Yeah Shanny really took the high road as he gave a play by play recounting of the Dubas negotiations in his earlier press conference...a stunt most neutrals viewed as extremely bizarre and not at all "classy and professional"
You're supposed to take a dude you literally handed a career to putting a gun to your head sitting down?

Yeah no.

Remember when everyone was comparing Eichel and Matthews to see who was best.
once again Matthews is golfing and Eichel is contesting for the cup……..and we are seriously considering making him the highest paid player in the league……..give me a break

I will take on thanks
you mean like how Eichel has spent every year golfing by mid April until this year 8 years into his career?

It is up to the Leafs whether or not they want to pay him. It's not just the Leafs who get screwed over. The Flames were screwed with Johnny and Tkachuk. NYI lost JT, who actually took less by all accounts to come to Toronto. St. Louis took a stand didn't pay Petro what he wanted/bonus structure to my knowledge etc, and he left.

TB let Stamkos walk right to free agency and said we have $8.5mil for you if you want to come back. Again by all accounts he was offered more elsewhere, but ended up going back. Do you want to play chicken with Matthews like TB did with Stammer? We can, but we have to be willing to let him walk.

Mack decided $12.6 to be the highest paid was enough for him. Mcdavid was offered $14.5mil and gave back $2mil per year because he wanted to.

If Matthews wants the max amount of money and the Leafs don't want to pay him, he will go elsewhere like countless other players have. If he values being a Maple Leaf, maybe he will stay for less, but I still can't see him not being paid the most in the league.
1. The McD at 14.5mil is never confirmed.
2. AM can ask for any amount, it doesn’t mean the Leafs and any other teams are willing to pay.

He is not even close to being the best in the league and the player who was close at being the best in the league signed for 12.75mil last summer where the cap was 82.5mil. Another scorer who is as good as him signed for 11.25mil a few months ago.
What makes AM think that he deserves to be the highest paid player in the league? A Hart trophy while playing with the 7th highest paid player in the league and played 7 playoffs game, or his two Rocket Trophies. Stamkos got 8.5mil and he had more success both team and personal than AM at a time where Toews, Kane and Kopitar all signed deals over 10mil.

With everything staying the same, you really have to wonder how much of what is the Leafs today is Dubas vs. Shanahan.

I’m not sure if it’s been raised but the other part of Treliving’s track record in Calgary is that it’s not exactly an a-list destination.
They can’t attract the best talent as UFA’s or retain their best talent. This will be different in Toronto.

Criticisms of some of the contracts he handed out I think were influenced by the above.

Just like it may be more difficult for Kyle to stack the team with vets on one way deals in the minors and have extra staff and eat money on trading away mistakes in Pitt.

I’m willing to give Brad a chance.

Eichel finally got a crack at the playoffs and has been playing like a guy that grew up in hockey culture.
Eichel and Reinhart were both on the same team and are now in the finals.
They didn’t get anywhere together. Sum of the parts.

I shouldn't be helping on this but if you really want to undermine the new GM I suggest waiting until he actually does something then criticizing him for those actions.
People can do that. They can also critize his glasses, age, background, the fact that he has used spreadsheets before and that he replaced a GM that they liked.

Catering to the kids again. They wont fire Keefe because they need to extend Matthews. If they fire him, Matthews gonna say well who are u hiring now?

Such a mess.

Going to run the same shyt back

Like it or not political bullshit is part of any working environment, i live it every day, the higher you get the more snakes and dirtbags there are and I'm surrounded by a sea of snakes. Smile to your face, joke and be pleasant to you to your face and talk shit and scheme about you behind your back. It happens , it is what it is.

Pretty simple lock up Matty &, Willie the first bad 5 game shitty stretch you fire Keefe. you know based on past years we are going to come out of the gates crappy then streak in Nov. So before we start to streak in Nov you fire his ass.

It's probably a necessary evil to lock up Matthews at that kind of AAV but it does suck a bit to prematurely allocate hypothetical cap to him. That JT contract cannot end soon enough.

Nate MacKinnon is coming off a Cup and 42 goals 111 point (5th overall) his new deal kicks in 8 years at $12.6 mil so Matthews wants a 3-5 year deal $13-14 mil. So pay the man the Cap is going up to 92 mil. ..

Mikko Rantanen his teammate also has a Cup and coming off a 55 goal 105 point season (8th OA) makes $9.5 mil AAV, Marner already makes $10.9 ml (+$1.4 mil more) coming off his best 30 goal 99 point season, So where does Marner next contract end up at MacKinnon at 12.5? Pay him what he wants when comparables would be far less?.

Then Willy says "I had a career year of 40 goals and 87 points" I'm going to need the Mikko Rantanen deal of $9.5 mil. So pay him also to keep the gang together?

So the Cap rising to $92 mil makes each Leafs contract less impactful but compared to other Cup Competitive teams like the Avs for example who outscore the Leafs players and with each overpaid contract that Cup Competitiveness gap increases for Leafs opposition as the spend themselves back into Cap Hell again for a 2nd time round.

New GM so its going to be interesting where this all ends up, and how he handles this Leafs situation to try and real in Leafs contracts.

Where does it all end and a Leafs GM says enough is enough already and pay industry rates and not make league exceptions simply because they're Leafs?

it doesn't have to be, jettison any player that thinks HE's in control of the team's direction. For the love of God stop pandering to these entitled divas, it's no wonder this team can't win..............

It won't be up to the GM. Leafs management will want them signed at whatever they want. And around and around we go. Cash is king in Toronto. I am now convinced we are never going to see a Leafs SC win in our lifetime.
