All I was saying is we'll have 2 guys ( Stepan and brassard ) making 5+ a year and neither are first line centers. So we'll have 2 second line centers

Stepan is a top 30 C in the league. The main boards have him 10-20 amongst 1Cs. Stepan will be making 6 easily.

2 years ago Stepan was almost a point a game player.. I think he has the best chance to be a #1 center. And in a down year he had 57 points.. he's a legit #1 center, I expect 65-70 points next year from him.

That seems like a lot, but it is only 7% of the cap. Still, I was hoping for $4.5. He's not good enough to be a second liner on a good team.

Not a great deal or a terrible deal....market value...men.

Exactly, and tradable too down the road. I was hoping/thinking 4 yrs / 4.75 mil. but close enough.

Next year, there's gonna be a problem (Staal, Klein, raises, Glass, you name it) unless the cap goes to like 75 mil.

How so? Not trying to be an a-hole, but just wondering why.

Actually being in camp will be huge for him. He's always been a slow starter but last year's hold out really hurt him more than it would other players.

People should also remember that these 5 years should be the best of Brassard's career. He's in the prime of his career. I fully expect 50-55 from him on a regular basis.

The cap is going up...and so are salaries. 5m might be a few $ too high today, but 2 and 4 years from now likely not.

Let's agree to disagree I don't wanna get into a debate because we value guys different and it's our opinion. I feel brassards production could be replaced with a cheaper option .

Zucc should seriously get some very very nice christmas gifts from Pouliot and Brassard!!! He has made them both very rich men by driving that line the past season and with Brass in the playoffs prior to that.

Content with this.. a bit high AAV but at least we're keeping a solid playoff performer around

Like who? Very easy to throw words like that out there.
Besides ribeiro and Roy there wasn't much for a cheap center option for a short term deal but I would of liked to package brass for an upgrade at C so step can be the 2C. Personally I want Thornton , a deal around staal and brass would of got it done

Disagree. He's not good enough to be the 2c that relies on their centers for offense as the driver. With Nash, Kreider, MZA and MSL this teams offense is going to be driven by the wingers. 2 way play and creativity from the centers.

I like the deal.. It's very difficult o find a center of Brassards caliber as a UFA or via trade. Especially at his age.

Thornton? Sure, let's trade solid assets for more 35+ players.

Brassard is the type of player teams covet and are constantly looking for. 45-50 point center. Creative. Decent size. Good hockey IQ. PP player. In his prime. 5 million for 5 years? Look around. Look at what Orpik, Pouliot and many others just received who are not as good or much older. Brassard would make more than this pretty easily as a UFA. Look around the league. What are other players going to make or are making who are similar players.

This is an important distinction. Not every team is built to flow through the middle.

On the other hand, the teams that seem to win the Cup have been... at least until one that isn't built through the middle wins. No reason that can't happen.

I love how Brassard is a "playoff performer" because he had one hot series against Washington. His 12 points in 23 games last year come out to a 42 point season. He's a mid-40s point center. That's what he's been for the last four years. If he was such a playoff stud, then he would've finished higher than a three-way tie for sixth on the team in playoff scoring last year.

Contrary to popular belief, players don't post their best seasons in their late 20s to early 30s. The average player puts up his highest point total at age 25, maintains something close to that until they hit 30, and then drops way off. The aging curve looks like this:

You don't give 40-49 point players who do nothing else five year contracts. You just don't. The chances that Brassard suddenly starts potting 50+ points after never doing it before are very, very low. This is ****** deal. The fact that they locked him up long term rather than Zuccarello is ******. This has been an overall ****** offseason and proves that Sather has no idea what actually made them good last year. It's looking more and more likely that 2014 was Hank's only shot at a Cup. And that's the ********* thing.

Again, its what the market is... It's not overpaying, its not underpaying, its his market value.

If he's playing with Kreider or Nash and Zucc, then its realistic we can expect him to get 5-7 more points, which puts him at 50 points.
