#rangers Derick Brassard: 2014-15 7M, 15-16 6M, 16-17 5M, 17-18 3.5M, 18-19 3.5M

This structure makes this deal even harder to complain about as now pretty much no matter what he will always have value to a low budget team who barely operates the cap floor. This is very well done.

Front loaded deal. Easier to deal later on to teams looking to hit the cap floor. Rozsival to Phoenix was similar. 7 mil for final 2 years also IIRC.

So we have 1.3m to sign Moore then our summer is probably done.

At least it's a limited NTC as supposed to a full NMC.

Can someone explain to me how front loaded contracts affect the cap? I mean isn't the cap hit the same regardless of how the money's spread out?

People are *****ing about this? Really? I think this is an extremely good deal, given that they bought four UFA years of a legitimate #2 center (based both on his actual point totals and his importance to the Stanley Cup runners up) entering his prime. What did you people think Brassard was going to cost? I was expecting one year at his QO, 2 years at $4.4-4.7 or 3 years at 4.7-5.0. To get 5 years at $5.0MM is brilliant IMO.

I will also go on record saying I expect him to break 50 points this year.

I'm not fond of either the amount or length, but I can live with it. Like you, I expect a bump in his numbers, due to him riding Zucc's coattails as he continues his upward curve, and getting Richards' even strength TOI. As usual, this board is scattershot in how it approaches every personnel move this franchise makes.

No effect. Just means that in the future low budget teams can pay 3.5M/year for a 5M cap hit which will help them get to the floor while paying less.

The problem with the cap is not this contract or the one Stepan will get. It's the fact we have way too much locked up in our D core.

Yep. A team like the Rangers can afford to pay the player more up front though which works for both sides. Player gets his money sooner so he's happy and the Rangers are satisfied too because it makes the contract easier to trade later on.

I'm fine with this, largely because over the past two seasons he is our top playoff scorer. In NY thus far .49 regular season to .69 in the playoffs. You could do worse.

This is mainly just for this year and next though. McDonagh's contract is a steal. Girardi's is basically market value. Staal seems likely to be gone during/after this season. Boyle's hit will be off the books after next year. Klein's got 4 years at a pretty cheap value. If we get rid of Staal next year and replace him with a McIlrath/Sjkei/Allen thats 3M in savings right there. More could be saved by trading Klein as well but that mainly depends on how our prospects come along.

The idea is that you can trade him to a team trying to reach the cap floor. So let's say he's being paid 3.5 but his cap hit is 5, a team like Arizona might want him. They only have to pay 3.5 but it counts as 5. The Rangers basically did that with the Rozy-Wolski trade.

The Rangers front loaded the deal like they did with Girardi. CBA allows the 50% drop. $7M to $3.5M for Brassard. Lundqvist has $11M to $5.5M. Girardi has $7M to $4M.

Was thinking he'd sign 3 years $4.75 after seeing the numbers the Rangers and he submitted for the arbitration hearing. 5 years $5 million is fair.

If J. Moore resigns at his QO the Rangers will have about $1-1.5 million in cap space depending on who they keep in the 4th line and reserve players.

I think Zucc gets a similar deal after January 1st. Stepan was getting $5.5-6 million next off season without Brassards contract.

Complains that the team is being torn apart and should be kept together

Says that we should have signed a stopgap instead of Brassard

There's a lot of people that both those statements apply to...

Yeah, that's cool. I don't think a majority of the players you listed in your little chart are actually worth what they're paid.

And, again, that's if you're going strictly off points, disregarding the fact that Brassard is a mediocre player at even strength.

Not to be a dick but what YOU think players are worth and what the market for them happens to be are two different things. You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but don't act like Brassard is a garbage player who we should be paying 2 million a year. C'mon.

Think they should have just given him the 1 year deal or Cap Hit of 4.5M for 5Yrs...Too much when you factor in signing others in future. I hope his numbers step up...

I'm not sold on a guy who's career high is 47 points and let's be realistic he faced 3rd lines/pairs last season. Now he's going to be going up against tougher competition. Oh but he's a playoff performer. By that logic Nash should be traded.
