I like the guy but that's too much IMO. I think Zucc's the more important player. IMO the Rangers are likely moving Staal sometime during the year.

5M? That's a little hefty but alright. 5M and a NTC, get the **** out of here. Gonna be a tough nut to bust next year with loads of guys turning FAs.

I tend to prefer centers who can play an all around two-way game, even moreso if they are inconsistent offensively, so I'm not too enamored with the term of this contract.

But I understand why the Rangers wanted to commit to Brass long term - our current depth at center is lousy and there is uncertainty in the future about whether or not or center prospects will pan out. Just got to hope that Brassard has another level offensively, and that Miller and Lindberg are ready to make substantive contributions in the next few years.

What would the alternative solution be? Take him to arbitration, lose him to free agency and sign Spezza for 8M per?

The problem with the cap is ... the fact we have way too much locked up in our D core.

i disagree. Boyle is only 2 years. The 'Cap will rise.
I pray Staal is re-upped.

Those 3 guys (18, 5, 27) plus Hank are the essential strength of this team.

Our biggest Cap probablem is Nash's contract. And i dont believe he will finish it (thru '17-'18) with NYR.
Besides the Cap will rise.

You can add Klein to that list. The way I read into it is that management likely believes both Skjei and McIlrath are not far away from becoming regulars in the lineup within the next year or so. Move Staal and Klein, replace them (eventually with McIlrath and Skjei), and you open up around $4.5 million in cap space.

Awesome. LNTC is key for me. Good tradeable asset at worst, long-term NYR at beat.

I personally think Brass has the best in front of him. He competes well and has a lot of hockey in him. He disappears some, too much at times. But that's what separate the best from the rest and we are not paying him even 50% of what the best is making. With time, he could take that step that separates a Patrick Sharpe from someone just on the other side of that line...

Slats probably has the option to lock up Zucc at around 4.5-5.5m after Christmas. Our RW depth will (hopefully?) keep Zucc from scoring too much.

The problem with Zucc is NTC vs NMC. Zucc doesn't want to sign at a discount with the risk of being traded two weeks later. Hopefully they can find some middle ground there...

If Zucc starts real good though, the fact that we didn't lock him up could mean that we could loose him or it could cost us 2+m per year for a handful of years...

And we all know that when Slats sits down with Zucc, the new cap predictions will be out. New Tv money. The CDN has already recovered. The NHL is doing real well. Closer to 80 than 70? Imaging if he is close to a PPG then a few month away from UFA. He was basically our best forward last year.... Could easily get him 7m per.

The Rangers front loaded the deal like they did with Girardi. CBA allows the 50% drop. $7M to $3.5M for Brassard. Lundqvist has $11M to $5.5M. Girardi has $7M to $4M.

This is awesome.

With the Cap going up, more teams become budget teams. Either we are perfectly content with these guys, or they will be easy to move and bring back value later on. It's perfectly possible that after 3 years Brass will enter his prime and be on a real cheap contract for 2 full years.

Zucc is easier to deal with. Brass seems very tough to negotiate with and would probably be very tough to lockup midsession after taking him to arbitration. Zucc seems like he's a lot easier to negotiate with and is more likely to sign an extension midsession.

Who cares? He's going to get extended before the season is over.

New cap predictions out though before they can negotiate. Short sample, what if he does real well, cap is predicted to be 76-77m? Could get 7m per on the market...

Must say I'm not a fan of the contract and direction we're going. 5 mil a year is 2C money and I see brass as a 3C on a championship team, does this mean Stepan is getting 7 a year? I really feel like this contract will bite us in the ass unless brassard becomes a consistent 60-70 point 2C. Would of liked him moved in a package for a legit first liner. He isn't worth more than 4 million IMO, Zuccarello will want over 5 million now

Ehhhh.... It's an okay deal I guess. I do think Brassard can be a better point producer in the right situation... but damn I don't know if I give him 5 mil for 5 years.

I like Brassard and all, but damn... he's gotta be a better overall player. If the cap goes up, definitely a more tolerable contract.

Wtf kind of 2C puts up 60-70 points? Also what C puts up 60-70 points and signs for 5 mill.

All I was saying is we'll have 2 guys ( Stepan and brassard ) making 5+ a year and neither are first line centers. So we'll have 2 second line centers

Somewhat higher salary than i would have liked, but im happy that Brass is signed for 5 years.
