If mathews walks next year and we have offered him a fair contract .I'm now convinced Shanahan was behind the contracts for Matthews and Marner.
Dubas never said the core 4 were untouchable. His main beef was he wanted more power, and not having to continue run everything through Shanahan. If he thought it was necessary to trade Matthews, Marner or Nylander he wanted to be able to do that with no interference from anyone.
It was that refusal, not just money IMO that got him turfed.
Why do I think that?
Shanahan reportedly contacted Matthews, Marner and Nylander and told them they would not be traded. Treliving has come out and said we need to do something with our defense.
I believe Dubas had every intention to try to get Matthews to at least agree to sign an extension on July 1, failing that he would have explored trading him.
So here we are. Same place as the Islanders were a few years.
I defended Tavares then and I will defend Matthews as well if he leaves.
We have him for one more year. We have an ability to get some kind of agreement from him on an extension for July 1. If we can't and he walks next year, it's all on Leafs management,
What has he done to make you say that? The core four are running the show .
We are f***ed they have MLSE wrapped around the finger.
New GM same bullshit
Keefe the core 4 love you sign him to an extension yippy .
If Keefe was going to be finished it would have happened by now. What has he done to make you say that?we
Real Treliving quote: "In the playoffs, you have to be able to play in a number of different ways and be able to engage — not just accept — and be proactive in putting your game against an opponent. You have to be able to handle different styles of play. Do we look at our defence, and are there ways we can augment that?"Where will Brad Treliving take the Maple Leafs? Decoding front office lingo
Brad Treliving has a tall task in front of him with the Maple Leafs and Justin Bourne tries to figure out where the new GM's head is at by dissecting what he's said so far.www.sportsnet.ca
Topic: Physical play
Real Treliving quote: "With our teams in Calgary, we felt that we could not just respond but initiate physical challenge."
What it means in plain English: This seems to be one of the things Treliving really liked about his Flames teams, that he’ll no doubt try to replicate here. The Leafs have forechecked and defended hard as a group, but there’s no doubt the additions of guys like Noel Acciari, Sam Lafferty, and Jake McCabe helped the team gain some needed pushback at the fringes. They were 25th in majors last season with 14 of them. I’d bet that’s a higher number next season.
Topic: Playoffs
Real Treliving quote: "Sometimes you need certain things that get you to the playoffs and get you through the regular season, and then there might be things you need to get through the playoffs."
What it means in plain English: We’re talking about the same thing here, but it is reinforcing the idea they want some grit element. That said, the first part implies he’s aware that the Leafs have been great in the regular season and you can’t look past that, or you’ll end up like his Flames team of this past season, who didn’t even get the chance to be more “gritty” in the playoffs.
Topic: Style of play
Real Treliving quote: "How do we check? We don’t defend. We check. To me, there is a difference. You are on your toes. You are aggressive."
What it means in plain English: Last one on this topic. He wants to go at teams more. What remains to be seen is the question I’ve asked for years: does getting meaner outside the core matter if the guys who play 25 minutes a night in the playoffs don’t have that element?
Topic: Defence
Real Treliving quote: "In the playoffs, you have to be able to play in a number of different ways and be able to engage — not just accept — and be proactive in putting your game against an opponent. You have to be able to handle different styles of play. Do we look at our defence, and are there ways we can augment that?"
What it means in plain English: It’s the last line I’m interested in here, about “augmenting” the defence. The Leafs' outlook at D, it ain’t great. If Mark Giordano is considering retiring, and Justin Holl isn’t coming back – both of which are just conjecture at this point – then things start to look awfully thin awfully fast on the back end. None of Morgan Rielly or TJ Brodie or Timothy Liljegren (or Conor Timmins) are exactly net-front defenders, so I’d expect any major adds to include help for the back-end that isn’t the skate-and-breakout variety, in the interest of “augmentation.”
Let us try it again it is our only chance or else it is over for a long long timeIf Keefe was going to be finished it would have happened by now.
Rumors are that there is an extention coming as well.
The core will be back .
If that is the case is the bus being driven by MLSE and Shanahan.
Prove me wrong or it is the same old shit.
Both Vegas and Florida fired their coaches last year and are in the SCF. The Leafs want to give Keefe a 5th kick at the can with the same core 4.If Keefe was going to be finished it would have happened by now.

All conjecture at this point. Nobody knows what Brad is going to do. Lets at least wait til he does something before we criticize him for it.If Keefe was going to be finished it would have happened by now.

