That is incorrect. The only way an 18 or 19 year old player burns a year of the ELC is if he plays more than 9 games in the NHL during the season. Please see the 2 examples below from last season - Lias Andersson & Filip Chytil (Rangers).

Lias Andersson - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps
Filip Chytil - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

If he does start out in Ottawa, he will be subject to the same games played thresholds as other junior-aged players are. He could play nine games without burning the first year of his entry-level deal while he wouldn’t accrue a season towards unrestricted free agency until he hits the 40-game mark.

Since London holds his rights I believe that he would burn a year if he goes to the AHL

I could be wrong though

Pretty happy with the news. He'll get to play at the rookie tournament and experience the NHL camp/preseason. I do expect him to end up in London.

I'd say he either makes the Sens or comes to London
Belleville is just as likely. He could get comfortable playing with his future team mates and learn from the new coach who is hopefully very competent.

The last sentence of your post is accurate.

Regardless, it's good to get Tkachuk under contract.

Only NHL games matter for an 18-19 yr old.

For example, look at William Nylander's 2014/15 season. Same type of thing.

Doubtful that he's going to play against a bunch of teenager in London after playing against men last year. It really doesn't seem likely, and frankly feels counter intuitive to player development.

He also doesn't have to out perform expectations or steal anything. He needs to meet coaching expectations in order to earn a spot out of camp. He also doesn't have to start his career by immediately being a key contributor, no rookie of any age should be expected to do that, rather it would be a bonus.

I feel like you're setting unrealistic expectations in case he/they make choices that don't align with your opinions.

He was playing with 17-24YR olds last year. If he goes to the CHL he'd be playing with 16-20YR olds. Not exactly going from playing against "men" to "boys".

Tkachuk is a lanky 19YR old that had 8G and 31P in 40GP in college last year. He clearly has more to learn at the lower levels. London would be a great place for him to develop his offensive game.

If he shows that he's ready now to contribute at the NHL level, keeping him with the big club is fine. What I am worried about is another Lazar-type situation where he doesn't show anything in training camp/pre-season that indicates he's ready to be a key contributor, but is kept up nonetheless for inexplicable reasons. That won't be good for his development, and we absolutely cannot afford to have the development of our 4th OVR pick stagnate because we rushed him to the league before he was ready.

Sometimes a push notification can change a sleep for the better.

My hope for Brady is he suits up for the first four home games and then goes straight to Belleville.

Gives a five game cushion should the team perform the way they could and we challenge for a playoff spot. He could be a real spark if we need it down the stretch.

For me this could end up being better for his development.

He’s going to get more games in, and the team can keep a close eye on him.

However, I really hope they don’t expect him to crack the roster outside of 5 games to start the season. having him play in London or Belleville are both good options.

The silence from the "Tkachuk doesn't want to come to Ottawa because it's a dumpster fire" crowd is going to be deafening over the next few days. Maybe, just maybe, the self-flagellation and self-hatred in which we have all engaged over the last few months might have been a touch overblown, and maybe this organization is perceived better outside of our fanbase by respected hockey people than it is within. Just a thought...

Broad brush you are wielding there.

The team is a dumpster fire and this signing has zero impact on that fact.

totally agree. people underestimate how important the mental aspect is in sports. confidence is something that needs to be cultivated in players, and its something best done at the lower levels.

Agreed.

The team, especially at coaching and ice level was never as bad as presented here. The organization has had some blows this year for sure, and lets not sugar coat the blunders that EM has made, but management, coaching, and the players are still well respected around the league, and while we finished low this year, we finished high the year before. Teams are allowed to have bad years without being joke organizations.

We're definitely running under financial constraints, and some future money moves seem to be affecting our star signings, but the team isn't a dumpster fire. We have too many good people in the organization (can use more for sure!).

The loudest voices on this particular site tend to focus on real and perceived negatives, and flog them mercilessly until folks stop bothering to debate, and are left creating a sense of impending doom. But away from these boards things don't look nearly so dire, in fact it's easy to see positives floating around the team, especially when it comes to our younger players.

I'm looking forward to rookie camp and the big camp, lots of wicked prospects to check out. I'm also excited to see if anything pans out along ownership lines. Lebreton looks to be on track as well which should be a huge boost, even if it's just until the novelty wears off.

Im coo with this. Now the garbage he won't sign here will go away.

Rookie tournament, exhibition games and maybe even a regular season stint would be nice.

Hopefully its London or the AHL though. Stay away from the big club

Not really, confidence is built when a player is put in challenging situations where they have an opportunity to succeed. The problem with many fans here is that they want BT to play in London because they want him to score a lot and turn into Zadina, who they really wanted us to pick.

The reality is that BT is a physical player who thrives in aggressive play. He needs to hone his playmaking and scoring while continuing to play against older and more aggressive players for more games. the OHL isn't going to teach him how to score more in the NHL, just like his one year in college doesn't represent his scoring abilities the NHL. But there is actually a big difference between junior players and college aged players, just like there will be an even greater difference between college guys and AHL/NHL guys. the AHL will likely be even rougher physically for him on a regular basis, and it's this kind of play that he needs to get use to and thrive in. Not dangling in junior and trying to inflate his post draft numbers. The draft is done, it's time to focus on developing BT into the best player HE can be.

Let the kid play his game, and accept, and be excited, that he's going to become a different player than what some folks wanted us to draft.

Just my 2 cents... and worth just about as much ;)

That'd be awesome.

London is set to be a contender for the Memorial Cup if Tkachuk comes over:

Tkachuk - Foudy - Evangelista
Formenton - Dunkley - Popov
Stranges - Guskov - Panwar
McMichael - Moskal - Tymkin

Regula - Bouchard
Golden - Boqvist
Perrott - Keane

Kooy

I don't follow them too closely so I'm sure the lines will be way off, but that's stacked roster that could be put over the top with a couple deadline acquisitions.
