Whoever is hired has a lot of work to do just to maintain a playoff team while waiting for the albatross contacts to expire.

I think of the Calgary Flames before their meltdown to Edmonton last year as a St. Louis Blues, Vegas Golden Knights, Winnipeg Jets style of Western Conference contender that can be up and down every year but has that similar solid back end, big body, straight line speed. If he can come in and build up a credible blueline and some hard to play against bottom 6 group I think that will complement the Big 4.

We just need the GM equivalent of a guy who can make a solid play under pressure instead of dangling at the blueline to prove how talented they are. Just do good work.

Key would be Matthews/Nylander AAV -> i.e. what would it be? and... can what may be the expected aav for marner? if 3 of them together is too much I'd dump one of Marner or Nylander in a trade.

When Tavares is off the books; we can use the assets from the marner/nylander trade to upgrade the situation.

like you said we should try to build a solid back-end and have to resolve the goalie situation (freakin' murray contract). That stupid Tavares contract cannot come off the books soon enough

Trade matthews ASAP

2027-2028 is our time to contend

This is the puppet GM we needed

Burn the dubas/shanny/lou era away

What if Matthews camp does 13m x 5 for him? Marner 50% retained for 2 years is your big return play.

I think there's something to be said for the fact that Treliving is neither an inexperienced "rising star" nor a grey beard treading on past glory. He was a once touted AGM who has gone through the growing pains of doing the job at the NHL level, so hopefully he's learned a trick or two and is able to build something special here.

Your optimism is not welcome here

Didnt know he had a NMC. Good know. You are right sometimes the teams hands are tied and they play the cards they are dealt with.
Yeah players these days seem to have so much power when it comes to this stuff. I just find it funny how we're apparently gonna be a worse team now with the same core that has let us down every year under Dubas and Keefe.

Mediocre as hell with us. Maybe he’ll do more if ownership meddles less, but Calgary couldn’t even achieve the regular season success that Toronto had and it was left with a bleak future and bad cap situation. Constantly hemorrhaged assets for a team that made the playoffs every second yr and as a final goodbye traded monahan to sign Kadri for a 7x7. Never learned his lesson in FA.

Wish you guys the best. Very divisive among flames fans, but I think this is a downgrade. Keep him away from the phone on July 1st and things might be fine. After all, a change of scenery can sometimes do wonders.

Laughable that everyone is freaking out. My god Dubasites are the absolute worst. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say Tre will do a good job here. I believe he’ll inject a new and way better philosophy than that absolute donkey Dubis ever could. Dubis was an absolute amateur in every single way and it showed through the consistent insane belief that cups are won with a heavy concentration of speed, soft skill finesse players, when really all of us can see that a blend of everything is the most ideal to winning the cup. Prepare for our team to get a lot meaner on the ice. And that is a good thing. The Dubasites’ tears taste so good. Welcome to Toronto, Tre!
Not everyone is freaking out. Dubasite is a completely fictional pejorative. Treleving is fine by me. What is laughable is that you are freaking out.

How do we contend with 5.5M of dead cap + whatever the big piece marner brings costs?

Its close to impossible

We would be at like 13.5-14M on marner+replacment player and Matthews is up 1.5M + Nylander up another 2-2.5M

The team wont improve much this way

Underwhelming but let’s see what he does here.

Off-season for the Leafs begins now.