Yep... Dubas was actually afraid that another team was gonna offer Marner more than what he did? What team was gonna give Marner, a 6 year deal, 10.893 million, much of it in bonuses, 4 first round picks compensation, a NMC and probably also negotiated the assistant captaincy too. Not just that, Marner was near family and raking in endorsement money. And the NMC he got absolutely destroyed
It's a shame that we didn't fire Keefe last yr .really wanted Cassidy. Both Vegas and Florida fired their coaches last year and are in the SCF. The Leafs want to give Keefe a 5th kick at the can with the same core 4.
I will wait til the first game of the season before deciding if the world is ending. Lots can happen between now and then. Both Vegas and Florida fired their coaches last year and are in the SCF. The Leafs want to give Keefe a 5th kick at the can with the same core 4.
The trouble is, if you aren’t going to change the core, we have the right coach. Or at least the substitute teacher for a team run by a few. Both Vegas and Florida fired their coaches last year and are in the SCF. The Leafs want to give Keefe a 5th kick at the can with the same core 4.
It was the Leafs or nothing. He was not signing any OS. We should have been so lucky if he did. Easy match of better contract or take the 4 Columbus 1sts.Yep... Dubas was actually afraid that another team was gonna offer Marner more than what he did? What team was gonna give Marner, a 6 year deal, 10.893 million, much of it in bonuses, 4 first round picks compensation from a different team, NMC and he probably also negotiated the Assistance captaincy too. Lol Dubas might as just didn't negotiate and let a team offer sheet him and then just signed it. It would have been much better than the deal he negotiated.
You can say the same thing about Matthew'sHunter was really obsessed with one specific teenager there huh. My favourite part was him talking about how amazing Marner’s family is and that it’s one of the main draws to him. Thanks for Paul Marner, Hunts! Real good eye for character you had there.
Agreed 100%. Brad over Dubas is already a step in the right direction.I will wait til the first game of the season before deciding if the world is ending. Lots can happen between now and then.
However, if by then we are just running back all 4 and Keefe, even if we upgrade somehow our goalie and D, it will be very disappointing for sure and I will jump on the 'we are so screwed' bandwagon. Im close now but Im willing to give Brad a chance. Dont let me down Brad.
Nope but Cassidy would have a better system and will not be outcoached badly. The trouble is, if you aren’t going to change the core, we have the right coach. Or at least the substitute teacher for a team run by a few.
No Babs, Trotz, Cassidy, etc. is going to get them to play heavy, mean, aggressive, nasty, consistent hard forecheck, board/puck battle, etc.
HunterWhat?
We had an entire thread here where people were bending over backwards to defned dubas and calling shanny "out of touch" (not a dig at OP in that thread as I think he had the right motivation in terms of cap allocation).
Proof: Shanahan's biggest gaffe shows he's out of touch: revisiting the "Discounts" quote
Will people stop deflecting the shit dubas has put this franchise through ffs.
The player has to sign an offer sheet for that to work. If let's say Columbus offersheeted him at 9M, I highly doubt he would've signed it, considering how unreasonable his camp seemed to be through his negotiations.Yep... Lol Dubas might as well notnjave negotiated at all and just let a team offersheet him and then just match. It would have been much better than the deal he negotiated.
Treliving: As I said earlier, there are different styles in the playoffs. Sometimes you need certain things that get you to the playoffs and get you through the regular season, and then there might be things you need to get through the playoffs.
Those two players there I know really well. We drafted Sam fourth overall and Matthew sixth overall. With our teams in Calgary, we felt that we could not just respond but initiate physical challenge. People sometimes take that and say, “Oh we are going back…”
To me, playing a heavier game and competing heavier is puck battles. It is winning space at the front of the net. As much as our game changes and speed and skill are paramount in our game, at this time of year, I feel the two most important areas — and it has been for a long time — are the front of both nets. At the end of the day, you are trying to get to mine. How am I going to keep you from it? I am trying to get to yours. How can you keep me from it?
Those are things that we have to find. We have to look for ways we can augment our team. Sometimes, that is not necessarily airlifting people in. It is getting people to adjust how they play. It is getting people to make sure we are getting inside. It is making sure that our puck battles are an area that is of the highest priority.
How do we check? We don’t defend. We check. To me, there is a difference. You are on your toes. You are aggressive.
We know what it is like in the regular season. A guy may finish his check every… You are playing 82 games, you are in back-to-backs, it’s three in four. There are no fly-bys in the playoffs. There is no letup. We have to make sure we have a roster that can handle whatever the game may present.
Clearly he's never watched this team, we are a fly by bunch of soft in the corners wussies. I mean "fly by" is Willies middle name.
