I'm now convinced Shanahan was behind the contracts for Matthews and Marner.

Dubas never said the core 4 were untouchable. His main beef was he wanted more power, and not having to continue run everything through Shanahan. If he thought it was necessary to trade Matthews, Marner or Nylander he wanted to be able to do that with no interference from anyone.

It was that refusal, not just money IMO that got him turfed.

Why do I think that?

Shanahan reportedly contacted Matthews, Marner and Nylander and told them they would not be traded. Treliving has come out and said we need to do something with our defense.

I believe Dubas had every intention to try to get Matthews to at least agree to sign an extension on July 1, failing that he would have explored trading him.

So here we are. Same place as the Islanders were a few years.
I defended Tavares then and I will defend Matthews as well if he leaves.

We have him for one more year. We have an ability to get some kind of agreement from him on an extension for July 1. If we can't and he walks next year, it's all on Leafs management,

What it means in plain English: This seems to be one of the things Treliving really liked about his Flames teams, that he’ll no doubt try to replicate here. The Leafs have forechecked and defended hard as a group, but there’s no doubt the additions of guys like Noel Acciari, Sam Lafferty, and Jake McCabe helped the team gain some needed pushback at the fringes. They were 25th in majors last season with 14 of them. I’d bet that’s a higher number next season.

The trouble is, if you aren’t going to change the core, we have the right coach. Or at least the substitute teacher for a team run by a few.
No Babs, Trotz, Cassidy, etc. is going to get them to play heavy, mean, aggressive, nasty, consistent hard forecheck, board/puck battle, etc.

The player has to sign an offer sheet for that to work. If let's say Columbus offersheeted him at 9M, I highly doubt he would've signed it, considering how unreasonable his camp seemed to be through his negotiations.

As much as our game changes and speed and skill are paramount in our game, at this time of year, I feel the two most important areas — and it has been for a long time — are the front of both nets. At the end of the day, you are trying to get to mine. How am I going to keep you from it? I am trying to get to yours. How can you keep me from it?

Those are things that we have to find. We have to look for ways we can augment our team. Sometimes, that is not necessarily airlifting people in. It is getting people to adjust how they play. It is getting people to make sure we are getting inside. It is making sure that our puck battles are an area that is of the highest priority.

How do we check? We don’t defend. We check. To me, there is a difference. You are on your toes. You are aggressive.

Haha or he did and is sending a message to a couple players? I love this quote though. Marner and Nylander certainly won't like hearing it. We don't defend we check? Marner exclusively defends. Which I could point out at least a couple goals in the playoffs that if he had checked the goal against may not have happened.

Watch the playoffs and you see how important using your body is. It's not just about huge hits, its about using your body to protect the puck or using your body to knock a player unsteady to allow you take the puck...Oreilly doesn't throw big hits but he was always using his body to win position. He was excellent in the series.

Nylander and Marner don't use their bodies whatsoever. They don't go to the fronts of their net or their opponents, they don't engage in a battle for loose pucks, they don't hit, and try to not get hit. They don't engage in after whistle battles.

Good luck changing them though.. I don't think it's possible with these two.
