9M next year?
WTF were they thinking??

Don't you remember Bergevin crying when the contract was announced and what he said? That's what happened.

The Habs can't afford to have both Price and Gallagher on permanent LTIR.

I think he can be a serviceable 4th line grinder. But he can not be on the ice for more than ~40 seconds. He looks absolutely shot out there when he gets to the end of a shift.

Still a heart, soul and effort guy, but his usefulness has greatly diminished since our finals run.

The crying, was maybe one of the strangest things in the world of sport I have ever witnessed, and I am old! Gally had done absolutely nothing to deserve such a contract, and never won an award, helped the team to a Cup or anything for that matter?
I mean it was a WTF Bergevin moment..............
All, this yes, from a fan of Gally but seriously we all knew this was a bad bad contract and moment for the habs, and............................here we are.

He was plenty awful all of that season and in the playoffs too. He was cooked by the time he signed that extension if you ask me.

Other teams have had Robidas Island players, I think it should be manageable.
